[videoblogging] FireAnt

2005-08-18 Thread BevSykes

Someone here recommended FireANT.  I've
downloaded it...and I have a question.  If you start listening to a
podcast, how do you STOP it?  Even if I delete the file that I started
playing, it continues playing.  There must be an easy answer to
this!

[videoblogging] FireAnt

2005-09-07 Thread BevSykes

I attempted to download the latest version of
FireAnt and install on my computer (XP).  It brought up a "malicious file"
message with the recommendation to stop the install instantly, which I
did.  Now, of course, my old version of FireAnt has disappeared.  Can
you assure me that 1.0b6 is perfectly safe to install?

[videoblogging] Fireant issue.

2005-11-27 Thread NOYELLE Michael
Hi everyone. I'm quite a newbie here, so I reckon someone has already
had this problem in the past.

I got the feed for my vlog (http://vlogstory.blogspot.com) and I
posted one video. But when I use Fireant to verify if everything is ok
with my feed, I cannot download the video I posted, but I only see the
text. It's like I posted a written message but no video.

I am just wondering why that is.

Thank you in advance for your help. Have a good one.

2005-08-18 Thread Randolfe Wicker

Bev, with Windows XP I just click the space on the
blue bar across the bottom of the screen(which is really the link for that
window) and click "close".  What I haven't figured out to do on vlogs
I watch through the FireANT list is how to go back to place a comment after the
video has ended.   I have to close the window and then click back in
through the FireANT menu.  It's not a big deal but somehow it seems like
running around the house twice just to get to the other side.

Commenting if fireANT is made to be really easy.

All you have to do is click the little talk/bubble thingy under the
video and it will open the exact comment page for that video in your
default browser.

I originally did it the way you describe, and, then, when someone told
me how easy it was I was pretty surprised.

You can disregard the warning. There is nothing malicious in FireANT.
Those warnings pop up whenever something wants to connect to the
internet, which FireANT needs to do by its nature.

Sorry that if that seems scary... we'll try to do something to disable
it from provoking that warning.

Looks like the warning comes from Notron Anti-virus which is very
picky picky.
It is very concerned when a program tries to connect to the Internet.
You can disregard the warning. I know it looks scary. We're going to

Re: [videoblogging] Fireant issue.

2005-11-27 Thread Joshua Kinberg
Hey Michael,

You're almost there. Check out http://FreeVlog.org and go to step #6.
You need to transform your Atom feed to RSS format.
You can do this at FeedBurner by enabling your feed "for podcasting".

Hope this helps,
Josh

PS: please use the Send Feedback and Report Bug features in FireAnt so
that any request goes directly to our development team.

[videoblogging] FireAnt acquired by Odeo

2007-09-14 Thread Joshua Kinberg
Today it was announced that FireAnt's software and technology
was acquired by SonicMountain, a company that
also recently acquired Odeo (see:
).

I've been asked to join the new team, serving as VP of Product
Development, and will be heading up FireAnt's transition (among other
projects) as we re-launch everything under the Odeo brand later this
year.

First of all, I want to say Thank You to everyone in the videoblogging
community who supported FireAnt along the way, especially Jay Dedman,
Daniel Salber, Erik Radmall, and Clint Sharp, who were instrumental in
launching this project. We met a lot of wonderful creative people, and
made some really important lifelong friendships. It's been an amazing
privilege to contribute to this dynamic and innovative community, and
especially to have been involved from such an early stage. I also want
to thank Jonathan Weiss, Drew Reynaud, and Jesse Boley who continued
FireAnt's technology development over the past year, which was demo'd
at Video on the Net in March 2007.

When we first launched "ANTs Not TV" at Vloggercon in January 2005,
there were about 20 active videobloggers – we knew each of them
personally and worked with most of them to create those magical RSS
feeds with enclosures. It was amazing to see all these video channels
updating over time and to watch them in a unified experience. There
was nothing else like it. It was clear that something powerful was
happening. It was a new kind of television, and yet it was not like TV
at all – it was open to anyone and the possibilities seemed endless.

