2006-01-27 Thread Bill Streeter
I've used Dreamhost for several years and they have consistantly
increased bandwidth and disk space to remain competitive. The
customer service is okay, and I've not had any problems with them. I
upgraded to their code warrior plan about a year ago when they were
offering it for half price for life. You can host up to 15 domains
on that plan and there are a few other goodies on that one too. Oh
and their refferal fees are great too. So if anyone wants to put me
in as their refferer feel free, I won't complain. But I'd recomend
them anyway, I shop around every once in a while to see if there is
a better deal around and I can't really find one.

[videoblogging] Re: Dreamhost $9.24/ yr is back

2006-01-27 Thread Bill Streeter
Yeah I can see that this type of program wouldn't work that well for
Rocketboom level numbers but then again most people aren't going to
see anything even close to those numbers any time soon. Most people
will never see them. You can have a fairly popular video blog and
not even have a fraction of the numbers that you are getting.
Rocketboom is the very rare exception, not the rule.

My video blog, for instance gets about 20,000 video downloads a
month just on Dreamhost. Some of my videos are hosted on Blip and
some is hosted on Dreamhost. No problems so far. And no letters
asking me to upgrade to a rack plan. A friend of mine got one such
notice and it had to do with CPU minutes not bandwidth. But it
turned out to be a mistake, and Dreamhost has stopped sending those
notices. Which is good because I don't think they even have any rack
space at the moment. So I would expect Dreamhost to serve me well
for awhile yet to come.

Brett;

You are totaly right, DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to
propagate worldwide. I do not see any advantage in this schema of
having a backup-host unless you know the main site is going down for
more then 48 hours.
Having a backup-host also means uploading the same stuff twice evry
time...
I think I keep it with one host and have backups on DVD. I trust my
hostingcompany in having a backup in case my backup fails and having
redundant hardware. (I know they have)
I'm not dreaming of another host.

[videoblogging] Re: Dreamhost $9.24/ yr is back

2006-01-31 Thread Steve Watkins
You could try http://www.ev1servers.net as theres at least one
dedicated option for $99 I think.

I dont really know how good or bad they are compared to price &
service of other providers, I ended up using them by accident and have
had up to 4 dedicated servers from them over the years. All I know is
theyve been consistent, they must be quite large and have been around
a while, and they dont pretend to offer unlimited bandwidth on most of
their servers, or use pictures of other peoples datacenters, or just
resell another datacenters stuff whilst pretending they do it all
themselves. (which were some problems I had when trying to find a
suitable host years ago)

There are so many variables affecting the delivery of video streams that I just do not know where to start locating the bottlenecks. But what I do know is that the stuttering and buffering pauses not only annoy me personally, but they are the major complaint of the people I am inviting to my video blog.  Part of my problem is that these people are for the most part not computer litterate or tolerant of bleeding-edge technology.  They want a good streaming experience.  They are not interested in downloading. I am doing a lot of experiments with compression and bitrates.  It's frustrating.  Stan

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Dreamhost $9.24/ yr is back

2006-01-26 Thread Markus Sandy

i tried it and it worked fine.  the service looks good.

the catch is that after one year you are supposedly hooked and now have
to pay the normal monthly fees which aren't bad, but not the cheapest
around.  also, they might eventually interest you into dedicated
hosting, which, again is not the cheapest around.

i figured for $9.24, i could use it for scratch space, check out
Dreamhost and wordpress since everyone seems to like them and grab a
new domain name. so i did.

of course, in a year, the competition will be offering 10x more for
1.95/month ;)

