I have a few colleagues trying to track down some PPR for television. The
works we're looking for are:

Doctor Who
Sharknado

The librarian looking at Doctor Who has tried the BBC and they have been

Thanks!

In general BBC is VERY, VERY protective of any public shows of Dr. Who. It
may well be difficult to impossible to license. As a side note they are
somewhat preoccupied with a huge world wide event on 11/23 to celebrate the
50th Anniversary which may explain delay in responding.

Good luck and please report back on what happens.

[Videolib] Exercise DVDs for Library Programs?

Can anyone suggest places I might look for exercise programs on DVD that could
be used for library programming (i.e., with PPR)?  We have a group that has
been participating in a Wii Zumba program at the library for a while and they

have in our collection are for home use only.  Any suggestions?

[Videolib] Trying to get DVD copy of Passion for Life

Hi all,

Does anyone know if a DVD copy of the French film on teaching, A Passion

think it's even officially in distribution anymore, but I'm only seeing
VHS copies anyway. If no DVD is available, does anyone know who to
contact for permission to make a DVD copy from a VHS? I see Brandon Films
and Water Bearer Films attached to it, and I think I've seen Brandon
Films as the copyright holder, but have no contact info.

Any other suggestion welcome.

Thanks!

I'd suggest a BBC-WGBH coproduction, the series The Machine that Changed the

It is very extensive, and if you look at the summaries, you may find exactly
what you need.
We only have it on VHS. I haven't checked to see if it's avail on DVD.

Re: [Videolib] Trying to get DVD copy of Passion for Life

2013-10-29 Thread Jessica Rosner
Sadly this falls right into the issue I was posting about yesterday, the
overwhelming majority of non US films not being in distribution in the US.
Brandon films is long gone and even if they ever had legit rights they
would be expired. I suspect Water Bearer may have distributed as a Public
Domain title which it would have been till roughly 1995 when the US signed
the GATT Treaty. Short version is that problems with US copyright laws left
almost all non American films released in the US before 1960 and many more
till 1976 unprotected and GATT restored their copyright.

You will need to find the rights holder in France. It is listed some places
at UGC but your best clue may be the company that has it out on DVD in
France. I will try to get you at UGC contact.

However realistically even if you found them, there is very little chance
they would agree to sell a copy to an American library where one assumes
they would prefer a distribution deal. You could use the French copy but I
don't think it has English titles.

Keep in mind while their are exceptions ( like many Janus titles) most
foreign films are acquired for distribution in the US on contracts
averaging between 7-10 years and many times one party or the other is not
willing to renew (or out of business) at the end of this time. which means
that only are the vast number of films that were never released in the US
not available, but so are what I believer are tens of thousands that were
at some point. When the contracts expire all rights revert back to rights
holder and so many of these films just fall through the cracks.

Good Luck

Product Reviews

Known to English-speaking audiences as Day for Night, La nuit am ricaine was
director Fran ois Truffaut's loving and humorous tribute to the communal
insanity of making a movie. The film details the making of a family drama
called Meet Pamela about the tragedy that follows when a young French man
introduces his parents to his new British wife. Truffaut gently satirizes
his own films with Meet Pamela's overwrought storyline, but the real focus
is on the chaos behind the scenes. One of the central actresses is
continually drunk due to family problems, while the other is prone to
emotional instability, and the male lead (Truffaut regular Jean-Pierre
Leaud) starts to act erratically when his intermittent romance with the
fickle script girl begins to fail. In addition to all this personal drama,
the film is besieged by technical problems, from difficult tracking shots to
stubborn animal actors. The inspiration for future satires of movie-making
from Living in Oblivion to Irma Vep, La nuit am ricaine was considered
slight by some critics in comparison to earlier Truffaut masterworks, but it
went on to win the 1973 Oscar for Best Foreign Film. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi

Um that is the standard US version it may have French TITLES but it is
DUBBED in English so that is not what Debra is looking for.

I saw on the web some reference to a French copy with English titles

OOPS just checked with WB and they say the DVD IS in French with titles
UNLESS as happens in parts of the film the characters are SPEAKING in
English. Amazon is WRONG.

It used to be really hard to see a 35mm print that was not dubbed.

sorry for the faulty intel.

The leading lady is recovering from a nervous breakdown, another

finish before the insurance lapses and a cat can't hit its mark. Is this
any way to make a film? FRANCOIS TRUFFAUT's sly, humorous Oscar-winning

loves movies. JACQUELINE BISSET, JEAN-PIERRE AUMONT, VALENTINA CORTESE,
 NATHALIE BAYE and Truffaut star.

 Product Reviews

Known to English-speaking audiences as Day for Night, La nuit am ricaine
was director Fran ois Truffaut's loving and humorous tribute to the
communal insanity of making a movie. The film details the making of a
family drama called Meet Pamela about the tragedy that follows when a
young French man introduces his parents to his new British wife. Truffaut
gently satirizes his own films with Meet Pamela's overwrought storyline,
but the real focus is on the chaos behind the scenes. One of the central
actresses is continually drunk due to family problems, while the other is
prone to emotional instability, and the male lead (Truffaut regular
Jean-Pierre Leaud) starts to act erratically when his intermittent romance
with the fickle script girl begins to fail. In addition to all this
personal drama, the film is besieged by technical problems, from difficult
tracking shots to stubborn animal actors. The inspiration for future
satires of movie-making from Living in Oblivion to Irma Vep, La nuit am
ricaine was considered slight by some critics in comparison to earlier
Truffaut masterworks, but it went on to win the 1973 Oscar for Best Foreign
 Film. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi
