For those who don't know, there's a page on the Save the Internet site with banners you can put on your sites (http://www.savetheinternet.com/=swag). There's even a YouTube video explaining the Net Neutrality issue. All the code is there to just drop into your posts, etc. I posted the video and banners to my site (http://newmediacollective.org) a couple of days ago. I just hope it helps. On my site, The New Media Collective, I try to post as many media-related events as I can. I came across this event and posted it on the site last week (http://www.newmediacollective.org/2006/04/ meet_rocketboom_crew_in_new_yo.html). I've most recently created a calender of events so folks can have a heads up about events in the blogosphere. I definitely would have been there, but wasn't feeling too well today. Hi Vincent, Since I'm in NYC I won't be able to help you with your interview, but I would like to let you know about my site, The New Media Collective, which serves as an information resource and social network for people of color in the blogosphere. Please check it out (http://newmediacollective.org) and add yourself to our Directory. I'll definitely be talking about you guys and what you're doing. Re: [videoblogging] Productive Member of the Group
Hi Jason, Many vloggers have been going at it over a year, some, 2 years or more! I would agree with some of the others that you've got to crawl before you walk. Folks on here have worked long and hard to learn the art and craft of videoblogging and get pretty bent on someone coming in with a just add water and stir attitude. And I guess you've figured out that words like spam really piss people off. (You could probably still use some ointment for the flogging you got earlier. -- Ouch!) My vlog isn't just some rant about my life (it's not that interesting), it is a 10-minute entertainment show(not that interesting), designed to be commercial free, watch it if you want to, Internet TV. The loose model for it is rocketboom, or mobuzztv. My suggestion, if you want your vlog to have any kind of success, is 1) to shorten it by half, and 2) MAKE IT INTERESTING! Nobody wants to invest/contribute to something unpalatable, especially when there's so much better content out there. Just common sense IMHO. Well, here's to starting over. I hope that was constructive enough for you. Peace Love, Melanie NYC Is On The Air! Catch the show @ www.nyc-tv.com

Some things that are important to me: 1) Give credit. A permalink to my blog would do. I'd prefer to have the source listed in the item title and description to make it really obvious. 2) Enclosure must sit on my server. Don't copy it onto your server and republish because I like to know how many people are watching my vid. 3) The emphasis about the feed should not be watch this feed! but rather watch these other feeds that I watch. Overall I agree with Josh Leo that ReVlogs are great. Check out his About Josh's Picks blurb here: http://www.joshleo.com/picks/?page_id=2 I'd love to start revlogging. But where's the line in terms of courtesy to the video makers? What's proper etiquette? Do you need to email the person first before you link to their video on your vlog? What about ads? [videoblogging] Re: Other People's Videos
Thanks for the input guys! To Steve, Keep in mind that some creators don't want you to host their video on your site because they are counting on traffic to their site to get viewer counts and ad views, while others pay for bandwidth and more views cost them money. I'm actually aware of this and this is where the confusion lies. I've always believed in giving credit where it's due no matter what type of media it is, and don't want to rob anyone of their traffic (if anything, I'd like to help generate more traffic for them). At the same time, I don't want to increase anyone's bandwidth costs for linking to their videos. I'd be interested in what Geek Entertainment TV thinks of the method you used to post one of their interviews. http://www.newmediacollective.org/2006/03/ sxsw2006_blogging_while_black.html Looks like you have a direct link to their movie with a link back to their site for credit. In this case, and in the SXSW video, I linked back to their sites. Although I use pop-ups to showcase videos on my other site (http://nyc-tv.com), on The New Media Collective I've elected to use embedded video because 1) it integrates better with the design, and 2) the playing in place feature is just cool. Since GETV does use a CC license, and host their videos on blip.tv, there shouldn't be a problem since I did give them credit and linked back to the original post. I would be interested in their input though. As far as SXSW goes, that's another issue. ;-) With The New Media Collective I consider myself to be a journalist disseminating information. The way I see it, I'm only helping the cause. As they say, as long as the names are spelled right, there's no such thing as bad publicity. :-) When I use clips of others videos for Vlog Soup, I let the creator know as a courtesy. You're absolutely right to do this. Sometimes, in my haste and anxiety to get the post up, I'll skip this part of things. I'll have to slow down long enough to do this, even if it's after the fact. To Nathan, I often contact the person and work out a deal. Most of the time, I host the video. Not a bad idea, but like I said, there often isn't enough time to wait if it's a hot topic. As far as hosting the vids myself, I only want to do it if it's something I shot or was specifically contributed to the site by one of my editors. I really don't want to rob anyone of their traffic numbers. I definitely appreciate the feedback, I guess there'll always be questions, but things are definitely a little clearer now. Re: [videoblogging] Re: Other People's Videos
Thanks Eddie for the feedback. FYI: I actually had linked to your original post as well as to the site in the credit line. The permalink's located on the date (March 19, 2006). Since I had the site link in the entry text already, I removed it from the credit line and just kept the permalink. Less confusing that way. I also reworded it to Originally posted on…. I think that should do it. Melanie P.S. Glad to help with the traffic. Maybe change the Posted on Geek Entertainment TV.. to Originally posted on.. or Reposted from. Also, use our permalink to the piece, rather than a general link to our site. I like that you're embedding the vid and linking directly to our source. We still get the traffic stats and it looks good on your site. [videoblogging] Other People's Videos
Hello All, I've been going back and forth with this one for a while, and could use a little help. What's the best procedure when reposting videos from another site? Do you link from their server or save the video to yours (if you have one)? I'm concerned about using my storage space for other people's videos, but I'm also concerned (maybe more) about not having missing video somewhere down the line if the other site runs into problems. Could this also be an ethical issue of some kind? Not sure what to think. Melanie The New Media Collective It's a WE thing! http://newmediacollective.org

It is cool, but why a minute? You can see the people's discomfort. It's also kind of uncomfortable to watch them try to stay focused for so long. 30 seconds would have been more than enough. They have those too, but I mean a physical debit card that you can use just like the ones from your bank. I've had one for a while now, and it really works. As long as you have the money in your PayPal account to cover it it's all good. It takes about 2 weeks or so for them to mail it to you once you apply. [videoblogging] Announcing: The New Media Collective
Hello Everyone, My name is Melanie Morgan, and I've been videoblogging since October 2005 (http://nyc-tv.com), and blogging since April '05. I've also been lurking on this forum for a while, and have really learned a lot; some of which I've applied to my newest project, The New Media Collective (launched February 1 2006). The focus of this site is to showcase digital media makers of color (videobloggers, podcasters, bloggers, photobloggers); to let people know—and see—that we're very present in the digital realm. Although not actually a videoblog, the site will have video on it, as well as other media. The goal is to create an information resource and social network teaching and promoting citizen media, particularly to those who would not otherwise have knowledge of, or access to it. We all need to know and understand these outlets and technologies and use them to tell our own stories—accurately. If you find any of this of interest, please check out the site (http://newmediacollective.org). And if you are a person of color, please add your vlog, podcast, blog or photoblog to our directory. (People need to know where to find us!) I've also included a resources page with a list of media-related sites. At this time, I'm in the process of interviewing media makers throughout the blogosphere (right now there are 2 up). As we go along, I'd like to add more content in the way of video, audio, and text articles. If anyone would like to contribute content (articles, media, site links), please let me know (melanie [at] newmediacollective [dot] org). Peace Love attachment: Signature_2.jpg BTW, this is a Node101-affiliated project based in NYC. Thanks to Ryanne and Jay, as always, for their support.
