[videoblogging] Brian Conley and Jeff Rae

2008-08-23 Thread Sarah Szalavitz
Hi,
Below are more details about Brian Conley and Jeff Rae. Email [EMAIL
PROTECTED] if you'd like to be added to the list for updates.

cheers,
Sarah

PS: Check out this coming week's episode of Alive in Baghdad; we'll have a
segment at the end about Brian and Jeff's situation.

Hello friends and family of Brian Conley and Alive in Baghdad,

If you haven't heard about Brian's detention, along with 5 others in Beijing,
please see this article from the Washington Post

UPDATE

Around 5 am US Eastern Standard Time Brian's family received calls from the US
Embassy in Beijing. An Embassy representative had visited Brian and the 5 other
detainees, and we were assured that they were doing ok. Brian had written
messages to different family members and he seemed in good spirits. He seems to
be coping well with the situation and is finding solace and distraction in
speaking Arabic with another detainee!

All 6 men are being held with other international detainees, though not all
together. They are in rooms of about 10 people each.

The Embassy expects they will be released and deported without incident at the
end of their 10 day sentence, on July 30. Brian's notes to family indicated the
same.

Of note, 4 other people working with Students for a Free Tibet, who were
detained on August 21, were also sentenced to 10 days administrative detention.
See http://freetibet2008.org/ for more information.

All of the detainees were working to increase awareness about the Chinese
government's occupation of Tibet and repression of dissent. Tibetans face
repression on a completely different scale than foreign journalists and
activists.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

We are happy to have confirmation of the detainees well-being and appreciate
the Embassy's work. But our work is not done, because we can still advocate for
their early release and fair treatment during detention.

Students for a Free Tibet is recommending the following as an advocacy
strategy. See below for specific information on calling elected officials.

· close friends and family of the detained: contact their elected officials and
urge humane treatment during the detention and a speedy and safe release of all
international detainees (now 10, 8 of whom are US citizens)

· anyone who has close contacts in Congressional offices or the State
Department: please do the same

· all others: please wait to contact government officials. We want to maintain
clear and constant pressure for action, but don't want to overwhelm and annoy
them.

· everyone: continue to work on increasing media coverage of this issue, and
spreading the word among your associates

And a few things I'd add:

· Think about the big party we'll have when they get back!

· Figure out ways you can provide support (emotional and other) to Brian and
the other detainees. The situation could be worse, but it can't have been easy.

· Donate to Students for a Free Tibet. They've put in a lot of money, time,
sweat and tears on this issue. The last few weeks is a small part of their
overall work.

Thanks for all your good thoughts and work to help get them home.

Eowyn (Brian's wife) and friends

>From Students for a Free Tibet:

When calling the State representative or Senators:

It is important to call the Congressperson that represents the district where
your family member/friend is registered. U.S. Senators are by State not
district, so call the ones responsible for New York, or Pennsylvania.

Here is a list of congressional representatives:

NEW YORK:

For Tom Grant: His Congressman is Jerold Nadler (District 8, New York). The
person to speak to in the district office is Ellen Wallach, the Director of
Constituent Services: 212-367-7350.
For Michael Liss, Jeff Goldin and Jeremy Wells: Their Congresswoman is
Carolyn Maloney (District 14, New York). There is no one specifically assigned
to constituent services at the moment, so best to call the general district
office number: 212-860-0606.
For James Powderly and John Watterberg: Their Congresswoman is Nydia
Velázquez and the person in the Washington D.C. office who handles these
situations is Max Trujillo and can be reached by calling the general number and
asking for him: 202-225-2361.

PENNSYLVANIA:

For Brian Conley: His Congressman is Chaka Fattah (District 2, Pennsylvania).
The person to speak to in their district office is Ilona Glover: 215-387-6404.
For Jeff Rae: His Congressman is Joe Sestak (District 7, Pennsylvania).
Call the district office at: 610-892-8623.

Here is a list of U.S. Senators for NY and Pennsylvania:

[videoblogging] March 20th--Friends of Alive in Baghdad Viral Promo videos

2007-03-15 Thread Sarah Szalavitz

Hi,

Great to see many of you at SXSW. Very inspiring!!! Now very tired and
have no voice! :)

A few weeks back, a few friends (Kent Nicholls, Invisible Engine,
Mickipedia, yours truly and some non vlogging types) of Alive in Baghdad
got together to make some funny videos to encourage folks to donate
equipment and money to AIB.

We will be launching these videos on March 20th, which is the anniversary of
the invasion of Iraq, and are seeking to have these videos featured by as
many video sites as we can. We would love to have as many friends
participate as we can and would be delighted to have you all involved!

