Re: [Videolib] Film festival submissions?

2012-08-03 Thread Kim Crowley
I had a copy of a film that we screened at a conference while the film was
still on the Festival curcuit. Though the filmmaker was fine with me keeping
the copy as a personal copy, she said we would have to wait until they found a
distributor before adding it to our collection AND we had to purchase the
library copies from the distributor (which we did). I think you really need to
go on a case by case basis.

I would have to say that in some ways a film festival submission is a lot like
a studio screener, you may have possession of it, but you do not have rights to
it. The festival may not have the right to donate these to the library. It is
good that you are going to make sure from here on out that the wording is in
place for future festivals to allow for donation to the library.

I don't have a good legal frame of reference here but this seems extremely
dicey, especially if these are being added to a circulating collection. If I
were you, I would look at the submission contract one more time. Does the
document indicate that the festivals right to preview would be the exclusive
use of the screener?

There have been discussions on this topic on Videolib in the past, but I don't
know if there was a definitive answer. Maybe someone will chime in with more
info.

Hello,

I was wondering if any of you could give me a bit of direction.

Our Media Center recently received the 2007-2011 submissions from the Rhode
Island International Film Festival. We have a Film Program here and we're the
state college, so it makes sense. We'd like to catalog these items and add
them to the circulating collection (there are over 500 from all over the world,
most are not in WorldCat). Do we need the permission of the film creator to do
this? It did not say anything on the submission paperwork about works being
given to us after the festival as it was just decided, (we're going to fix that
for next year). The submission contract is the usual boilerplate, allowing the
festival rights to screen and no obligation to return. We're not going to copy
these items, or have screenings, the films will only be for educational and
entertainment use.

There is the possibility we could contact *most* of the submitters, however, if
it's not necessary we would prefer to make the changes to the future submission
process and go from there.

I'd appreciate any pointers you could share.

Thanks.

Angel

We do the same as you used to do, Becky. Keep the discs behind the desk. We
have an architect coming this morning to look at enclosing a space (glass
walls?) for our media collection. We will have a self-checkout in the room
and, possibly, a volunteer or staff member present. We'll probably still
experience loss, but we can't keep doing what we are doing. Our security gates
are about 35 years old and haven't worked for several years.

Hi, all,

First, sorry for any duplication. Background - until mid January, we double
shelved our cds and dvds - empty cases on the shelf, discs in file cabinets in
back of the circ desk. For several reasons - promoting self check out, space
considerations (lack of in the file cabinets), and the time it takes to
retrieve the discs, and then put them away, last fall, we put the discs for
all cds but Popular and Spanish in the cases, and so far, have had fairly
little loss. The decision was made to do this with the dvds, also. Since mid
January, we have lost over 170 titles, all but a very few are feature films. (I
know - ouch!) My question is, other than security boxes, such as Alpha, etc.,
or security overlays, what else is out there for securing cds and dvds in the
cases so light fingered patrons don't take them. Oh - we really don't have a
security system. I have contacted Midwest Tape about their locks. Thanks in
advance for any help.

Re: [Videolib] Donuts, anyone?

2011-05-25 Thread Kim Crowley
We use donut labels as well and we checkout about 150,000 discs of one sort or
another each year. We have had about 4 instances over the last several years
where a disc has gotten caught in a player. And I think only one of those was
in a DVD player; it has usually been in a multi-disc changer in a car (books on
CD), which can get very hot. However, the donut is the best system we have
found so far for our purposes.

By the way, we also clean our discs in a RTI cleaner which could over time add
to the degredation of those labels.

Subject: [Videolib] Donuts, anyone?

I've had a DVD processing issue come up, and I'm curious what the custom is
among other libraries. Currently, we affix a small round donut label to all
of our DVDs, printed with the name of our library. We used to hand-write our
ownership information around the center of the disc, but this became too
labor-intensive, so we switched to the donuts.

Recently, a patron contacted us and informed us that these donut labels had a
tendency to peel off and cause mischief inside people's players. This hadn't
actually happened to her--it was anecdotal information she was passing on, but
she was concerned it would happen in the future.

No one has actually contacted us about any problems with these labels in the
six months or so we've been using them. What I'm wondering is:

1) How many of you use (or have used) similar donut-style labels on your DVDs?
2) Approximately how long have you been using them?
3) Have you had any problems with them?

Any information will be very greatly appreciated--I don't want to continue
using labels that will damage anyone's machine, but I also don't want to change
our procedures unnecessarily, if this turns out to be all smoke and no fire.

Thanks very much,

Hi all

An ex-Berkeley faculty friend has posed a very cool reference question...I
can use your help:

I'm looking for examples of films that do interesting
things with words, either written or spoken, or (at the other extreme) try
to do without words. I've got lots of silent films with title cards I can
use, but I am looking for others. Some that come to mind include The Man
with the Movie Camera, My Dinner with Andre, and Koyaanisqatsi. Any
further suggestions? I'm interested in credits, subtitles, words on sets,
dialogue, voiceover, etc.

I've come up with Bob Dylan's lyric cards for Subterranean Homesick Blues
in Don't Look Back; the meta credits from the movie Stranger Than
Fiction; Buster Keaton in Samuel Beckett's Film(1965); and--oddly
enough--two Steve Martin Films (LA Story's sentient freeway sign and C.D.
Bales' [i.e. Cyrano's] hilarious put-down speech: Let's start with...
Obvious: 'scuse me, is that your nose or did a bus park on your face? )

I think Adaptation might have some relevant stuff, but I can't quite
remember.

What do you say?
