Subject: [Videolib] Public Librarians... Hoopla??

Hello Collective Wisdom,
I am curious to see if any of the public librarians reading this have
Midwest Tapes' Hoopla...? Does anyone have any experience with it or
know of anyone who has it? Our library is thinking about jumping on,
but I just wanted to know if anyone can comment on it. How well does it
work, pluses and minuses, etc. Thanks in advance for your help.
Feel free to contact me off list.

Thanks,
Julie

Is there a logistical reason you can't have more multi-system players?
They are not expensive and while the Jennings films were government
produced so there might be a sliver of chance the BBC could allow to
transfer to NTSC this would not be the case with privately owned material
which is 99% of what is out there.

Re: [Videolib] Community check out of media in Academic Library

2013-08-12 Thread Susan Weber
When we acquire an item with restrictions, such as "site license" or only
users from the purchasing organization (students, faculty, staff) we make
a note in the MARC record and we put a label on the box, with the type
of restriction. That way, the circulation staff should see the label at
checkout.
We use the locking cases, so there has to be staff handling of the case to
remove the lock on the box.
We also limit the borrowing period or borrower if an item is over $150.
So the CRM, Starthrower and other costly items can not be loaned at all
to external borrowers.

[Videolib] Multi-region disc playing

2013-08-12 Thread Deg Farrelly
VLC Media Player is a free (shareware) application that runs on a
computer, and permits playback using the computer's DVD drive of a wide
variety of formats.

I rarely use it, but have used it to play discs from other regions.

It is a reasonable alternative to multi-region players.

Re: [Videolib] more about Criterion Pictures USA streaming

2013-08-12 Thread Jessica Rosner
The short version is that studios and major rights holders are NEVER going
to allow any person or institution permission to digitize and stream their
own. Keep in mind they will only allow the streaming on a very limited term
basis so it is not anything that will be up for the long term. I suspect
Criterion USA will move more towards the Swank model which I believe is set
up to stream licensed titles directly.
