Also a sad follow up on MAN BY THE SHORE by Raul Peck, which I had
recommended. It is long out of print of video, never released on DVD and I
have no clue who owns the rights. Unfortunately this is not an unusual
situation with a foreign film distributed in the US.

Re: [Videolib] Haiti on Film

2010-02-18 Thread Meghann Matwichuk
There's /The Price of Sugar/, which won a spot on our Notables list last
year (2009). Great film, though controversial to the point of
litigation. From the website's 'About' section:

In the Dominican Republic, a tropical island-nation, tourists flock to
pristine beaches unaware that a few miles away thousands of dispossessed
Haitians have toiled under armed-guard on plantations harvesting
sugarcane, much of which ends up in U.S. kitchens. They work grueling
hours and frequently lack decent housing, clean water, electricity,
education or healthcare. Narrated by Paul Newman, The Price of Sugar
follows Father Christopher Hartley, a charismatic Spanish priest, as he
organizes some of this hemisphere's poorest people to fight for their
basic human rights. This film raises key questions about where the
products we consume originate and at what human cost they are
produced. http://www.thepriceofsugar.com

From what I understand, the legal issues have prevented the
availability of the film for home video release, but it is available
with PPR to institutions.

Best wishes for your series -- sounds like a great idea!

Cheers,

Re: [Videolib] Haiti on Film from Filmakers Library

2010-02-18 Thread Andrea Traubner
Dear Blaine,
Filmakers Library has many excellent films on Haiti. (Click on titles for full
descriptions.)

Failing Haiti

Haiti is a nation caught in a tragic, downward spiral. Its economy is broken,
its land denuded, and its children hungry. Combining vivid footage with
interviews of a wide range of people who are close to recent events there, the
film documents how the U.S. and the U.N. failed to help the country.

Frontiers: Haiti and The Dominican Republic

Formerly a thriving, prosperous French possession inhabited by descendants of
African slaves, Haiti is now one of the poorest countries in the world, while
an economic boom linked to tourism has occurred in the Dominican Republic.
Their border is plagued by daily violence and tension.

Buying the Spirit

This powerful documentary takes us into the hidden world of voodoo
practitioners and offers unique insight into a frequently misunderstood
religion.

Children of Shadows

In Haiti, some destitute families give up young children to work as unpaid
domestics in other households. The film reveals this exploitation.

Dreamers: The Painters of Haiti

The artwork of unschooled Haitian artists, painting with riotous color and
beguiling fantasy, is gaining appreciation in the outside world.

I am off to a meeting but let's email each other later. I am also
Haitian-American.

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of
issues relating to the selection, evaluation,
acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current
and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It
is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for
video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between
libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.

Re: [Videolib] Haiti on Film

2010-02-17 Thread TWN Distribution
Dear Blaine,

TWN distributes two documentaries about Haiti that might be of interest:

SECONDHAND (PEPE)
In this documentary about used clothing, the historical memoir of a Jewish
immigrant rag picker intertwines with the present-day story of 'pepe' —
secondhand clothing that flows from North America to Haiti. Secondhand
(Pepe) animates the
materiality of recycled clothes — their secret afterlives and the unspoken
connections among people in an era of globalization.

VOODOO DANCE
This film documents the significant role of Voodoo in Haitian culture from
the perspectives of Voodoo priests, government officials, historians and
politicians. Attacked by Western clerics and declared a superstition by
law in 1935, Voodoo has always been a source of empowerment for the average
Haitian. And scholars argue that despite the exploitation, romanticization
and vilification of voodoo, it remains an authentic and stabilizing cultural
base of everyday Haitian society.
