Our VHS is worn out. But new VHS tapes are available on Amazon.
Amazon also has a DVD, but clearly appears to be bootleg.

Swank Digital Campus has it for streaming. We do not need PPR.

Re: [Videolib] documentary films on radical social movements

2014-01-24 Thread Benjamin Crossley-Marra

Hello Matthew,

Zeitgeist Films has a number of documentaries that might fit your
proverbial bill:

I'd HIGHLY recommend our latest doc: Let the Fire Burn:

"On May 13, 1985, a longtime feud between the city of Philadelphia and
controversial radical urban group MOVE came to a deadly climax. By
order of local authorities, police dropped military-grade explosives
onto a MOVE-occupied rowhouse. TV cameras captured the conflagration
that quickly escalated—and resulted in the tragic deaths of eleven
people (including five children) and the destruction of 61 homes."

https://zeitgeistfilms.com/film.php?directoryname=letthefireburn

Also: !Women, Art, Revolution:

"An entertaining and revelatory “secret history” of Feminist Art, !
Women Art Revolution deftly illuminates this under-explored movement
through conversations, observations, archival footage and works of
visionary artists, historians, curators and critics."

More info:
https://zeitgeistfilms.com/film.php?directoryname=womenartrevolution

Paul Goodman Changed My Life:

"Paul Goodman Changed My Life immerses you in an era of high intellect
(that heady, cocktail-glass juncture that Mad Men has so effectively
exploited) when New York was peaking culturally and artistically; when
ideas, and the people who propounded them, seemed to punch in at a
higher weight class than they do now."

More info:
https://zeitgeistfilms.com/film.php?directoryname=paulgoodman

Trouble the Water:

"Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival,
this astonishingly powerful documentary is at once horrifying and
exhilarating. Directed and produced by Fahrenheit 9/11 and Bowling for
Columbine producers Tia Lessin and Carl Deal, Trouble the Water takes
you inside Hurricane Katrina in a way never before seen on screen. The
film opens the day before the storm makes landfall—just blocks away
from the French Quarter but far from the New Orleans that most
tourists knew."

Hope this helps!!!

Re: [Videolib] DVD Requiem for a Dream: Director's Cut

2012-03-23 Thread Benjamin Crossley-Marra

H,

Well Requiem for a Dream starts out with a fake infomercial - it's
part of the plot.

It's odd that you can't skip to the next chapter though - is this what
is occurring? Also - I know some DVDs do not have a "Play" function
per say but you just play it from the first chapter.

Some older DVDs have that and Requiem for a Dream was coming out right
when the first DVDs were hitting the shelves.

Best of luck!

Re: [Videolib] Lifetime Streaming Rights

2012-03-16 Thread Benjamin Crossley-Marra
Elizabeth, I'm sorry you know I love Kino and appreciate all that you
do but we simply disagree on this (relatively small) issue.

What you just said implies that we are only in the business of
generating immediate profit for rights holders regardless of the
future implications or even our contractual obligations. I can't
reconcile that.

Zeitgeist is not exclusively in the business of selling to educational
institutions and it's not my job to offer rights that we don't have
simply because a customer would like that option available. We sell
our films on iTUNES for personal use, not educational exhibition. It's
a completely different section in the contract.

All kinds of digital streaming sites - Netflix, Amazon, etc. work just
fine with termination dates. I don't see why libraries can't do the
same AT LEAST until we work out the language in our contracts that
allows us to do this with full disclosure to the rights holders.

If we were just an educational company buying lifetime rights would be
a different story. But the pedigree and universality of films that
both Zeitgeist and Kino distribute, in my opinion, require careful
consideration about which rights we attach to our packages in
accordance with our contracts with sales agents.

But I have no doubt you've given this careful consideration on your
end and have come to your decision as I have come to mine and we will
just have to see what the future holds.

I'd very much like to get a group of distributors to talk about this
further, both educational and theatrical, but probably off the
listserv! :)

archive a digital file on their server rather than the DVD on a

And digital formats change all the time. 3 years ago Flash was the

I liked Bob's analogy that a digital site license is not analogous

If a distributor sold broadcast rights in perpetuity that would lock

not be right. The difference is you are selling a right, not a thing.

iTunes does not place a time limitation on my music downloads of
major recording artists. I don't think video distributors are
required to set an arbitrary termination date on the use of a
particular digital file either. Of course if the producer's
agreement prohibits lifetime sales then Film Ideas would not grant

I know we have disagreed on this and I have run this by many
companies

that distribute foreign film in particular and all I have spoken do
not believe their contracts permit the sale of lifetime streaming if
they for instance have the right to sell downloads to individuals for
the fixed period on the contract. I believe the closer comparison is
to a TV sale. Most contracts don't permit a distributor to make a
sale
for a cable, Internet or other broadcast form to that would permit
the

companies broadcast or download the film forever. The rights are
limited by the term of the contract. More specifically I have
directly

asked several European companies about lifetime streaming rights and
they refused and some of these are the same companies Kino/Lorber has
films from. I feel very strongly that if these rights were allowed
they should be explicitly included in a contract because you are not
selling a physical item like a print or a VHS but rights that can
literally never expire in a format that can be used forever.

