At Duke University we have a no-loan policy for video lending beyond our
consortium (the Triangle Research Library Network). One summer I opened up
video loaning to ILL and found it took up a heck of a lot of staff time (there
are 2 of us), plus titles that were on loan for two weeks (one week to keep,
one week for shipping to and from institutions) almost never came back in less
than a month. It seems that most everyone's ILL department is understaffed so
it wasn't necessarily a question of patrons not returning items on time but ILL
folks not being able to keep to a tight turnaround. I decided that during the
fall and spring semesters, I couldn't have our material out for that long. I,
and I'm sure many others, do loan on a case-by-case basis when contacted
directly by patrons or library staff.

As a point of curiosity, I wonder do many institutions out there
 maintain a blanket no-lending
policy on ILL of media? Here at the University of Southern California,
 musical cds do go out
on out on ILL but not our video materials. And currently there is no
enthusiasm at all about revising this
policy, but perhaps those institutions which do lend out their dvds on
ILL could make a good case
why institutions like USC should perhaps be more flexible...

 Cheers!

2011-04-21 Thread Nell Chenault
We loan, since we borrow! Our lending is limited to academic institutions.

We review all requests for the following criteria, which we do not loan:

1. Regular or heavy use for classes.
2. Titles for which we are rare on OCLC (5), although we will
negotiate access for scholars.
3. License or purchase limits loaning.

If a title is $200, we ask that the borrower insure delivery/shipping.

We do assume that many will be overdue; we lend for 3 weeks. We
occasionally have to recall items.

Recently, about 5% DVD's are returned with either damage to the case or
cracked disks due to damage in shipping. We have also had 2 damaged
video cases within the last year. This reminds me of the old Samsonite
commercial with apes throwing luggage! We ship in rigid cardboard
wrap, but many institutions return them in flimsy envelopes!

Reminder to ALA guidelines:

VRT Guidelines for the ILL of AV Formats:
 http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/rts/vrt/professionalresources/vrtresources/interlibraryloan.cfm

ILL Packaging and Wrapping:
http://classic-web.archive.org/web/20070608141027/http://www.ala.org/ala/rusa/rusaprotools/referenceguide/interlibraryloan.htm

Despite the problems, we borrow more than we lend, so it is worth while
from our patrons point of view!

We loan videos that do not have a huge in-house demand to Texas
libraries. Sometimes beyond. The pricier ones we tend to keep here. We
rarely buy titles that have serious restrictions unless they are crucial

Re: [Videolib] ILL of Video: Was Hannah Arendt

2011-04-21 Thread John Vallier
For about a year UW Seattle has been loaning videos to libraries in the US and
Canada with the following restrictions: the item must be accessed in the
borrowing library only and for no more than 3 days. When a request comes
through for a title that is unique or rare (out of distribution and owned by
fewer than 5 WCL), we make a backup copy before lending. When the item is
returned we delete the back up copy, usually.

Before we started lending we were concerned about damage and loss, but so far
we have had only one item damaged.

I look forward to having more academic libraries lend their videos via ILL!

Re: [Videolib] ILL of Video: Was Hannah Arendt

2011-04-21 Thread Bergman, Barbara J
I've often seen cost of the video used as a reason for excluding it from ILL.
This is faulty logic because if something happens to the item, the borrowing
library pays. Not the lender who owns the item. This is an important principle
of ILL that I've found that many librarians don't know.

Therefore, it's your own patrons that you need to worry about when it comes to
lost damaged materials.
Or more often, it's the shipping does things in -- We just paid for a book that
we had returned, but was received in 2 pieces (thanks postal service).
