[videoblogging] Windows Movie Maker---New Version

2009-06-05 Thread Jay dedman
I never thought it would happen, but it seems Microsoft is actually updating
Movie Maker, the free video editor that comes with their OS.
Currently, Movie Maker is one shitty program and woe to anyone who tries
editing with it.

- You’d like more transitions, more effects, multiple soundtracks, and
more video editing features like trim and split. As movie makers ourselves,
we’re in the same boat as you are. We want those fun “shatter” transitions
and “warp” effects just as much as you do! We’re definitely working on
improving this and plan to have a range of rich-editing capabilities in the
first official version.

-
- You’d like something resembling a timeline in the product. In the
Movie Maker beta, the storyboard didn’t have the ability to represent time
like a traditional timeline would. We’ve heard you say that you’d like to
be able to drag and drop clips to get them to start and end where you want,
and that you’d like to have music and text that span multiple photos or
video clips. We’ve also heard that you’d like to – at a glance – see which
clips are longer than others, which clips have effects applied, and which
clips have transitions. Now, I don’t want to give too much away just yet
(we still have work to do!), but we’re definitely aware of these
limitations. We’ve developed a new approach that we think will help address
some of the shortcomings of the beta and will scale well from novice to
experienced users without requiring people to switch views in order to get
things done.

I love that, You'd like something resembling a timeline in the product. I
dont mean to rip on Microsoft, but it's a little insane that it;s a big
revelation that a video editing program needs a good timeline as a
workspace.

Anyway...glad they are updating.

This is really hopeful, and I hope they exceed my rock-bottom expectations.
The lack of an acceptable entry-level free video editor for Windows has not
only made YouTube an eyesore, but is a serious barrier to media democracy.

Asking for illegal copies of software in a public forum is not the most
clever thing to do. Buy Windows, go to Windows Update.

[videoblogging] Windows Movie Maker for WMV's

2005-09-09 Thread Bohus Blahut

The adventure continues... :)

The WMV that I created on my editing machine is pretty big for 4
minutes of material, clocking in at 16 megs. I thought that I'd give
Windows Movie Maker a spin to handle the compression to WMV. Here's one
of the things that I don't understand. According to the Help menu on my
in Windows Movie Maker, I've got version 5.1 installed, but the
Microsoft website seems to talk about 2.1 being the newest version.

The problem with the one installed on my machine is that the export
operation has a wizard that I can't seem to shut off. It lists its 768
kpbs as being for LAN instead of for Broadband as mentioned in the Free
Vlog tutorial. No biggie, I figure it's the same thing - right? The
problem is that I have virtually no other options to adjust, including
output size which seems locked at 640 x 480.

I'd really like to get my interface to match up with what I'm seeing
the Free Vlog tutorials so I can get this bad boy done! ;) Any help
out there? Thanks so much.

Right. Same thing.
 The

MovieMaker doesn't have an export options screen other than that very
basic one with the predetermined settings and their corresponding names
(LAN, Pocket PC, Broadband, etc)

It's a very stripped down program. I'd use the Video for Broadband 512K option.-- _ Quirk_ Bullemhead.com

Hmm - then I wonder why in the heck mine is reporting that it's
version 5.1? Or why it's quite different than the version in use on the
Free Vlog tutorial video. Perhaps they were using an older version
that's more flexible? Or is there a version that you can buy that has
more of the necessary options?

MovieMaker doesn't have an export options screen other than that very
basic one with the predetermined settings and their corresponding
names (LAN, Pocket PC, Broadband, etc)

That sure stinks. So I guess that this means that the video already
has to be at the right size before I bring it into Movie Maker? Is
there some better way to be able to take a full-sized AVI file of my
finished video to make it a wmv?

It's a very stripped down program. I'd use the Video for Broadband
 512K option.

I'll give that a spin once I figure out the size issue. Thanks for
getting in touch!

Re: [videoblogging] Windows Movie Maker for WMV's

2005-09-09 Thread Bohus Blahut

On second thought, it looks like perhaps I don't have to monkey
around with Movie Maker after all. Looking at a few other video blogs,
they seem to be getting around the same file sizes as I am for
comparable material. So I think that I'm just going to release this
stuff as is. It's not like it's a big deal or anything - I just wanted
to get the procedure down so that I don't have to think about it from
week to week.

I think that I'll just stick to my creaky old system of encoding
WMV's until the new editing machine comes. Perhaps I'll spend some more
time goofing around with Quicktime MP4's. The WMV turned out looking
a bit better than the Quicktime video, and that just doesn't feel right
somehow. :)

Thanks for your help folks!

If you look below the copyright notice which is below the indication of
version 5.1 you should see Windows Movie Maker v 2.1.2046 or something
similar. It depends somewhat on the version of Windows XP you are using
(Home, Pro, Media Center)

The problem with the one installed on my machine is that the export

Technically you can import other profiles by dropping them into the folder
where output profiles are stored. A bit of a hack, but it works. Another
option for much greater control is to use the free Windows Media Encoder.