We have made 12 little videos—and one large compilation of all of our
videos. They are silly little viral videos--NOT AIB videos--if they suit
your site, or you'd like to show some support on March 20th by linking to
the vids or to AIB itself, we'd be thrilled! And, of course, if you know
major media types who might be interested, we'd be delighted. It looks like
we will be featured on all the major sites on the 20th, and it would be
great to get some more viewers and perhaps some donations to Alive In
Baghdad.

If you are interested in checking out the videos or would like more details
on who is already participating or anything else, please send me an email
individually and I will send you an invite to view a rough-cut compilation
of the videos in a private section of YouTube. You will then receive an
invite from "OnlineVideoShare" (or the answers to your questions).

Thanks so much! Hope you enjoy the vids!

Cheers,
Sarah Szalavitz

[videoblogging] France Bans Citizen Journalists from Reporting Violence...please digg:)

Hey,

Have you heard that France is trying to ban citizen journalism? Its
unbelievably draconian...

unfortunately) and digg it!

RE: [videoblogging] Veoh new features...cool!

2006-12-22 Thread Sarah Szalavitz

Thanks! We launched a couple cool new features: Veoh will automatically
(if you so chose) publish your videos on Myspace, YouTube and Google Video,
saving you the hassle of uploading to multiple sites. And you can build
your own channel--as a publisher or a viewer.

We'd love to hear your feedback. We are working towards our big launch and
want to empower our publishers with easy tools that allow you to reach your
audiences and make some money! We'll be launching more tools soon,
including automatic transcoding to multiple formats. Anyway, check it out
and let me know what you think!

Cheers and happy holidays!

Sarah Szalavitz

PS: Its been fantastic to be a part of this group, to listen to, learn and
watch it all unfold--thank you for welcoming me in and teaching me so much!
I look forward to so much more in the magical new year of 2007 --its so
exciting to be on this threshold of a new future of storytelling.

RE: [videoblogging] Re: anyone have any experience with veoh.com?

2006-11-29 Thread Sarah Szalavitz

Hi Bill,

My name is Sarah Szalavitz and I both a videoblogger and the director of
content development at Veoh.

I did indeed send you an email a few weeks back, but actually, I never
received an email back from you. I am sorry about the inconvenience//missed
communication between us...sometimes email is less reliable then I realize.
Either way, LoFi Saint Louis is awesome-and it would be great to feature
your work on Veoh.

I must assure you, I am not sending spam--I send individual emails or make
calls to creators whose work I enjoy. It is a time intensive but rewarding
process. I spend a lot of time seeking out great creators and great videos!
When, I watch something I like, I send an email to that effect and invite
the creator to join Veoh.

I'd be delighted to answer any questions you may have and hope that I can
bring you and your work to Veoh.

Thank you!

Cheers,
Sarah Szalavitz

I am seeking quality episodic storytelling. I am excited to work with people
to discover what works--and to push the dimensions of this kind of
storytelling. In my last job, I worked in feature film development--I love
working on story, character and structure. I care about words, acting,
lighting, and composition:) I believe that talent matters--and that good
storytelling will rise to the top. I care about reaching people and am
excited to discover what affects people--and definitely have no idea yet:)

My job is to make Veoh value creators work and creativity. I am in this job

that the possiblitiies are endless! I welcome your ideas and feedback!

The times are changing:) Videoblogs, viewing habits and opportunities are
changing! It will be exciting to see what wins out.

[videoblogging] Hello from a Newcomer...

2006-11-14 Thread Sarah Szalavitz

Hi VideoBloggers,

My name is Sarah Szalavitz and I recently joined the group, so I thought I'd
introduce myself. I am a once and future vlogger (projects about to
launch..watch out:))
... and an indie producer. I spent a year in India making a documentary
(initially about why american's should travel...and now, its become a more
long term project, about a reincarnation of a tibetan lama (born in Ibiza)
who has left the monastery). I come from a lot of different worlds of
storytelling--politics, technology, law and most recently film--and am so
excited to be at the forefront of the next kind of storytelling and
expression!

I have also just started to work as the Director of Content Development at
Veoh.com, which will soon launch out of beta. Its my job to bring creators
to our website and to make Veoh as responsive and supportive as we can be to
creators and producers.

Through reaching out to some of you individually (been watching an awful
lot of video lately) and through others reaching out to me, I have
discovered that, prior to my tenure at Veoh, our outreach to the Vlogging
community left quite a lot to be desired. While I was not even a twinkle in
the Veoh eye at that point, I will do my best to make sure it will not
happen again--and would love your feedback, thoughts and suggestions!

I am not a marketing person--or a spy (maybe one day if this whole
storytelling thing doesnt pan out...). I am just another producer trying to
figure out and be a part of the future of storytelling. I
can't tell you how inspiring it has been to join this world and to watch so
much of your work. I look forward to more.

Cheers,
Sarah Szalavitz