And it began to spread… thanks to the many talented and creative video
producers, educators, and evangelists.

While FireAnt had its share of struggles along the way as a start up,
I'm encouraged that the ideas we helped pioneer have grown incredibly
stronger over the past few years. This "Not TV" (now more often called
"Internet TV") is really changing the media culture, and it's having
profound social effects. The medium is enabling new voices and
conversations. The playing field is being leveled – the barriers
between "Internet TV" and "TV" are disintegrating.

So it's up to us to create what we want to see and share… We don't
have to rely on Rupert Murdoch and Sumner Redstone to create our
culture. Thank goodness!

I look forward to watching your videos (and subscribing!). When I get
back to producing a more regular videoblog (or whatever it's called),
I hope you'll subscribe and leave me a comment :-)

Best,
Josh

do other people have more fireAnt users showing up?

Re: [videoblogging] FireANT or iTunes

2005-08-03 Thread Stephanie Bryant

Josh, I hope it does full-screen. That's the only thing missing in
FireANT. I know "ANT's not TV," but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy
plugging it into the TV and watching all my feeds one after the other.
Without a fullscreen ANT, I'm reduced to opening the files directly in
QuickTime from the ANT download folder, which means I get no further
information, not even the feed title, just whatever is in that video
clip.

To answer the original question: I was using both, because of this
issue. But now all of my iTunes library is on the external hard
drive... which is upstairs and the TV is downstairs in my home. So I
can no longer get the iTunes full-screen option unless I drag the
external drive downstairs.

I still have FireANT set up to download video to the local hard drive.

Re: [videoblogging] FireAnt acquired by Odeo

2007-09-14 Thread Steve Garfield
Ah memories.

It was an amazing time. being able to watch everyone else's video
back then.

Every... single... video... that everyone else made.

Working with Daniel Salber on FireAnt for the Mac was a great
experience. New features and bug fixes that I suggested were always
implemented quickly.

Being able to work that closely with a developer was lots of fun.

Sadly the Macintosh development didn't keep up with the PC
development and I ended up dropping FireAnt and moving to Miro.

During this period, my Mac crashed and I ended up starting over and
subscribing to fewer feeds.

What's happening now is that I only subscribe to about 13 RSS 2.0
feeds with media enclosures. Others I subscribe to, but go watch online.

I find many new videos via Twitter, Email, IM and Facebook.

Another thing I frequently talked to Jay about was getting the
ability to be able to see what others using Fireant were subscribed
to, and beyond that, see what videos they liked or recommended.

That feature would have been cool.

Good luck with Odeo Josh. I'm interested in seeing what happens.

Re: [videoblogging] FireAnt acquired by Odeo

2007-09-14 Thread Joshua Kinberg
Before I forget to mention it:

I also wanted to send a VERY heartfelt thank you to Jennifer Myronuk,
who took the last 8 months off to help me find a good home for
FireAnt's software and really supported me, even when things were
tough.

Jen's a citizen journalist/documentary video enthusiast who was in the
process of launching her own software (a FileMaker shareware program
called "StoryField") when she stepped in to help out. (She's also my
fiance).

Thank you, Jen.

This space is all about community -- especially the personal space to
grow and experience what you're made of.

I'm definitely in awe of all of the great work being produced from the
teams at Miro and MeFeedia (and many others) and am honored to have
had the opportunity to have been part of a early software project and
exchange ideas along the way with many great people.

of FireAnt, he and his girlfriend, Jen, deserve the credit for pulling

2007-09-15 Thread Andrew Baron
Cross posted: http://www.dembot.com/014169.html

Josh, founder and creator of FireAnt is one person who has always
been on the about page of Rocketboom. We met at school and connected
over building the first blog at Parsons School of Design and always
discussed online patterns and activity throughout the 2004 elections.

In particular we talked alot about the development of Rocketboom and
Ant.

During that time, Josh found out about Adam Curry who was working on
the same kinds of problems with audio. I remember when Josh first
told me about this, we snickered in kinda of a nostalgic way, the
same way you would if you just found out that Martha Quinn was
building robots and programing micro-controllers.

When Josh, Kenyatta and I were building out the backend and strategy
for Rocketboom, especially from August through October, 2004, Josh
had come up with an elegant proof of concept for an aggregator that
focused on pulling video files with an Apple Script. Nothing that
Curry and Winer had missed but nonetheless, they along with almost
everyone else were tunnel visioned on audio (and pdf files!?).

Perhaps one reason for the disconnect occurred because of the
difference in application. Podcasters were ultimately enamored with
transferring mp3 files to the shiny shiny (i.e. the ipod) automatically.

With Rocketboom however, there was no shiny shiny (i.e. the video
ipod) at the time but we saw the aggregator as the killer app for
bandwidth limits and thick compression settings on the delivery of
large video files. Pretty files sent to computers over night while
people sleep to be available in full local playback glory,
scrollable, jumpable, and without delay when ready for viewing was
where it would be at.

In October 2004 knowing that video enclosures would catch on very
soon, when Rocketboom did launch, I made sure we had them working for
the few people who used Josh's player. I also of course noticed that
there was no way to offer multiple file types in the enclosure fields
and decided the only solution would be to offer multiple feeds (we
launched with several).

Right around that time, Podcasting was starting to gain momentum and
I always noticed how almost no one else was talking about using RSS
for video. It was kinda like the Twilight Zone actually in that
regard. Even through most of 2005, while podcasting was totally
exploding, very few people took interest in the use of RSS with video
enclosures. Perhaps it was because the news angle was mostly
generated from a radio show fanatic slash tech geek-angle and the
disruption they were casing to the radio industry.

There were two main public brain trusts through 2005 that existed
separately on the web where on-the-pulse information about
development in the nascent industry made its way in: [1] the podcasting group
on Yahoo vs. [http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/
videoblogging/">2] the Videoblogging group on Yahoo.

As for #1, my bafflement with podcasters and music fans who still
deal with mp3 crap compression remains. A great beauty of the audio
aggregator is that you can deliver very high quality audio files (not
a problem to offer the mp3 versions too for the losers), but
whatever, people used to take playback quality much more seriously in
the good 'ol days of wax and lasers.

As for #2, the excitement fueled by foresight into the implications
behind a world shift in media, would soon drove user testing,
adoption and good will to Ant (later served with a no-no letter on
the name, btw), so FireAnt, with "the" surrounding directory of
videobloggers was where the http://www.dembot.com/
006316.html">first party started.

Perhaps we will never know but I feel very strongly that Josh's
development of the initial player gave Apple their best look at what
I always hoped they would acquire, but instead, built themselves. In
a single moment in October of 2005 with the release of the video iPod
and video podcasting in iTunes, Apple opened up the concept of video
online to the masses (er, you know what I mean) and essentially took
a great deal of FireAnt's steam. Coincidentally, the prior release of
Apple's audio podcasting client in iTunes stole the same kind of
steam from Odeo so it makes since that these two companies would come
together for a return match.

Apple's strategy for growth was and continues to remain stealth and
secretive, closed and proprietary. They probably get away with it
because their products are so good. But Apple's aggregating features
have never been as good as FireAnt's which strated off as open sourse
and remained open on the frontend.

I consider Josh to be a major pioneer in the space for being one of
the first, if not the first to create a video specific aggregator,
going on to win the support of the videoblogging community, growing a
business from an early 2.0-like application, sustaining the onslaught
of

Re: [videoblogging] FireAnt acquired by Odeo

2007-09-15 Thread Rupert
It's great. Congrats. Nice summary, Andrew.

