Re: Stefano Pesori
Stefano Pesori's Galeria Musicale (1648) has both a tuning chart and a tuning check in tablature. The tuning check says 'in ottava'. If we check the tuning like that, there must have been low strings on the fifth and fourth courses. We cannot even be sure if there were also high octaves on those courses. I would suppose they were there, but octaves are almost never mentioned. Lex Not at all...although I'd favor specifics regarding the octave sounded: a-a, d-d', g-g, b-b, e' or A-a, d-d', g-g, b-b, e', etc. There is a nice summary table of tunings that can be deciphered from various period methods in Tyler Sparks (2002), although some of the things they lump with guitars probably weren't. Bourdons all-'round were common to Spanish music. To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
soulful
soul music has a distinct connotation to me - rhythm and intonation being part of it as well as profound sentiments stated in simple words. to my limited knowledge, i can't honestly say that i find anything in the early music repertoire that's particularly soulful - in the modern context - and i have only a vague idea of what soul in a musical sense would mean to those living at that time; sentiments of gather ye rosebuds while ye may being about it, i suppose. when i play some pieces on the oud (deep, mean-tone notes) they sound sort of soulful but i'm not sure if that was the composers intent. laments can sound soulful but - again - i tend to play those in a rough-hewn way, interpreting them as if i they were blues. haven't got it down yet but can vei lauzeta mover could be a contender. there may be obvious and striking examples but at the moment, i can't think of one. anyone care to illuminate me? ... mp3's? and thus i made...a small vihuela from the shell of a creepy crawly... - Don Gonzalo de Guerrero (1512), Historias de la Conquista del Mayab by Fra Joseph of San Buenaventura. go to: http://www.charango.cl/paginas/quieninvento.htm ___ How much free photo storage do you get?
