We, too, subscribe to the Film Movement, and while we haven't ever had much
luck with film programs, the DVDs do circulate well.

Hi. We've been subscribing for several years. Unfortunately, at this point we
aren't using the titles for any programs since film programs just don't work at
our location at this point. We're hoping in the new building that will be
different (ha!). However, the films are fairly popular. They have a nice,
slow, steady circulation. They aren't going out like the latest summer
blockbuster, but they don't just sit on the shelves and collect dust. HTH.

Re: [Videolib] Film Movement from Recorded Books

2013-08-13 Thread Michael May
With the Recorded Books subscription, in 2010 my library was informed that the
one-time PPR licenses could not be used during the first four months after DVD
arrival dates in order to "accommodate cinemas participating in the increasing
number of theatrical releases." I haven't heard that this policy has changed
since.

Otherwise, I agree with Becky below. We've subscribed for several years and
have shown one or two titles. The selections are very interesting and circulate
steadily.

[Videolib] Searchin for Almanya with English subtitles

2013-08-13 Thread Hooper, Lisa K
Greetings everyone,

I'm on the hunt for the German Film Almanya: Wilkommen in Deutschland (dir.
Samdereli). On amazon I can only clearly find copies with either Italian or
Turkish subtitles and I'm looking for English. There is a record for it in OCLC
and through the Goethe-Institut film
catalog indicating that there is
copy with English subtitles. But, 1. I cannot tell if the amazon options are
the same as this Goethe-Institut item, and 2. I can't seem to find it in the
Goethe-Institut shop - has anyone else been able to confirm the first point or
figured out how to purchase this form of film from the Goethe-Institut?

Thanks in advance.

[Videolib] Institutional purchasing using Paypal, your wishlist to PP top management

2013-08-13 Thread Suzanne Harle
Hi Folks,
One of my friends works in marketing at Paypal (Senior Executive). I
have been invited down to HQ on Thursday to meet other Senior
Executives to learn from customers how they can make Paypal a more
valuable service. (likes and dislikes and wishlists).

Paypal seems to be the payment gateway for many publishers/film
producers since usually the functionality is built into popular
ecommerce platforms. But I know its not a favorite choice among
educational media buyers, why is that so?

Now is your chance to voice your opinion. Is it reporting? (or lack
there of, and explain how it could be better) Something else?

I would like to compile a list of grievances and wishlist items by the
evening of Aug 14th (tomorrow) I just thought of this so sorry for the
short notice.

Please contact me off list at suza...@greenplanetfilms.org.

I will compile a list to bring with me and then create a document of
their responses for anyone interested (will post on list when its
available for download).
Thank you!

2013-08-13 Thread Patti Ruocco
Hi,

We've also subscribed to Film Movement for many years and use the PPR to show
selected films to our film discussion group at the library. Both the group and
individual patron film fans have told me how much they enjoy and are impressed
by the Film Movement films. For the film discussion group it's helped fill the
niche for exploring independent films, documentaries and international films.

Hi. We've subscribed for a number of years. The films have been used for both
Library series and student organization screenings (with the one-time PPR per
title). There has never been a need to request additional PPR for multiple
group showings. Also, I was recently reviewing usage, and was quite pleasantly
surprised at the number of individual circulations of these films as well.

We do try to routinely put them on our "New Shelf" each month with other DVDs,
and typically add them as new items on our media libguide. I think they
definitely add to the diversity of the collection.

Hi Rue and Barb,

I know videolib isn't the place to advertise, but I just wanted to let you know
that in addition to our product from Recorded Books, we also offer a slightly
different subscription fulfilled by us directly. The pricepoint is higher, but
we offer PPR valid for the life of the DVD (with DRL also available for
academic libraries), rather than one-time public performance licenses only.
Feel free to get in touch with me off-list for more info.

However you subscribe, it's great to hear the feedback!

I have created a lib guide that lists everything we have licensed, and
has a separate list of just Swank titles. It is a lot of work to
maintain.
http://guides.lib.umich.edu/content.php?pid=397747&sid=3257199

We also include the note "U. Michigan streaming rights obtained." in
the online catalog for any title licensed for 5 years or more.
All of the Alexander Street Press titles also have direct links in the
online catalog records.

I haven't actually seen a license contract from them yet. I suggest
you contact CPUSA rep Brian Block with the question.

I would simply assign each of the films you are hosting a unique
assession number (DS-1, for digital stream) and them search the catalog
by that assession number.

For me the issue is discovery. How do faculty members learn that we
*have* access to a particular streamed film if it’s not hosted at a
known site? IOW, if someone wants to look at what we’ve got available
from Swank’s Digital Campus, they can just go log in there and peruse
the available content. Same thing with MEF’s streamed titles we’ve
signed on for * they can go to the Kanopy site or even find them in our
OPAC, since, because MEF uses IP recognition and not login, we’ve added
them there.

But for individual files housed on the institution’s own server, how do
people find out they’re there?

Clearly, we’re new to this mechanism.

The short version is that studios and major rights holders are NEVER going to
allow any person or institution permission to digitize and stream their own.
Keep in mind they will only allow the streaming on a very limited term basis so
it is not anything that will be up for the long term. I suspect Criterion USA
will move more towards the Swank model which I believe is set up to stream
licensed titles directly.
