I wondered how the museum would feel about his vlogging in there. I
guess it's a risk to break the policy of your employer, but I feel
kinda sorry for Dalas' getting resigned for it.

He's a dumbass. He didn't read the company policy manual, and he
deserved
 to get fired.

You appear to be shooting from the hip without knowing the details in
this case. Such as - the videos in question have been online for 191
days and the video blogger was fired when he gave his two weeks
notice.

Do you think he was given the ax for his video of the elevator door
opening or the medium, stationary shot of the window?

Who gives a shit. If the museum has a policy and an employee breaks
it, they should definitely be fired. As a museum attendant, part of
his job is to tell people not to use video cameras. He should know
better. He deliberately set a public example completely counter to his
duty at the museum.

This kind of reminds me of the assertion not so long ago that no one
has _really_ been fired for blogging, despite all the blogosphere
lamentations to the contrary. The _real_ reason for someone losing
their job would usually be a violation of existing policy or simply a
lack of common sense, not specifically the act of publishing online
(but rather what was published).

Still, I remember the ripples in the podcast universe when the first
podcaster was canned for his show (he was harassing people in a
church, if I recall correctly), so to some extent it's probably
noteworthy that a videoblog played a part in this fellow's
termination.

Basically, if you mix your hobbies with your bread-and-butter day
job, you can expect trouble.

this was a blogger claiming specific rights that only apply in US law
regarding freedom of speech or press. Apple succeeded in their action
*because* the blog was a publication. All the case demonstrated was
that
a) a blog is a publication
b) but bloggers are *not* journalists
so
c) don't enjoy the same rights as journalists in the united states

this does not affect the status of the blog as a publication :-)

I'll defend free speech expression til the cows come home but this
was stupid.

He worked in a museum. Museums tell people from the time the cross the
door you *shall not* take pictures/video inside of the museum.

It doesn't matter if was after hours, the videos were only of him or
abstracted pieces of the door frame. He took a risk. The risk bit him
in the bum-diddly. He will accept it and move on, I hope to better
things.

It is like the policy many companies have about using e-mail for
personal use. So long as they want you they will turn a blind eye to
your on the job narratives. You get on the hit list and your
narritives will get you pinked slipped and out the door.

Why? Violation of company policy. He may be the first to lose a job
because of video blogging but how much comfort will that be when the
rent is due?

Is there any real proof that they asked him to leave because of his video
blog. He indicates he put in his two week notice and they told him to go
ahead and quit. For all we know he has a lousy work history. Maybe the
museum sends everyone off without two weeks. It's all speculation and
hearsay.

Badda Boom!Jake, that's the response I was waiting to hear. He may just be using it as a means to further his art career. Heather Armstrong (Dooce) got and still gets a lot of publicity for being canned from her job for blogging. Maybe he is trying to use this as a way to try and eat some of that cake?By the way..."go me!"...first post to this group. :) David Howellhttp://www.taoofdavid.com On Aug 31, 2005, at 6:53 PM, Jake Ludington wrote:Why?
