[videoblogging] Re: Anyone Going to YouTube NYC 777?

2007-07-06 Thread joshuajcohen
Woah. Great information with an awesome finish. Thanks for the find,
Adam.

I'll be wandering around Washington Square Park for a few. Shoot me
an e-mail or give me a call if you're going to be around. Would like
to meet up with anyone from the group.

2007-10-03 Thread joshuajcohen
These guys definitely paid for it out of pocket, at least the first
half-dozen episodes. I've met the crew a few times in NYC - very cool
guys - and interviewed them back in June - http://tinyurl.com/393pwp -
right after they signed with UTA.

Awesome show. One of my favorites on the web.

[videoblogging] Online Video Contests

2008-03-05 Thread joshuajcohen
A site that a lot of people on this group will be interested in.

Simple, constantly updated list of online video contests with brief
synopsis of each, how many days until the deadline, and how much $$
they offer.

Created by Justin Johnson who's also involved with www.indymogul.com
and www.nextnewnetworks.com (but the site isn't affiliated with them -
it's Justin's own thing).

If you want more background/info, I also recently talked to Justin
about the site:
http://www.tilzy.tv/news/2008/3/Online-Video-Contests.htm.

Lots of cool opportunities for filmmakers.

[videoblogging] Re: Other Tube Mogul-like Options

2008-03-29 Thread joshuajcohen
Andrew - Have you checked out Vidmetrix? www.vidmetrix.com. I haven't
used them (we're currently using Tubemogul to distribute all our
interviews), but I've heard some good things in reference to their
reporting. However, Tubemogul distributes to more sites.

Tim - I've read you arguments before about how some video
hosting/sharing sites (including Revver and blip) create RSS feeds for
one's content. You're correct - it's really messed up. What happens
if a few thousand people are subscribed through your show's Revver
feed and then Revver goes out of business? You're out a few thousand
subscribers. You're also missing out on ways to monitize those
subscribers through an RSS feed that you own and operate.

It should either be A) be an opt-in service that these sites provide
and not something that's automatically generated and/or B) allow you
to insert your own RSS feed as the subscription options.

In regards to Tubemogul and other "free" services, it's like with
anything else - I think you gotta take it on a case by case basis. I
like Tubemogul and I've spoken with Brett a few times and found him to
be a great guy, so I feel comfortable using his product.

[videoblogging] Rootclip - Collaborative Storytelling Choose Your Adventure Contest

2008-05-15 Thread joshuajcohen
Just discovered Rootclip - http://rootclip.com. Long explanation
short, it's a collaborative storytelling / choose your adventure
contest site.

The founders of the site create the first clip (aka "rootclip"). Then
users submit videos of what happens in the next minute. Viewers vote
on which one makes the official cut. Wash, rinse, repeat, until the
6th/Final round, when only winners from previous rounds can submit.

You end up with a 6 or so minute story from 5 different voices all
created with audience approval. Awesome concept. Check it out.

[videoblogging] The Streamys - Web Television Awards

2009-01-22 Thread joshuajcohen
Hey all - Thought I had posted an update to this earlier, but looks
like it didn't go through. ANYWAY...

Tilzy.TV, NewTeeVee, and Tubefilter have put together The Streamys -
www.streamys.org - to recognize and honor outstanding achievement in
online original series. Nominations close tomorrow/Friday at midnight,
so be sure to get those entries in ASAP.

The site has all the details, but if anyone has any specific questions
feel free to e-mail me (joshuaATtilzyDOTtv) or post them below.

We've gotten over 50K nominations so far and it's shaping out to be an
awesome event. We're all really excited about it.

ALSO, if you're interested in volunteering to help with the awards
ceremony (which will take place March 28 in LA), here's a form you can
fill out - http://streamys.org/volunteer.shtml.

Thanks! - Josh

[videoblogging] Re: Meet the elite!

2009-03-09 Thread joshuajcohen
Rupert - You bring up some great points and valid concerns. Let me try to
address them:

1) Limit on numbers - We wanted to limit the initial numbers of the IAWTV so we
could create a nimble organization that in its inaugural years is capable of
getting a lot accomplished. That includes designing an organizational structure
that will address a lot of the online video community's concerns. In too many
instances we've seen fledgling organizations buckle under the weight of their
membership before they were ever able to really get off the ground.

I think we have a great core group that's a well-balanced mix of independent
content creators, executives, agents, and other creatives who are invested in
the industry and its future. In the coming months they'll shape the way the
academy grows and the induction process for new members.

That being said, I would love to see more independent content creators
represented as the IAWTV moves forward and if you have any suggestions on the
types of, or specific people you'd like to see in the academy, please send them
over.

2) International - Agreed, there admittedly isn't a whole lot of representation
outside of the US at this moment, but hopefully that will quickly change (in
fact, we're building in support for non-English language selections for next
year's Streamy Awards).

Again, if Jeffrey or anyone else has recommendations for people who live
outside the US who are dedicated to the space, please send those names over.

3) And to Jeffrey's point, ultimately the IAWTV is about providing legitimacy
to and growing the web television space. I think an organization like this can
have a much bigger voice than the sum of its parts and bring a lot more
well-deserved recognition to the online video community as a whole, which I
believe is good for everyone.

Moving forward, I also hope the IAWTV is able to accomplish a lot of what
Jeffrey mentioned: best practices and labor standards and providing guidelines
and resources for emerging talent.

We all realize the IAWTV is a nascent organization within a burgeoning
industry. If you have any suggestions on membership or roles you see that the
academy could play, please get in touch. - Josh