Since again I have been explicitly told by several major overseas
rights holders that their contract do not include this I think it
would be unfair to have institutions in the middle. Frankly there
have

in fact been a number of cases in which
after a contract expired a rights holder told an institution that a
distributor had no rights to sell a particular item with lifetime PPR
and they insisted that showings be cancelled and the film never
shown.

It is not common because most large overseas companies have little
knowledge or interest in such things but again this should be between
distributors and rights holders. Obviously if you believe your
contracts cover this you should make sure the rights holders are
informed and agree to this.

digital site rights and the answer is "no" for the very reasons
Jessica mentioned.

We have not negotiated lifetime rights for any of our titles and
therefore cannot offer lifetime rights, streaming or otherwise to
buyers.

We DO sell DVDs with public performance rights and those rights are
good for the life of the disc. But we feel comfortable giving these
out as the material will eventually deteriorate and we are not
guaranteeing anything in perpetuity.

I'm not going to judge or try to expose other companies who operate in
a similar manner to Zeitgeist (distributing feature theatrical films)
that are attempting to sell these rights - but as per Jessica's note I
would be a little wary.

If they negotiate contracts in a similar manner to us than there is
absolutely nothing in these contracts stating that we/they can sell
perpetual streaming or digital site licenses to institutions as of
yet. I imagine most rights holders would balk at reading something
like that in a contract but then again, we've also never attempted to
put that in. Maybe other companies have.

If and when we DO put something like that in our contract for one of
our titles I will advertise as much.

many, but not all of their silent films, it will rarely work when
major or even minor rights holders outside the US (as well as ones in
the US) are involved. Before buying anything with lifetime rights I
would make sure the seller certifies that have a contract with the
rights holder that specifically allows them to do it. You do not want
a rights holder coming back and telling that the company was not
entitled to sell those rights. I believe sometimes this is a matter of
interpretation, but I feel strongly that unless a rights holder
specifically agrees to such sales by contract, bad things can happen
in the future. Any rights holder with sense would agree, but foreign
rights holder in particular seem allergic to the concept of lifetime
rights. I think Facets has some special relationships with particular
filmmakers, but it is a problem for the vast majority of feature films
not owned by studios ( they clearly have rights on most of their
titles but I don't see them offering lifetime streaming right any time
soon).

I don't mean to go too "inside baseball" on everyone but since this is
basically a very new type of rights not previously included in
existing contracts, I would just be careful to make sure there is
written agreement ( even if it is just an email) between rights
holders and distributors to sell lifetime rights.

I am sure distributors are trying to get lifetime streaming rights but
other than studios and directors I just don't see a lot of rights
holders agreeing. It is likely easier with non fiction films or at
least that has been my experience so far.

It is going to be a bumpy ride as rights, new distribution methods
and copyright laws
are posing a lot of new questions and opportunities.

Hi Jennifer,

The film is absolutely not legitimately distributed through the sites that
you mentioned.

I know that it appears on youtube from time to time but we do try to take it
down as fast as possible, I also know we have a clip on megavideo but I was
unaware and unable to access a full version of the film on that site, but
maybe you have to be a member.

It's very hard for me to track and take down all illegal streams for
Zeitgeist but I do try my best. I know Examined Life is one title that gets
thrown up a lot.

But thank you for pointing this out to me and I will try my best to get this
down any conceivable way I can.

You also might want to inform the instructor that it is fairly unethical and
(ironically) against the content of the film she is having her students
watch, to suggest that they go to a legally questionable uploading site for
their coursework.