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Dreamhost $9.24/ yr is back

2006-01-27 Thread andrew michael baron

While no doubt these prices are super great and only getting greater, and it's a very useful automated service, there is one technical restriction that is important to understand, which is not expressed as "excitement" with this plan: Bits per second.Sometimes painting a picture works better for an explanation:Think of your website as sitting on a computer connected to the internet with a pipe. If that pipe is really large and wide, a lot of people can be coming and going very easily. If your pipe is small, it may not matter when you have just a few passerby's, but if, say, one day you get a lot of traffic, it wont all fit through your door and it will get clogged up.The only way to resolve the issue is not to get more bandwidth or more space, but rather, to get get a bigger pipe.Dreamhost typically runs, I believe, 100megabits/sec max on their dedicated servers. This is a good pipe, and can take a big hit, but not very gracefully (runs slow) and not several hits at once.To make maters worse, the low-end Dreamhost plans as mentioned, dont get a full 100mbs server. They SHARE the little pipe with others. And if one of those "others" gets some traffic, and you get some traffic, then everybody is screwed. So then Dreamhost will e-mail the "obnoxious" person who is getting lots of traffic and "invite" them to upgrade to their own 100mbs dedicated server and help out the other poor customers who are just trying to get by, not using much (appeal to emotion).Depending on how you look at it, this is not a bad thing, its merely a sign of growth; start off strapped and stumble your way up. I say stumble because you usually only upgrade after things go wrong, not before. To provide a reference point for the conversation, Rocketboom currently uses 1 dedicated 100mbs server on Dreamhost to handle the database and webpages alone and 2 dedicated 100mbs servers on Datagram to host the videos and the images, for a total of a 300mbit/sec pipe size. The 2 datagram servers are mirror images (they both hold the same video and image files) and every single request for a video or image is alternated like a switch back and forth to each of the two servers. Our audience number is about 150,000/day of steady flow and every video now gets over 250,000 downloads (mostly reaching that number over the course of a few days). Last month we used 12 terabytes of data transfer on the two Datagram servers and not more than a Terrabyte on the Dreamhost server (mostly html and xml pages). In the morning, about 5 minutes after I ping a couple of sites, do to aggregators taking automatic action all at once, our pipes get completely maxed out (300mbs full on) for about 30 minutes while things run slow. Now it's time to spread out the pings. It's also time for us to add another 200 megabits or so to allow for any additional, unusual traffic during that time and to consider upgrading to a single 1000 megabit server pipe on Datagram, with a desire to keep things running smoothly no matter what happens. As another reference point, we have been though some pretty heavy days where a lot of major sites have linked to us all at once, and having 300mbits has worked fine (as long as it was not around the release hour where the aggregators were all at work). As an aside, you can imagine how efficient and cheap it would be if all of those aggregators were using p2p distribution, because all of those people could be sharing the bandwidth amoungst themselves and via closer proximities. The moral of the story is, if you anticipate growth and wish to provide a solid user experience so that everyone gets their file quickly and easily, a strategy we have demanded from the start which, I believe, used to put almost all of the major news video sites to shame with their famous "buffering messages", get a bigger pipe (and dont stream!). On the contrary, if you are just doing your own thing and dont really care about that, or only become effected minimally from time to time, smile on about that $9 plan.It would be interesting to hear some stats from some of the big aggregators or video hosting sites like Vimeo, Ourmedia, Blip, etc. I assume Archive.org talks in terms of warehouses per country. On Jan 26, 2006, at 7:04 PM, Ronen wrote: What's the catch here?On 1/26/06, bleedxapathy <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: dammit!i just used Deal90 this week!On 1/26/06, Patrick < [EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Go to http://dreamhost.com Select: the L1 "Crazy Domain Insane" hosting plan. Thanks for proving another good reference point for this

BTW, without the need to instill fear or discourage anyone from
worrying about having to pay for a larger plan just because of one
day or one week, just have a back-up plan in place.

For example, I have two rolls of heavy duty plastic, 4 rolls of duct-
tape, two gas masks with extra containers, some cans of food and a
multi-band radio to take down into the basement near a wrench I have
stashed to disconnect the hot water heater where I could likely hang
out for awhile.

In the case of being on the $9 plan from Dreamhost, just call a
friend (especially who has a sever account at an office or a
university) now, and try and set something up so that one day,
especially if you are expecting something, you could just make a call
and not go down that day or just be down for a very short transfer
period time. It likely wont even cost you or them anything.

So many free options for handling a big day have sprung up, you could
always of course design a backup plan with free sites like Google,
Ourmedia, etc. It may take some work and not look as nice but you
could definitely keep it running easily with a little creative thinking.

