packs for feature films. DVDs can be played in laptops.

Hi Folks,

I'm getting close to releasing my latest documentary. Are you folks
transitioning over to Blu-ray? Do DVDs still have a place in libraries? How
much of your new purchases are streaming as opposed to physical media?

[Videolib] Help finding LGBT feature films for a Christian college sexuality series

2016-01-15 Thread Kielley, Elizabeth
We are a small Christian college. Our health center does a sexuality series
and would like to start including feature films that introduce LGBT themes,
especially coming out, father/son relationships, mother/daughter relationships
and transgender issues. We have several students who struggle with their sexual
identity. If you have any suggestions that would work for a Christian college,
please respond. It does NOT have to be a religious or Christian film but these
films will be part of a campus discussion and would prefer films that can lead
to a civil discourse. For example, we are showing the film Milk, discussing
homosexuals, history and politics. Especially helpful would be any foreign
films that would show the diversity of treatment of the LGBT community in other
countries.

Rhonda and all,

Deg and Jo Ann’s process is similar to the one that I am researching at GMU now.

As part of the research process, I have compiled different 500 notes for
expressing Sec. 108 conversion. If anyone is interested in this list, let me
know.

Additionally, compiling a public site on ALA Connect about our best practices
on Sec. 108 is a project that I have been hoping to start up. It would be
simple: just needs someone to do the data entry and create the links.

If anyone is interested in developing a Sec. 108 best practices links list,
please contact me so we can discuss!

Rhonda: I will email you separately with more information.

Laura

At the University of Connecticut this is the process we follow. Since it is
labor intensive and time consuming we invoke section 108 sparingly.

1. Determine if the VHS is damaged, deteriorating, lost or stolen.

2. Document damage, deterioration. This checklist developed by Kenneth
Crews useful for ensuring i’s are dotted and t’s are crossed.
http://copyright.columbia.edu/copyright/files/2009/10/copyrightchecklist108preservation.pdf

3. If found to be damaged/deteriorating, conduct due diligence search for
evidence of new VHS or DVD for sale at a reasonable price. We use this
checklist (Creative Commons license), http://aladinrc.wrlc.org/handle/1961/16025

4. If no new VHS or DVD is found for sale then a DVD is made from the VHS.

5. The VHS goes to our archive and does not circulate.

6. The DVD goes on permanent reserve. The case is clearly marked,
“Section 108 Copy: In Building Circulation Only. This material was reproduced
under the provisions of Section 108 of United States Copyright Law and may be
protected by copyright.” “For use at UConn Libraries only. No InterLibrary
Loan. Does not include public performance rights but may be used in the
classroom.” “Preservation copy of Archival VHS. Not to be used outside of the
Library.”

7. The catalog record includes this statement, “For Use at UConn
Libraries only. No Interlibrary Loan. Does not include public performance
rights but may be used in the classroom.” And the permanent location is “Sec108
Copy (Reserve)”. The catalog record for the VHS indicates the location as
“Sec108 Original (@Dodd)”, our archive.

Anyone keep their dvd collection in open stacks, without locking cases? We're

instincts, many think putting them all in cases as too costly for preventing
little theft. Any thoughts or personal experiences are welcome!

Josh, at SLPL we are using the 3M security strips and laminating labels, which
cover our discs. They do have some positive attributes. The plastic coating
does a nice job of protecting the top sides of discs from being scratched. This
has been great, because once the top layer of a disc is marred, they typically
produce irreparable defects.
Conversely, we have had many problems with the security strips throwing off the
balance of discs during playback. This can lead to loud noises during playback
(especially in laptops), stuck discs in car CD players, inconsistent playback
(skips and stutters) and I have seen one (first
hand) destroy a laptop CD drive. When contacting 3M about the problem they
denied that their security strips would affect playback. However, when I point
blank said, "I have a DVD with a 3M strip that will not play in my player. I
have now removed the security label and strips and it plays fine. Please
explain." At that point the rep began telling me about differences in tolerance
between DVD players. In short, there are some playback issues when using the 3M
security strips. My two cents.

Hi Everyone,

My name is Josh Moorman and I just started as the new Head Librarian at the New
York Film Academy - Los Angeles. We're currently looking at upgrading the
library in a variety of ways with one of these being the selection,
installation, and implementation of a security system for the collection.
Almost half of the collection consists of DVD titles with the remainder being
books and screenplays. With having the sheer number of options appearing
daunting at best, I thought I would ask those on the list who may have
experience with a project such as this. Please reply to me off list.
Thanks in advance. Best regards.

Hey,

I'd like to start producing educational videos. Would someone be willing to
explain how the industry works or point me out to web resources. How does an
educational DVD end up with a group like films.com? Do they come from
independent development companies? Are they licensed by films.com?
How does it work?

[Videolib] Securing double-sided discs

2012-04-13 Thread Kielley, Elizabeth
Due to a renovation in our library and the implementation of a learning
commons, our entire video collection is moving to open stacks. This move will
necessitate some sort of security of our DVDs (not sure what to do about VHS).
Currently we use the security circles with our CD collection so will use those
on our DVDs. What do you do for those discs that are double-sided?