[Videolib] Zeitgeist Films Announces: The Sun Behind the Clouds

2010-07-27 Thread Benjamin Crossley-Marra
Zeitgeist Films proudly announces it's latest title available for
Institutional and Educational Purposes:

THE SUN BEHIND THE CLOUDS: A film by Ritu Sarin and Tenzing Sonam

³A provocative and potent look at The Dalai Lama¹s ceaseless struggle for
justice and recognition for the Tibetan people, The Sun Behind the Clouds
focuses on the pivotal and particularly tumultuous events of 2008. From
Buddhist monks' protests in Lhasa on the 50th anniversary of the Chinese
invasion and the four-month march of exiled Tibetans through India to the
Tibetan border, to the Beijing Olympics and the raucous talks the between
the Dalai Lama¹s representatives and the Chinese government, the film
uncovers the growing rifts between younger Tibetans and their most respected
spiritual leader.²

Visit the website here:
http://www.zeitgeistfilms.com/thesunbehindtheclouds/

Order the film here:
http://www.zeitgeistfilms.com/film.php?directoryname=sunbehindtheclouds&mode

Praise for the film:

³This film not only shows the situation in Tibet, the confrontation between
the police and monks, the confrontation between the police and the public,
but it also shows what is happening in the hearts of the Tibetan people.²
Vaclav Havel, former president of the Czech Republic, while presenting the
film with the Vaclav Havel award at the One World Film Festival in Prague

³This is a riveting film, unlike any other one is likely to see on Tibet
anytime soon. It¹s a film from the inside, one that explores the real,
wrenching debates going on within the Tibetan community over the policies
that the Dalai Lama has been advocating, policies which have seemingly had
no effect on Chinese rule in Tibet.² Elliot Sperling, Professor, Central
Eurasian Studies, Indiana University

³From the director of the Oscar-nominated My Country, My Country, The Oath

Same for Zeitgeist although we do sell PPR DVDs to Action! library media

Re: [Videolib] Pricing of DVDS (was Filmmakers are not your enemies)

2010-05-13 Thread Benjamin Crossley-Marra
At Zeitgeist we try (as best we can) to find a middle ground.

It's $139 for public schools and libraries (and other special cases) and
$195 for private institutions.

Plus, they come with BOTH a 3-year streaming license and PPR.

I know that's still not doable for some librarians and I understand.

But because we distribute a lot of activist films, and most of them need to
recoup their initial investments, I try my best to sell them at that price.

Also, I offer FREE replacements on all of Zeitgeist DVDs that are damaged.
Ask anybody.

[Videolib] Zeitgeist Films Announces: Harlan: In the Shadow of Jew Suss

2010-05-12 Thread Benjamin Crossley-Marra
Zeitgeist Films proudly announces it's latest title available for
Institutional and Educational Purposes:

HARLAN: IN THE SHADOW OF JEW SUSS

"Though almost forgotten today, Veit Harlan was one of Nazi Germany¹s most
notorious filmmakers. Millions all across occupied Europe saw his films, the
most perfidious of which was the treacherous anti-Semitic propaganda film
Jew Süss‹required viewing for all SS members. An unrepentant and blindly
obsessive craftsman, no figure‹save for Leni Riefenstahl‹is as closely
associated with the cinema of the Holocaust years as that of Joseph
Goebbels¹ top director."

Re: [Videolib] Differential pricing on Amazon

2010-02-10 Thread Benjamin Crossley-Marra
It's funny, I just rejected an offer from Amazon to do something similar.

Not only does it defeat the purpose of having a non-theatrical relationship
with the consumer it's also giving a vendor like Amazon the right to sell
and discount PPR which is something I'm not comfortable with at all.

But are you telling me that this distributor on Amazon is not even
announcing that these titles come with PPR? They're just blatantly telling
organizations that this is the price the have to buy it at? As long as I'm
snowed in my office I have to say that's crap.

Just FYI I've never coerced a teacher or librarian into saying they NEED to
buy PPR with our DVDs. But have explained that if student groups would like
to take it out and hold their own screenings with our films then it's
definitely a good idea! (I know different libraries have radically different
policies on this) I had a teacher come to me yesterday telling me her
librarian said she needed a public license to show Manufactured Landscapes
in her classroom as part of her course. I told her to tell the librarian to
review the DMCA.

I don't think it's wrong for us to sell DVDs a two different prices. A lot
of non-library groups I sell to like churches, YMCAs, JCCs, non-profits,
community groups etc. like the editions with PPR because then they don't
have to come back to me every time they want to put on a free public
screening. I often even adjust the PPR and price according to what the group
needs.

But that's never something Amazon should get involved in.

Yes at one point in time we had Where Is the Friend's Home, And Life Goes
On, and Close-Up but the prints (I'm 90% sure) went back to Mongrel (the
Canadian company) after we lost them.

All we have now is 10 and 10 on 10. Very sad :(