At any moment, if things get ruff here in one of the most likely
places on earth to get nuked,

Good advice, Andrew. I recommend that the friend at the university check
whatever papers he signed when he got access to the network. At least my
school have very strict rules on what the university servers can be used
for (research only). It's a really dumb thing to get into trouble for.
Same thing goes for office guy.

Anyway, as you say there are also other places like Ourmedia that can
help. Having stuff on Dreamhost for the everyday, but cross-posting to
Ourmedia in case one gets Slashdotted is a good idea. Then you can do the
old switcharo with a Quicktime reference movie when the going gets tough.

This is an easy fix.The problem is that you have video on your site so each person who is coming down your pipe is acting like a monster and sticking around while the download the big file.If you use Andrea's good idea of simply making a reference video (this is basically just a  pointer that takes only a few k), people will come and go so fast and they wont get in each others way or clogged up.Or, if you just change the video link in your post to point to your backup, your Dreamhost plan may hold-up even better because each person only needs a few k and their gone.On Jan 29, 2006, at 11:27 AM, Brett Gaylor wrote: I have a loaded pistol under my pillow and a crate of ramen noodles in my toilet tank.My backup plan of server switches, however, has a snag: Any time you switch servers, you have to change the DNS, right?  Is there a way to make this faster ? i figured for $9.24, i could use it for scratch space, check out

I just took my own advise and did the noodle-in-the-toilet fix for Rocketboom too, just in case. Here is a file I put on my server:http://rocketboom.com/backup.htmlIf things get ruff, all I must be able to do is (hopefully! May require a call to in if the server is clogged) is FTP into the server, delete the index.html file and then rename the file backup.html to index.html and then everyone will see the backup file:http://www.rocketboom.com/backup.htmlIf someone here doesn't know how to create a simple html page, just goto the link above and do a "save-as" html page. Open up the page in a text editor and change the contents to fit your specs. On Jan 29, 2006, at 1:38 PM, andrew michael baron wrote: This is an easy fix.The problem is that you have video on your site so each person who is coming down your pipe is acting like a monster and sticking around while the download the big file.If you use Andrea's good idea of simply making a reference video (this is basically just a  pointer that takes only a few k), people will come and go so fast and they wont get in each others way or clogged up.Or, if you just change the video link in your post to point to your backup, your Dreamhost plan may hold-up even better because each person only needs a few k and their gone.On Jan 29, 2006, at 11:27 AM, Brett Gaylor wrote: I have a loaded pistol under my pillow and a crate of ramen noodles in my toilet tank.My backup plan of server switches, however, has a snag: Any time you switch servers, you have to change the DNS, right?  Is there a way to make this faster ? just change the video link in your post to point to your backup, your

yup, its a good idea.  Although it's basically what most of us do
anyway: we host our videos at ourmedia or blip, but our html and RSS at
blogspot or our own hosted domains.

I must say I was amazed to hear you say that you host your HTML with
dreamhost.  Speaking of which: can anyone comment on the speed of
dreamhost to serve videos, and how much bandwidth they can allow for
this 10 buck rate?

So, since Dreamhost is out of Virtual Dedicated servers, can anyone recommend a similarly priced solution? We need dedicated, for around $100/month.This is not for a videoblog, but is for videos. We're using Datapipe now, which is very very good, but we're paying far out the ass for it.
I have a feeling there's something cheaper out there.AQ

I just got an email back from Dreamhost today saying that they in fact are not out of dedicated servers. On 1/31/06,

You could try http://www.ev1servers.net as theres at least one

I dont really know how good or bad they are compared to price &
service of other providers, I ended up using them by accident and have
had up to 4 dedicated servers from them over the years. All I know is
theyve been consistent, they must be quite large and have been around
a while, and they dont pretend to offer unlimited bandwidth on most of
their servers, or use pictures of other peoples datacenters, or just
resell another datacenters stuff whilst pretending they do it all
themselves. (which were some problems I had when trying to find a
suitable host years ago)
