Re: [Videolib] videolib Digest, Vol 88, Issue 25

2015-03-26 Thread Alice Apley
Hi Kim,

We frequently get requests for versions of our films with closed captions.
Because we do not have closed captions for all of our older titles, we are
happy to offer an exchange - provide us with the closed captioning file and we
will re-author the DVD. That way, we can also make the closed caption version
available to other schools.

Best,
Alice

I don't know the legality of making them without permission from the
distributor but I can say that we have never refused a request as long as
the institution has purchased a copy (home video or institutional) of the
Milestone DVD or Blu-ray legally from us or wherever. And I would gladly
permit keeping it in the archive for future use if needed. But I wouldn't
like the dupe copy put out in the general collection.

One thing I have to say is that whether it was the Americans with
Disabilities Act and the increased need or just new technology, the cost of
adding SDH titles has dropped so significantly (and the knowledge that
Itunes and Amazon will usually require them) that for at least the feature
of a DVD, we've been able to afford it for most of our new releases these
 days.

Is that the case for most releases by distributors?

We do not keep the captioned copies in the library after the semester
they are requested because of the situation you mentioned. We send them

cases the captioned copy will never be used again but that's okay because
our primary concern is access to the current student.

I?ve been working with my Office of Disability Accommodation for the past

Recently we paid for had a handful of films to be sent out for captioning
by a vendor. I don?t the specifics, but ODA relied on Americans with
Disabilities Act to justify making the copy. I believe Fair Use can also be
employed for this purpose. Either way, we did not seek permission from the
copyright holder, we relied on exception in the law.

Now there are two copies of the film ? the original library copy and this
new CC copy. How should this second CC copy be managed? ODA wants the
library to manage access, but I don?t think legally we can add it to the
circulating collection. What are the legalities or best practices for
 managing these kinds of items?

Thank all, and do I have the correct info for who to contact?
I was confused about who to contact for: Paradise Now and Unveiled.
Also, our art house Athena Cinema, works with Tri-State Theatre Service, so
they might be able to get lower prices as well.

 Thanks everyone,

 Dear Lorraine,

If it's a one-time use, often a negotiation with the distributor will provide
a lower rental fee -- especially if you talk with them on a continued basis.
Or even being conversational with them just once.

Edith Kramer of the Pacific Film Archive had a technique of just talking for
as long as it took to get the price she needed. She was a great
conversationalist AND she knew that sooner or later the booker would be
anxious to get to other bookings. Then again, there's only one Edith.

[Videolib] Films on contemplative science, mediation, or yoga

2013-10-25 Thread Alice Apley
Matt,

Are you interested in these practices in other countries? The Lover and the
Beloved and The One and the Many are films by anthropologist Andy Lawrence
about the Nath Yogis of Northern India. The former is about the spiritual
quest of an indian school teacher and the latter is the story of his guru and a
deeper look at Tantric beliefs.

[Videolib] FIlms about nurses

2013-01-02 Thread Alice Apley
Here are some interesting examples:

A Calling to Care
A Calling to Care is the inspiring story of 55 year-old Grace Stanley, a
Canadian nurse who left her home and prestigious career behind to answer a
calling halfway around the world in Karachi, Pakistan.

And if films about midwives would be considered:

All My Babies: A Midwife' Own Story
This is a training film about midwifery which transcends the form. It was
selected by the Library of Congress for placement on the National Film Registry
in 2002 as a culturally, historically and artistically significant work.

All My Babies was written, produced and directed by Stoney in collaboration
with the featured midwife, Mrs. Mary Francis Hill Coley, as well as with local
public health doctors and nurses. Recorded on location in Albany, Georgia, it
shows the preparation for and home delivery of healthy babies in both
relatively good and bad rural conditions among African American families at
that time. The film is not only a profound portrait of Miss Mary as she was
affectionately and respectfully known, but also is a documentary record of the
actual living conditions of her patients.

Anyone have suggestions for films that portray nurses, both good and bad? A
faculty member is looking for films for undergraduate nursing students to
compare and contrast core values, professionalism, and comportment with
representations of nurses/nursing in film media. I think she's interested
in both feature films and documentaries. Your help is greatly appreciated.
I'd be happy to post the resulting list if anyone's interested. THANKS.
