[videoblogging] Linux Militants (Was Re: Anyone have Linux?)
Just wondering if any other videobloggers have been hassled by a Linux journalist/user named Malcolm Dean about the format of their vlogs... Although I posted a message here last month asking if Galacticast works on Linux and I got unanimous responses from the group and other friends not on the group saying it works fine, this guy is telling us we should format our stuff in ancient MPEG2 formats! The thing is; we already have 5 different formats: H.264 .mov, .wmv, standard iPod .m4v (which is an MPEG compression), 3gp and YouTube flash. And since I've been told by at least 4 different Linux users that it all works fine, this guy SEEMS to be acting like an ass about it. Has anyone else had to deal with this guy before? Casey http://www.galacticast.com/ --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Casey McKinnon [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I just got an e-mail from a guy asking why Galacticast isn't available for all operating systems... apparently he was irate because it wasn't working on Linux. As far as I can tell, if he downloads the .wmv file onto his computer and opens it into his default player (Xine), it should work... Does anyone use Linux and wouldn't mind checking it out for me? I don't want to leave anyone out in the cold just because they choose an alternative to Windows... Thanks, Casey http://www.galacticast.com/ SPONSORED LINKS Fireant Individual Typepad Use YAHOO! Re: [videoblogging] Linux Militants (Was Re: Anyone have Linux?)
That's more than enough formats. Linux users are used to tracking down alternatives in order to get stuff to work for them. In this case, several of those formats can be played in Linux with VLC or Mplayer. -Josh On 6/5/06, Casey McKinnon [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Just wondering if any other videobloggers have been hassled by a Linux journalist/user named Malcolm Dean about the format of their vlogs... Well I would thing giving him a straight answer about why you don't want to do another format and leaving it at that is more than fair. If he wants to bug you about it beyond that then he's not being fair and not deserving of any more of your time. Question: Do you have separate feeds for each file format you post? If so how do you do that? Is there any reason they wouldn't just transcode WMV or QT?I know some of the other watch Internet video on your TV services use Windows Media.TV Tonic and DaveTV for example.I guess it depends on what kind of content they'll be offering. If they're just inviting a select few net video producers, they can ask for whatever format they want. Yeah I remember Andrew Barron posting the specs that Rocketboom is doing for TIVO distro. But mpeg2 still seems like overkill for the average videoblog.
