[Videolib] Providence by Alain Resnais

2012-11-14 Thread Brian W Boling
Does anybody know of upcoming plans to release Alain Resnais' 1977 film *
Providence* on DVD?

I've not been able to find a legitimate copy of a good transfer, except for
pricey used VHS copies in questionable condition.

Thanks,

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues
relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control,
preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and
related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective
working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication
between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and
distributors.

Brian,
I don't know anything about this title specifically and given that it is
major work by a major director there is some hope it could come out on DVD
in the future but in general there are going to be tens of thousands of
titles released on VHS that are not out on DVD and many out on DVD that
were never out on VHS. Foreign films as I have mentioned probably have by
far the lowest percentage since most only had 7 to 10 year contracts in the
first place.

It is probably going to get worse as some films are skipping DVD completely
to go say HULU or Netflix.

I wish you luck and this film is more likely to make it than many others.

A little off topicŠ but I can't help but comment.

While Vincent Canby and Roger Ebert didn't care for the film version of
1776, I have always loved the musical. It is, after all, a musical, not
a documentary. And it won several major Tony and Drama Desk awards.

I've always found the music quite engaging, from the epistolary duet
between Adams and his wife, to the implication of the northern colonies in
the slave trade (Molasses to Rum), an amazing anti-war song Momma Look
Sharp (it was the late 1960s) and the anthem of the conservatives Cool
Considerate MenŠ

It was unfortunate that Cool Considerate Men was cut from the film but I
understand it has been restored in later releases.
