2011-01-04 Thread Richard Hawksworth
I managed a large video post-production company for many years and we
used only Avid and ProTools. Since leaving that post, I've gone all
Mac with Final Cut Studio and Steinberg's Nuendo and I have never
regretted the switch. I would never again invest serious money in a
Windows environment - especially for a creative suite. As a company
Apple is focused on selling hardware - they develop and market all
their software products to support their user base. So, you get
exponentially more software "bang for your buck" with programs like
Final Cut. Final Cut Studio also includes Soundtrack Pro, Color, and
Motion which make it very full-featured.

Re: [Videolib] [Videonews] media editing lab equipment?

2011-01-04 Thread B. Rich
Hi,

I am an independent film producer and (sometimes) college film instructor.  I
have used both Avid and Final Cut on PC and Mac.  Recently, however, I switched
entirely to a Mac-based system with FCP as the main editing suite.  I disagree
with it being a low-end system.  Avid has a lot of reputation as 'industry
standard', but I believe the future direction of the industry itself is reason
enough not to give too much concern to this reputation.  Avid has just recently
caught back up with the program with their new Media Composer.  FCP is overdue
for an update, but works fine as-is with most projects your constituents will
encounter.

Adobe CS suite is a must.  I will also agree with ProTools as a good audio
editing system.

I find Mac now to be much more user-friendly and integrated.  You also have the
advantage of using iMovie and iDVD for less-intensive work or those who don't
want to learn too much but still make some little projects.  Make sure to get
the full FinalCutPro Studio, and as much RAM and CPU horsepower as they make at
the time you make your purchase.  The very best, newest systems are already too
slow (as will always be the case).

Hope this helps.  Have fun!

We use two Avid Media Composer systems in our media lab.  The academic price is
$300 ($500 for a large bundle with other software).  I use Avid primarily
because it is the most common in our TV market and many of the editors in town
also use the product.  I would never claim its better (or worse) than any of
the other products.  Much of the video industry uses Final Cut or Avid.

Re: [Videolib] media editing lab equipment?

2011-01-04 Thread David Folmar
Rudy, I am a MLA student who used to work as an editor and audio engineer,
not to mention all around production person, so maybe I can help. I think
it is very important exactly what kind of media you are talking about and
the level of skill of the users. If you are looking for all around easiest
to use with the best results for the money spent I would suggest just
getting a couple of macs with the full Final Cut Pro, maybe the Adobe suite
if you want to do graphic arts and Pro tools for Audio. Now for Audio some
people swear by CuBase, which is more for Multi Track studio stuff, but if
you are looking for straight Audio files Prot Tools is probably the best
answer. Now IT seems like your intrested in spending a lot of money so
maybe you don't want to go with Final Cut Pro, it is really an incredible
versatile editing tool but is considered pretty low end. I would have to
say that your next choice would probably be an Avid system. Now Avids can
be incredibly expensive or fairly cheap depending on the amount of graphic
sophistication you want. There are other higher end systems than Aivd and
other systems better for live studio camera work, but Avid is pretty much
THE standard in the industry. However to be honest with you, unless your
spending over 60,000 on a suite, there is not real reason to get an Avid and
final cut pro is a very useful and ,much easier to use, in my opinion. Now
if you want to do Hollywood style editing than Avid might be a better
choice, because there is a lot of prejudice against Final Cut as a Low End
system. Anyhow, if you want to do a higher end editing I can't really help
you, but that is my two cents. Good Luck

Well, that's gonna be a tough one. If it were me, I'd contact a big
agri-conglom (ConArgra?)to see if they have PR stuff to give away.

Unlikely you're going to find an independently produced doc that sings the
praises of industrialized agriculture.

Re: [Videolib] Quick Question re: Cataloging Media Sets

2011-01-04 Thread Susan Weber
Absolutely catalogue each part as a separate entity. Apprecaite your cataloguer
who agrees with this.
It is more work, yes, but remind the cataloguers that a DVD or any format cannot
be browsed without
the technology to view it. No Table of contents (like a book) unless a good
cataloguer has done the work to list
the contents, do proper subject analysis, good summary with keywords that are
searchable. All
those things lead to an item that can be found, not just put on a shelf as a
box.
If the item has separate titles, then the item stands alone. The fact that the
vendor put it in a series
is a marketing issue. The contents and description of the item are essential to
that items' use.
If you thought enough of the item to spend money on its purchase, do the right
thing and describe
it fully.

Susan

[Videolib] media editing lab equipment?

2011-01-04 Thread Rudy Leon
Hello all,
I am trying to develop a perfect-world, money-no-object scenario for a pair
of media editing labs. Primarily, this is the goal to shoot for as we begin
to more fully equip our nascent labs, but the scenario will also play into
some request for monies.

Based on your experiences and expertise, what would you include in such a
scenario? I would happily take either types of items or specific models.

collections that are currently found in a variety of fragile and
semi-obsolete formats, including, but not limited to 16 and 35 mm film,
acetate disk, and magnetic tape. The coordinator will also work closely
with the Library's digital preservation program, and will be involved with
the planning and implementation of digital repository technologies, and
will serve as a member of the Library's Visual Resources group, led by the

over 11 million volumes and a total of 23 million items, it ranks highly
among academic libraries in the United States and first among public
university libraries in the world. As the intellectual heart of the
campus, the Library is committed to maintaining the strongest collections
and services possible and engaging in research and development
activities-both of which support the University's mission of teaching,

third largest academic library in the United States and has a collection
of more than ten million volumes. The Library employs approximately 100
library faculty and 300 library staff. For more information, see

Re: [Videolib] Quick Question re: Cataloging Media Sets

2011-01-04 Thread McKenzie, Rue
I typically prefer cataloging titles separately rather than including all in
one record. Each film can be clearly represented in the online catalog on its
own record with summary, possible subjects, etc. All this can go on one record
for a collection, but that can become fairly unwieldy. That said, there are
times, given the number of titles and type of content in the collection, that
it is more important to show them as a collective unit and then a single record
works best in my opinion. I think it also depends upon the perceived use of
the titles/collection. And, sometimes (at least for me) it depends upon how
the collection is packaged. If it is too difficult to physically break up into
individual films, we keep them together on one record, and in one package.

Spoken in true 'wishy-washy', I know, but while I'm a staunch supporter of
consistency, it's hard to make one process fit all items.

And, I'm not receiving duplicate posts, and I am subscribed to both videolib
and videonews.

Happy New Year!

Subject: [Videolib] Quick Question re: Cataloging Media Sets

Hello All, and happy 2011! A quick, one-question survey for you all as you
begin packing for ALA in sunny San Diego:

I am curious to know what your general approach is to cataloging movies which
are packaged in sets, such as the Criterion Eclipse Series; for example, The
First Films of Samuel Fuller, which contains three individual films. Would you
catalog this as:

A) One record with three parts, e.g. The First Films of Samuel Fuller (set,
parts 1-3)

or

B) Three individual records, e.g. The Steel Helmet, The Baron of Arizona, and I
Shot Jesse James?

If you have an extra second and could let me know what kind of library you
represent (academic / public / etc.), I'd appreciate it.

Cheers,

one appearing in my inbox with the subject line "[Videolib] Seeing

help 'diagnose' the problem, which seems to be happening for different

affected. In the meanwhile I will be getting closely acquainted with my
