[VIHUELA] playing cords

2008-05-17 Thread robert fallis
in spite of the posh new site, can I ask a question here, I have got to
Ballo Sarmatico ix
from the torban site, it has five note cords, my question is do you use
the little finger

to play the top note, or do you play the two bass notes with the thumb??
or is there some other way?

[VIHUELA] Re: contributions to this list

2008-01-26 Thread robert fallis

So I call on all those lurkers who are even too shy to contribute emails,
let us know what you are up to, ask questions.

 Rob,
as a semi lurker here's what I'm up to,

I built my own Vihula about two years ago with the help of the people on
this list.
it was in F but I've modified it since to G at 59cm I use d'addario folk
nylon strings,
as the sound board is a little thick and needs modern strings to drive it.
sorry no gut here!!
for music I'm playing my way through the renaissance archive on
torban.org, I love the simple melodys
and at 70 in april I don't think I will get much futher, bach and wiess
can rest in peace, I will not destroy

there music.

I did not know that, Bill, I use D'Addario. low tension folk nylon guitar
strings, with the ball ends

they so they fit easily in the brigde

but wilkl try some next time

Bill,
I'm a 69 year old dyslexic,, I have real problems reading staff notation,
I was taught the voilin at a early age,
and still read staff notation,in violin fingering, about ten years ago I
took up the lute, and now the vihuela, I struggled a bit
with tablature, but now I read it well, no way will I go back to staff, if
I use it I still struggle, perhaps one of the reasons people have
difficulty with reading music, is the staff and the way it's written

 Alexander,
What is the thickness of the vihuela sound board? is it
the 3mm of the
modern guitar? or less?.

thanks for the reply Rob..what then do you feel is the best string lenght

standards guitar and has to play one with a string lenght of 61cm.?

[VIHUELA] double or single course?

2005-11-08 Thread robert fallis
While I'm waiting to get round to making a proper vihuela, I've been
trying to play some of the music for it. I have a small guitar in F which
I've used a capo on to bring it into G, with the quality of modern guitar
strings , this produces plenty of volume and a nice tone,
So how important to the sound of the Vihuela is the double courses? I've
always felt that the double course on early instruments was due to the
lack of good string technology, so if I make an instrument with single
couses, is it a vhihuela? or a small guitar, for playing old music?

the groups advise would be helpful,
