[VIHUELA] Re: Kremberg pieces as suite

2009-02-18 Thread Monica Hall
Interesting to hear them played in this way! I always thought they wer
intended to be sung!

Kremberg spent his later years in England and was buried in St. Anne's
Church in Soho! I'll have to go and see if I can find his grave sometime.

Rob might like to know that in 1702 Kremberg was lute teacher to the
children of Lady Griseli Baillie of Mellerstain House in Berwickshire.

According to the entry for him in the latest edition of Groves (written by
Peter Holman) Kremberg was one of the more incompetant composers of the
period but that didn't stop him writing full scale works including some
operatic scenes to a play by the Duke of Buckingham!

Rocky Mjos has made an edition of selected pieces from Kremberg's
'Musicalische Gemuths-Ergotzung' (1689):

and I've mad a little suite of seven of them (lasts 5mins 45 seconds!):

From David Johnson's 'Music and Society in Lowland Scotland' [OUP 1972
   - but there is an updated reprint from - I think - two years ago]. I've
copied all the spellings from this book.

The entries [from Lady Grisell Bailie (1665-1746)] date from 1701 to
   1714...

To Grisies (the daughter) singing master Krenberg 14 pounds 4

For Grisies singing to Mr Krenberg 7 pounds 8

To Mr Kramberg, Grisells singing master for the mounth past 7pounds 8

To Grisis singing master Cremberg 7pounds 8

For mounthes at the violl to Grisie with Sinc kolum - 12pounds

For 2 mounth to Grisie with St Culume on the vyolle, etc 15pounds 3

[There are many more payments for musical services, but none mention
   either Kramberg or St Colombe]

Rob: There is a manuscript of 6-string viol music by St Colombe from
this period in Durham Cathedral library, and much of it has been
recorded by my partner in crime, Jonathan Dunford.

Bravo! Very nicely played, Stuart.

I suspect it is a world premiere recording, too!

Thanks for giving such a nice voice to those tablature notes and for
sharing this playing with the group.
