Re: [videoblogging] ten videoblogs for national (womens') magazine, quick!

2006-04-25 Thread Lisa Williams

They have no idea! I think they first heard the word videoblog last
week.
So let's show them some great stuff, some stuff by women, some stuff
that will get their mental gears turning. They're super smart and open
to new things but just not familiar at all with the vlogosphere.
I'm sure vlogs by women about womens' issues would be really
compelling to them.

 quick!

 Help!

I'm visiting a well-known womens' magazine in NYC on Thursday to talk
about blogging. Last minute email from hosts says, Show us some
 videoblogs!

So, if you were going to see the editors of a magazine you've probably
seen on the supermarket store racks, what would you show them?

I'll love you guys forever for helping me out on this one!

Re: [videoblogging] Technorati OPML ??

2006-04-06 Thread Lisa Williams
You said it! How crummy is it that iTunes inhaled the (OPML) iPodder
directory, but won't share what they've got, too? It's a problem at the
individual user level -- not being able to easily export subscriptions
-- and at the community level -- walled garden directory.

Re: [videoblogging] Technorati OPML ??

2006-04-05 Thread Lisa Williams
Now, this tickled something in my brain, because I remember writing
about it back when Technorati started doing reading lists. It's a pet
peeve of mine when apps want you to input or import data but won't allow
you to export data. I call such apps roach motels -- Your Data Gets
In, But It Doesn't Get Out.

Here's what I wrote back then, and below that is a response I got from
Niall Kennedy, who wrote to me about it:

February 22: http://blogs.opml.org/thisislisa/2006/02/22#When:4:04:51PM

David Sifry of Technorati
http://www.sifry.com/alerts/archives/000423.html: I've been very
intrigued by the possibilities around Reading Lists, and so we wanted to
support them as quickly as possible in the most intuitive place as
possible. /Exactly how does Technorati use OPML in its implementation of
Reading Lists? Does it import OPML but export something else? Import and
export? Who's played with it?
/

And here's the response I got from Niall Kennedy of Technorati:

Hi Lisa,
Technorati outputs OPML for its Blog Finder product across every blog
finder page we serve. This feature allows people to easily populate an
RSS aggregator with a list of feeds in a given topic.

http://feeds.technorati.com/blogs/gardening?format=opml

You may also download a listing of the most popular Blog Finder tags
in OPML format.

Michael Sullivan wrote:
well, they support opml for the import or 'reading lists' but they
dont seem to allow export. so as far as the favorites feature, they
should at least offer opml export there.
but i want more, i want to export a tag, even if i am only allowed to
export the latest 50 or whatever from the tag. i'd like to see the
option and since technorati is built around links, they could be more
open by providing more ways to take links out without voodoo.

Can it be that they do not support OPML? This is insane!

Which part is insane? The fact that Technorati might not support a
standard like OPML? (hurm... I use the term standard quite
 loosely.)

Do they have an xoxo list instead?

Re: [videoblogging] Technorati OPML ??

2006-04-04 Thread Lisa Williams
I'm not sure the OPML file would be so large.

The OPML file would have a single line of text for each blog containing
the RSS URL of the videoblog, along with some elements to make the
OPML work.
Let's imagine that each line of text was 1K (probably an overstatement,
but makes the math easy). Then the OPML for 9,000 videoblogs would be 9MB.

The problem wouldn't be the OPML file--but what happened when you tried
to load all those videoblogs in your aggregator. Probably explosions,
smoke, flame, toxic fumes ;)

This brings up a good question, how to make lightweight directories of
videoblogs. OPML would be a good use of that, because it's used to make
outlines (like a tree structure). Each person could edit their branch
of the tree. But we'd need smart aggregators to be able to move from
branch to branch without downloading unless we really wanted to.
(Forgive me if the videoblog aggregators already do that. I just got
started again with FireAnt, which I like a lot. I had it on my old
computer, but then that computer died an ugly death, and it's taken me
awhile to get a new computer and get it all set up again).

If they did support OPML (to export the blogs being syndicated for a
tag or whatever), the file would probably be HUGE (in most cases).

Think about it. Technorati (and the other blog search engines) are
indexes millions and millions of blogs, Potentially you could have
enormously gigantic OPML files. (Maybe something like OMPL files that
are 9000 GB in size.) And because of this, they probably thought that
there is no point. (Even in the cases where there are very few blogs
 show up for the tag/search.)

 See ya

[videoblogging] What camera should I ask Santa for?

2005-12-12 Thread Lisa Williams
So, what camera should I ask Santa for?

I've got a pocket digital camera that I like, but it limits video clips
to three minutes. I'd like to get a small digital camcorder, nothing
too pricey. Thoughts?
