Re: [Videolib] Twitter Question

2010-10-05 Thread Elizabeth Sheldon
Mike,

I don't think anybody has ever described me as verbose... but I agree
about Mr. Ebert. I can't keep up with him.

And as I said, we are aiming for quality tweets, not spam. Like our
films: all essential, no supplement ; )

Now how about that HOWL review by Professor Fish in today's New York
Times -- any comments or thoughts, preferably deep?

I TOLD you I was probably a minority voice.

Twitter (and most blogs) always remind me of my hero, Neil Postman,
talking about the death of effective public discourse (killed under a
crush of buzz, shallow banter, tweet, and endless electronic noise). But
then again, I also lament the death of letter writing...

But I would venture to say that even Morris' tweets have more application for
some than for others.

This discussion reminds me of one in another forum where a poster mentioned
having to cancel Roger Ebert's Twitter stream because it was too prolific,
causing the dissatisfied poster to have to scroll through a sea of Ebertisms to
get to other stuff. So getting back to the original question for a second, I'd
advise keeping the number of your tweets under control-- which I doubt will be

Yeah that is grumpy. Twitter is like any other online resource -- it's
a tool. Good for some things, not so good for others. Well-used by
some tweeters, not so much by others. If you refine who you follow,
it's pretty easy to put together a manageable stream of useful
information. I find it helpful as one of many data streams to bring
links that might be of interest on new film releases, reviews,
filmmakers / projects, etc. So yes, I do use Twitter to help with
collection development and generally keeping aware in my field.

Dear All,

A question for the collective: have you found Twitter useful as a
librarian to receive information or do you mainly use it to promote
your own events?

I ask as we have just launched our Twitter account (twitter.com/
kinolorberedu) and it is bringing traffic into our new site
(www.kinolorberedu.com
). We are dedicated to providing meaningful content, such as articles
related to films (and not just our own), and updates about events,
such as community screenings.

What advice do you have for us to be a resource to the community?

Looking forward to your replies.

Best,

Re: [Videolib] Twitter Question

2010-10-05 Thread Rudy Leon
Gary, I'd say what's useful to you and what's useful to other audiences may
be very different. I've found twitter to be a very effective outreach tool,
precisely because the short blasts can gain the attention of our students,
and we design our tweets to lead into larger things.

As a librarian, I learn about a lot of things via twitter. I used to get
newspaper and professional journal headlines & TOCs via email, and now I get
those via twitter. My friends comment on articles and blog posts via
twitter, and lead me back to those sources.
