_You Have the Right to an Attorney_

You Have the Right To an Attorney is a documentary short profiling public
defenders of the South Bronx. Young and idealistic, they struggle on a daily
basis to serve a never-ending tide of court-bound clients while hoping that
their work might affect broader change in a system they consider broken.

Hello,

I was wondering if you could provide me with suggestions for a film or
documentary about lawyers which illustrates the challenges/consequences of a
career in law. This film will be shown to our law students.

Thanks,

Re: [Videolib] DVD Region Problems

2016-08-30 Thread Kankiewicz, Michael

Hi All,

How do you handle situations when a professor wants a foreign language film
that is only available in a non-US region format?
Do you purchase the item and warn the professor of how the item will likely not
play on standard players, but that it would be possible to play on a computer
after switching regions?
Would it be illegal to make one copy of the film that is region-free or region
1 for ease of student use and destroy or lock away the original? If you have
done this, how did you do it?

You can reply off list if you like to achad...@highpoint.edu

Thank you for any insight you may have.

Amy Chadwell

Amy and all,

We do not make copies or recommend they change the region on their computer.
Rather, we recommend they download the free VLC Media Player. It will play
most anything.

EOTP I was released as a 3 Disc set. Then EOTP I & II was released together as
a 7 Disc set. AFAIK, EOTP II was never released as a separate DVD set. So if
you already have I on DVD, you have to buy the full set to get II.

Video Lib Friends,

Please direct me to a good source or give me some information on this. We have

issues have kept "Eyes on the Prize II" from being translated into DVD. Eyes on
the Prize I was translated into DVD in 2006 and is available for purchase from
DVD.

So, since this is not available in DVD... and since our VHS tapes are starting
to show wear, I "thought" that it might be a legal candidate for converting a
copy to DVD for our faculty to use. ...especially since our IT department is
pulling all VHS players and equipment out of our classrooms. They will no
longer support this format.

Our tech services librarian head says that his is NOT the case and quotes
"copyright expert" Lolly Gasaway as saying, " .

"There is no permission for libraries to convert format as long as the
equipment for using VHS is still being manufactured or is still reasonably
available." (This quote comes from her book, Copyright Questions and Answers

November).

So, does anyone out there have any insights into this? If this title is never
converted to DVD, may we not make an archival copy until literally our last VHS
machine dies?

Thanks for the input.

I'd disagree with in your reply and I hope you didn't think I was trying to get
around the issue. I was more looking for something authoritative I could send
to the professor other than the Librarian's word as we do not yet have official
course reserve guidelines explicitly spelled out for me to easily point to. As
for acquiring a region 2 player, I've brought it up a few times without getting
much traction although it's probably been due to the fact that the VAST
majority of required titles we use can be had as region 1 discs. Having said
that, the school is poised to move into a brand new facility in the next couple
of months which sounds like the perfect time to me to try to get at least one
multi-region player we can use. Anyway, thanks for the reply. Best regards.

Libraries don't have VCRs anymore.

A video that no one can watch might as well not exist. I would rather have a
crappy VHS-to-DVD copy than nothing at all. And I'm willing to pay for it.

Also, it's just a matter of time before VHS is an official obsolete format and
then, as my mom would say, "Katy, bar the door!" It might be to filmakers'
advantage to get out in front of that eventuality.
