One thing to keep in mind is that the way music works depends a lot on
the images on top of it. Somthing that's sad in one situation could be
funny in another. So any reference work that suggests some type of
absolute feeling delivered by a peice of music is likely to be of
limited value.

This idea of the context-dependent way we respond to music (and other
elements) is one of the things that really interests me, and I've been
playing with it on my vlog.

For example, in this post of mine, I took what could have been a fairly
saccharine set of images of me and my kids, and contrasted them with
some fairly gruff music. I think the contrast is what makes it work.
(At least, I think it works.) But it's not like everything contrasts:
the music set the tempo for the piece.

One of the things that makes music pleasurable is the way it plays with
your expectations--often by using contrast and contradiction. I talk
about that here:

http://more3.blogspot.com/2005/11/annotation-roll-um-easy.html

On the other hand, in this one there's no contrast, because I wanted to treat the subject without irony:

i'm all about it.i actually just mentioned "synchronicty" in a previous post today.i once belonged to a community of 'synchers'.  we would come up with new recipes like the floyd/oz phenomena.fun stuff.  my best one was called "The Black Emperor's Dark City", a combination of the movie 'Dark City' and the band 'GodSpeed You Black Emperor'.. hell, let me find the page...
shit, the site changed now (this is 3 or 4 years ago)... google cache has it here:http://tinyurl.com/7p6t2i was on this initiative to promote "Synchronicity Art"...
and built a few incarnations of media engines that would randomize music and video together.actually plan to make a new version soon ;-)sullOn 11/22/05,

[videoblogging] Re: Matching music to video?

2005-11-22 Thread Erin Nealey
Freeplay Music does exactly this, unfortunately for video
blogs/podcasts they are not free (I learned the hard way on this). I'm
assuming you're looking for stuff for your videoblog so this wouldn't
help you on that, but in case not, there are some instances where you
can use them (for free). Read over their terms of use carefully... it
can be confusing. Their name is definately misleading!

This thread made me think of the Pink Floyd and Wizard of Oz
