This is a shout out to all of you video/media/audiovisual librarians… Could you please tell me what you call your library or area of the library or college? The background is this – since the College’s existence in 1964, we have been called the Audiovisual or AV Library. I am the Audiovisual Librarian and we have an Audiovisual Administrative Assistant. However, we have just had a renovation of the entire library, and the Audiovisual Library has been left off of the new signage – we are not in directories, and there are no individual signs. No one knows where we are now that we have moved location!! The reason seems to be that the administrators of the College think that Audiovisual is a dated term. They would prefer something sexy, evidently, but they don’t know what. Actually, I think that the administration would be happiest if we went entirely to streaming!! We in the library still have a number of video tapes, cds, and many dvds which are heavily used by faculty and students. And we have viewing equipment. One proposal is Media Services – tho that has a bad connotation here on campus, as that used to be the department creating media productions and delivering equipment on campus. It had a poor reputation. Multimedia Services is taken by our IT department. I personally would like to keep Audiovisual Library but I don’t think that our Library Director is going to go with that. Could you please tell me what you are called, or if you have any ideas for sexy, forward-thinking titles? Thanks so much!! NEVER SCRUB 1) Spray the WD-40 on the rag...enough that it is wet not dripping 2) Then you dab the screen that has the ink on it 3) Let the WD-40 breakdown the ink a bit 4) Then dab off with a clean rag 5) Then repeat steps 1 - 4 until the ink is removed 6) WD-40 is oily so it will leave a shiny area on the screen 7) While the screen is wet with WD-40 use regular rubbing alcohol in the same manner as you used the WD-40 in Steps 1-4 until the screen texture comes back to normal. Your screen should like good as new...but be patient it takes time for the liquids to breakdown the ink. When you're done you will notice where you just cleaned the area will be a little brighter than the rest of the screen...how noticeable this will be will depend on the age of your screen but eventually the clean area will weather in to matching the rest of the screen. Hope this helps John and others with a similar problem. -deg deg farrelly, Media Librarian Arizona State University Libraries Hayden Library C1H1 P.O. The second film is a collection of explicit pornographic films produced by women for women, which is being promoted as feminist porn. For reference, one of my interns saw it in a theater in Paris and it comes with a manifesto, which you may read below. I have included descriptions of both as before we acquire I would like to know how many of you would potentially purchase explicit films for your collection. I believe these films are relevant to Women's Studies, LGBT and Film Studies, and are not 'just' pornography, although both qualify based on the content. Would the explicit content preclude you from purchasing? Please let me know your thoughts. Film #1 Unlike the abolitionist feminist movement, the pro-sex feminist movement, which began in the United States during the 1980s, asserts that representations of the body and of pleasure are areas that must be taken over by women and sexual minorities and that pornography must not be subject to control by the patriarchal state. It also calls for the legalization of sex work; female sex workers, porn actresses, strip teasers and lesbians have begun to speak out and to talk about themselves, generating a new culture that includes articles, books, films, documentaries, music, comics, artistic performances, etc. Made up of about 20 interviews filmed in the United States, France and Spain, the documentary gives the floor to pro-sex activists and follows the evolution of the movement from the 80s to the present, from its pioneers and its successors to its proactive activists in France and Barcelona. It also reveals previously unknown images directly tied to the subject (excerpts from films produced by activists, updates on their activities, archives of their works, performances and street demonstrations, etc.) Whether it's referred to as Pro Sex, Post Porn or queer, the movement is a creative and revolutionary one that calls on us to reflect on what a pornographic image is, what sex work is, what gender is, and what the whole point of feminism is. Disturbing, provocative and innovative, the film aims to play a saving role as it splits from popular discourse, which would have it that sex is best practiced in the bedroom, that women's dignity depends on their 'good' behaviour and passivity, that the only feminist themes to be debated are gender violence and the wearing of headscarves. ... allows us to see that activists are already occupying other playing fields, inventing other ways of having sex and of thinking of sexuality and gender.
