Re: [Videolib] Question regarding Spanish language films in streaming format

2015-06-23 Thread Daniela Bajar
Dear Lisa,

This is a fantastic list of films. Although we include Tambien La Lluvia (Even
the Rain) in our educational program Spanish Film Club
(www.spanishfilmclub.com), we do not have the streaming rights. You may want to
check with the US distributor, Vitagraph.

However, we do specialize in Ibero American Cinema and have many films
available in case your Professor is open to alternative titles. Most of our
titles will be available for streaming at Alexander Press in September under
the category “New Wave of Ibero American Cinema” and some others will be
available for streaming on Kanopy.

In addition to our current titles (available at www.pragda.com/films), we will
be launching Cidade de Deus: 10 Anos Depois (City of God: 10 Years Later) and O
Dia que Durou 21 Anos (The Day that Lasted 21 Years) in September.

Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Daniela

and Class Issues

“Blanco's passionate portrayal of Yuma make this female Rocky fresh and
appealing.” - MoMA

“She often evokes Fellini’s early-sixties neorealist work, Nights of
Cabiria in particular.” - Rubén Rosario, SUN POST WEEKLY

LA YUMA
A film by Florence Jaugey
Nicaragua, Spain, Mexico, France / 2011 / 91 min / Narrative / Spanish with
English subtitles
Nicaragua’s first full-length feature in 20 years, La Yuma tells the story
of a young woman who dreams of transcending her bleak life in the slums of
Managua by becoming a boxer. Looking beyond the meager possibilities that
seem available to her (and ignoring the advice of her gang-member friends),
she finds solace and hope in her training and falls in love with a
middle-class journalism student. With an extraordinary performance by Alma
Blanco as Yuma, the strength, astuteness and determination of the main
character reflect the feelings of a population that faces adversity and
inequality. Jaugey’s film allows us the rare opportunity to get a glimpse
of life in this Central American country where gender and class inequality
are an everyday challenge.

“Iria Gomez Conchiero’s engaging and impressively structured heist movie is
a cinematic pleasure, blending the crime genre with slacker youth and

“Immensely likable…a wealth of organic pleasures…it announces debut
director-writer Iria Gomez Conchiero as a talent worth tracking.” - VARIETY

THE CINEMA HOLD UP (ASALTO AL CINE)
A film by Iria Gómez Concheiro
Mexico / 2011 / 124 min / Narrative / Spanish with English subtitles
First-time feature director Iria Gómez Concheiro draws pitch-perfect
performances from the talented ensemble cast and registers a strong and
original voice in Mexican cinema. Negus, Chale, Sapo, and Chata are
teenagers who grew up in the same rundown district of Mexico City. They
spend their days listening to hip-hop, smoking marijuana and fantasizing
about the opposite sex. One day they have the bright idea of robbing a
movie theater, jeopardizing the one sure thing they have in life – their
friendship. An explosive, entertaining dramatic comedy, The Cinema Hold Up
is a vibrant, authentic, and wonderfully observed portrait of the tempo and
texture of today's Mexican youth urban culture that is hardly depicted in
film. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews.

sexuality and agnostic views. When Santiago drowns accidentally, Miguel has

THE FISH CHILD (EL NINO PEZ)
A film by Lucía Puenzo
Argentina, Spain, France / 2011 / 96 min / Spanish and Guaraní with English

Celebrated writer-director Lucía Puenzo follows up her 2007 award winning

sides of Argentina’s class divide. A privileged teenage daughter of a
powerful judge, Lala has fallen hard for her family’s 20-year-old
Paraguayan maid, Ailin. The girls hatch a plan to rob Lala’s family to fund
their dream of living together in Paraguay, on the shores of Lake Ypoá. But
while Lala waits to be reunited with her lover in Ypoá, Ailin is detained
in the outskirts of Buenos Aires for a crime she did not commit. Beautiful

*More than half a century ago, many Basques left Spain to look for a better

anthropological portrait,* Amerikanuak* looks at the lives of some of the
last remaining Basque sheepherders in the United States. Against the
backdrop of the vast blue skies and bleak but beautiful winter landscape of
the small town of Elko, Nevada, immigrants such as Juan “Parrillas”
Juaristi, an 83-year old resident at a Basque boardinghouse, reflect on the
difficulties that many of these immigrants faced in forging new lives in a
foreign country, their nostalgia for what was left behind, and their effort
to preserve Basque culture. The Basque group Audience created the
soundtrack specifically for the film, providing the perfect background for
this film about Spanish emigration, adaptation, courage, community, and a
rapidly disappearing way of life.
