Re: [Videolib] videolib Digest, Vol 88, Issue 25
Hi Kim, We frequently get requests for versions of our films with closed captions. Because we do not have closed captions for all of our older titles, we are happy to offer an exchange - provide us with the closed captioning file and we will re-author the DVD. That way, we can also make the closed caption version available to other schools. And I would gladly permit keeping it in the archive for future use if needed. But I wouldn't like the dupe copy put out in the general collection. One thing I have to say is that whether it was the Americans with Disabilities Act and the increased need or just new technology, the cost of adding SDH titles has dropped so significantly (and the knowledge that Itunes and Amazon will usually require them) that for at least the feature of a DVD, we've been able to afford it for most of our new releases these days. Is that the case for most releases by distributors? I believe Fair Use can also be employed for this purpose. Either way, we did not seek permission from the copyright holder, we relied on exception in the law. Now there are two copies of the film ? the original library copy and this new CC copy. How should this second CC copy be managed? ODA wants the library to manage access, but I don?t think legally we can add it to the circulating collection. What are the legalities or best practices for managing these kinds of items? Thank you! Or even being conversational with them just once. Edith Kramer of the Pacific Film Archive had a technique of just talking for as long as it took to get the price she needed. She was a great conversationalist AND she knew that sooner or later the booker would be anxious to get to other bookings. Then again, there's only one Edith. [Videolib] Films on contemplative science, mediation, or yoga
Matt, Are you interested in these practices in other countries? The Lover and the Beloved and The One and the Many are films by anthropologist Andy Lawrence about the Nath Yogis of Northern India. The former is about the spiritual quest of an indian school teacher and the latter is the story of his guru and a deeper look at Tantric beliefs. [Videolib] FIlms about nurses
Here are some interesting examples: A Calling to Care A Calling to Care is the inspiring story of 55 year-old Grace Stanley, a Canadian nurse who left her home and prestigious career behind to answer a calling halfway around the world in Karachi, Pakistan. And if films about midwives would be considered: All My Babies: A Midwife' Own Story This is a training film about midwifery which transcends the form. It was selected by the Library of Congress for placement on the National Film Registry in 2002 as a culturally, historically and artistically significant work. All My Babies was written, produced and directed by Stoney in collaboration with the featured midwife, Mrs. Mary Francis Hill Coley, as well as with local public health doctors and nurses. Recorded on location in Albany, Georgia, it shows the preparation for and home delivery of healthy babies in both relatively good and bad rural conditions among African American families at that time. The film is not only a profound portrait of Miss Mary as she was affectionately and respectfully known, but also is a documentary record of the actual living conditions of her patients.