I wonder whether at the same time as making many more people aware of
it, Apple actually set back video podcasting with iTunes. It so
limited people's ability to connect with the creators and the whole
watching experience was so bad, and so focussed on the iPod, that I'm
sure lots of people have been turned off the idea of subscribing to
video podcasts. Or at best, are mystified as to what the point of it
all is.

Now that the shininess of the iTunes and iPod experience is wearing
off (at least for me - i used to use both a lot when commuting, and
don't anymore) I think there's space opening up again in the market.
Apple had their Shock & Awe chance to revolutionise video consumption
and they blew it, in my opinion. Will be really interested to see
whether this new Odeo/Ant combined effort can come back and fill the
gap now that awareness and need has developed. Subscribing to and
watching videos is only half of what it's about - the secret sauce,
in my opinion, is in the connections with the creators.

Re: [videoblogging] fireant reporting in feedburner

2006-02-24 Thread Joshua Kinberg
This thread was also posted in our FireAnt user group, so I'm going to
paste my response here as well
--
Hmmm... I wonder if Feedburner is looking for the wrong FireAnt
useragent... we changed it when we changed the name from "FireANT" to
"FireAnt". We will need to follow up with the Feedburner guys to check
on this

Here's the other thing with iTunes... it checks all the feeds each
time you fire up the iTunes application, which may be pretty often if
you like listening to music. FireAnt does not check the feeds unless
the user tells it to do so. iTunes may also check feeds multiple times
per day, thus skewing "subscriber" numbers (those numbers are highly
suspect anyhow, so I wouldn't really trust it as a true indication of
how many subscribers you really have. I'm not really sure how those
numbers are generated)

As Jay pointed out, try including a FireAnt subscription button on
your site and its likely you will then see more subscribers in FA.
FireAnt is a little different than DTV and iTunes in that we really
try to keep all your meta-info in tact. This includes the textual
information in a blog entry and especially links. Thus, by encouraging
your viewers to use FireAnt, its quite likely that you will actually
get more traffic back to your site from FireAnt.

Re: DTV... I think your feed, "Motion Graphics Chicago" was included
on the front of the DTV Channel Guide for a long time, so that could
be why you are seeing more subscribers there as well.

To get more promotion through the FireAnt website, try going in and
adding tags and ratings to your channel the episodes in it. We need
some more help from the community to try to push up content, so it
wouldn't hurt to tell other people to vote you up as well if they like
your stuff. We are also planning to re-architect the front page of
FireAnt.tv pretty soon to make it more dynamic so that it features
more content and changes more regularly. This should also help bring
more promotion to more vloggers.

And speaking of promotion, we could always use your help in the
promotion department. You guys know us, and you probably also know
that we're fairly modest when it comes to self promoting. We don't
really do press releases, and we hardly even promote FireAnt on the
videoblogging mailing list (we see that more as a discussion
environment than a promotional one). So, please give us a boost and
blog about FireAnt if you can. Your help really goes a long way.

2006-02-24 Thread Daniel Hehmann

I've got a question about FireAnt, so I figured I'd ask it here. Is there any way to view the vids in full screen? I've tried double clicking, alt+enter, seaching for a button, etc. and I've yet to be able to do it. I really like FireAnt but I rarely use it because I like watching vids in full screen. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.Joshua Kinberg <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: This thread was also posted in our FireAnt user group, so I'm going to paste my response here as well -- Hmmm... We have fullscreen viewing available for Quicktime videos in the Mac version.Fullscreen viewing is not yet available in the Windows version, but it is definitely on our roadmap. Until then, you can view the video at maximum size by selecting the "Viewer Mode" toggle button in the toolbar (looks like a TV screen).

I assume it's just the same old windows version of fireant, but it's black,
and has a new name.

They should have made it "mocha" like zune's most infamous color. :)

Just joking though, I'm really pleased to see Fireant siezing the moment.

Re: [videoblogging] Fireant podcatcher for the zune

2006-12-14 Thread Joshua Kinberg
Hi all,

We haven't really posted about this one here yet... glad someone else
broke the news. We were mostly trying to hit our target launch date to
coincide with the Zune launch, and by all accounts, FeedYourZune had a
very successful launch and filled an important niche that Microsoft
left out of their initial product offering with the Zune.

This version of FireAnt is completely new and redesigned -- definitely
not the "same old windows version." Please download and let us know
what you think. FeedYourZune is the result of a lot of hard work over
the past few months to re-architect FireAnt -- which is still
in-progress. Expect more to come soon...

In addition to the entirely redesigned UI, one of the other main
features is that FireAnt can be easily branded/skinned. Over the next
several months, we plan to launch several different "powererd by
FireAnt" branded media players with various partners.

Please stay tuned for much more to come...

Looking forward to your feedback!

Best,
Josh

Hey Josh.
Good luck with the brandable app business.

I booted up my PC and downloaded it.
Couldnt get things going :(
Here is a screengrab:
http://spreadthemedia.org/files/feedyourzune_crash.jpg

Should I clean out the fireant app first?

The UI looked pretty slick from what i did see.

Thanks,

Re: [videoblogging] Fireant podcatcher for the zune

2006-12-14 Thread Joshua Kinberg
Hey Sull,

Yes, Try uninstalling the old version of FireAnt first before
installing the new... this is an issue we are currently resolving.

Alternatively, you can try removing/renaming the FireAnt database located at:

C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application
Data\Mycelia Networks\FireAnt\FireAnt.fdb

Hop that helps... if you have other questions, we can go over them off-list.

Best,
Josh

2006-12-14 Thread Joshua Kinberg
Hey Josh,

I feel your pain... We're a small team with limited resources at the
moment. Over the past several months we've had to focus our energy on
the Windows version. We are currently at work on a redesigned Mac
version, but it is still in the early stages. Hopefully we'll have
something on the Mac to show you soon. We always appreciate your
feedback!

Best,
Josh

I'm sure Mac works better than the new Windows since the old Window was
horrible by my comparison. But I'll give the new PC version a try. Now people
need to by a Zune.

from the reviews of the zune, it may very well only be a "moment".

(Maybe I'm misunderstanding your question, but)As a user you would use whichever is appropriate based on what you have running on your computer.  I.e., if you have Windows, then use the Windows version of Fireant.  If you a have Mac, then use the Mac version of Fireant.
As a vlogger, you should try to make your vlog work with ALL software out there.  (Well, all that support the standards anyways.)  And not just Fireant.  (No matter how nice of an application it is.)

I can try to answer this... though I don't know if you'll be satisfied with the response...FireAnt has a different interface on Windows and on Mac. This is partly due to the fact that we've had very different developers with different styles who were creating on entirely different platforms (and because we are completely self funded, we allowed our developers to make the application *they* wanted to make). Much of the basic functionality is similar -- you can subscribe to RSS channels, download media, and watch any video no matter what format (Quicktime, Windows Media, Real, Flash, MP4, MP3, etc). Though there are some differences, such as BitTorrent support (which is coming soon to the Mac version), or full screen viewing (which is still on the roadmap for the Windows version). As we move forward, we're working to bring the functionality of each version up to the same level, and we're looking into bringing some unity to the user interface of the separate versions and come to something more similar on each platform. It will be somewhat of a challenge, but that's where we're heading.
As for support, I think you'll find that we're incredibly responsive to feedback and requests. We have limited resources but we're continuing to make progress.Hope this answers your questions...Regards,

Josh, that explains alot. Just yesterday I was playing around with Fireant on XP Pro and the interface was so different from my beloved OSX. The big problem was that Fireant downloads videos (XP) but I cant find or play them in the FA aggregator. I have to go to documents and then they open in the original format. Any suggestions? A Unified UI is important.  Good choice to work your way towards that.I'd suggest simplifying the UI on windows version even more. Can you direct me to the BitTorrent Support Documentation? I foget... does it also seed torrents or only download and play?
In other words, is FA a true BitTorrent Client? Thanks, sullOn 4/4/06, Joshua Kinberg <[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Never heard of that before! It really helps if you send bug reports when you have trouble. Of course, there are many thousands of people whom it works for just fine, so I have no idea of the specifics of your setup or what might be the trouble. Please email me off-list and we can try to work it out.

Re: [videoblogging] FireAnt Windows Vs. FireAnt Mac

2006-04-04 Thread Joshua Kinberg

No documentation needed, really. BitTorrent files download and play like any other file. While a BitTorrent file is downloading it is simultaneously seeding, as per the BitTorrent protocol. We have not added a configurable seeding ratio after download however (so perhaps it is less of a "true" Torrent client). It was our first priority to simply make Torrents download and play, and I think we've done that very well in the Windows version.
That said, I still think BitTorrent sucks in general. If a file is not at the height of its popularity, it can take a vey looong time to download (not our fault, that's just how BItTorrent is). So its not exactly the friend to the "long tail." Great for really popular stuff at the height of its popularity, sucks for everything else. Besides, there is still a very miniscule amount of BitTorrent syndicated via RSS feeds, even after 1-2 years of talk about that process. Its nice to think about, and of course we should continue to support it, but in the real world it continues to be less than a fringe case.

Re: [videoblogging] FireAnt Windows Vs. FireAnt Mac

2006-04-04 Thread Stephanie Bryant

They work the same. I find FireAnt Mac to be "easier" but that's mainly
because it's more familiar (there are some things that drive me batty
about it, just as there are some things in FireAnt Windows that drive
me batty).

They are both well-supported. I typically get a response within 24
hours if I have a question or concern, and they are both being actively
developed.

I assume you're asking because you have a Windows and a Mac and don't
know which one to use for watching vlogs. Here's a tip: Windows Media
Player is no longer supported on the Mac. So if you subscribe to one of
the few WMV vlogs out there, you should use FireAnt PC, at least until
microsoft pulls its head out of its well, you know.

That's exactly it -- I've both Windows and Mac, and 'druther run it on
one system. I've installed it on Windows for now...perhaps I'll test
it on the Mac someday...

[videoblogging] FireAnt 1-click redux [was: 1-click subscription button for FireAnt]

2006-01-31 Thread Joshua Kinberg
I've slightly edited the FireAnt 1-click subscription code.
So, for those of you who were ahead of the game and rushed to include
a FireAnt 1-click button to your site, iI'm going to have to ask you
to get the most recent one-click code to copy-paste into your site by
going to: < http://FireAnt.tv/buttonmaker >

== Changes ==
- Validated XHTML (thanks Jen!)
- External links from popup window open in new window (thanks Devlon!)
- Popup window includes link to original RSS feed URL so its easy to
copy-paste for other aggregators (thanks Andreas!)

== Why you need to get the new code ==
- It has validated XHMTL
- It makes the popup window a little larger to accomodate the new
information such as the original RSS feed link for other aggregators

Thanks to everyone for their feedback!

The RSS URL is the href attribute of the link, but not the URL of the popup.
I'm using a Javascript onclick event to trigger the popup at a
different URL than the href attribute. The popup URL is actually:

http://FireAnt.tv/subscribe?rss_url=[URL of RSS feed]

This is roughly the same code as my video popup script at:
http://joshkinberg.com/popupmaker

Taking your suggestion though, I am going to add the link to the
original feed URL at the bottom of the popup window too, so that
people can subscribe in other aggregators too by copy-pasting the URL
the "old fashioned way."

watching them on fireant how will they see the links? I know they can
go to the site from fireant...but i don't want them to have to take an
extra trip...i want it to be one stop..

Your issue isn't with FireAnt, it's with RSS. This issue is well
covered and written about in the blog community. You have to make a
decision as to whether people being able to get your content w/o having
to remember to check your site is more valuable than them seeing your
site laid out as you would choose with HTML.
