Yup, serious. Remove everything removable from the circuit board and run it
through a cycle in a dishwasher, BUT DO NOT PUT IT THROUGH THE HEATED DRY
CYCLE. Let the board air dry.

If the problem is caused byt the electrolyte that's leaked from the caps,
that'll temporarily fix it. However, the capacitors' values will likely have
changed some, or if they've leaked enough they may not be working at all, or
worse, shorted out.

A component that fails open is less likely to cause damage elsewhere than one
that fails closed to a short circuit, allowing full voltage to where it's not
supposed to go.

The best thing to do is replace the capacitors.

Looking for info on early Apple 2 Brown Vinyl bag

2009-08-29 Thread jmorand

I recently acquired a brown vinyl bag from someone in San Jose, which
I was told was used to carry early Apple II computers. It is medium
brown and has an Apple logo sticked into it, also in brown. The bag
was made in the usa but I have no idea who made it or even if it was
made for or sold by Apple itself. Any info on this would be
appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Mac Portable Problems

2009-08-29 Thread Cyrus Griffin

On the ones I've used, it's the Energy saver dry setting, meaning it
saves energy by not turning on the heat coil. You might find
documentation online for your dishwasher to check how to do that,
since it's a delicate part, wouldn't want to take the chance and
damage it.

Suppose it depends on the make and model.

I just let the dishwasher go thru all the wash cycles and when it hits the dry
cycle I rotate the knob to off. Or I could just open the door which will also
turn it off.

I'm no expert on dishwashers, just started using one about a month ago while
cleaning out an estate of a close family member. --glen

I have seen a vinyl cover, but never a real bag. Your best bet might be to
hit the comp.sys.apple2 newsgroup which has the largest number of ][-heads
that can help you out. Secondary would be the Apple II googlegroups list,
but the folks on there are also on comp.sys.apple2.

selling a Mac IIci

2009-08-29 Thread jshore

I previously posted my old Macintosh IIci for sale locally in the
greater SF Bay Area and Monterey area but got little interest so I
will consider shipping it now. (I would be shipping from zip code
93922). This Mac is running system 7.5, has the typical software of
the early 90's such as Office and MacDraw and comes with a portrait
display monitor (black and white only). I am not looking to make much
money here - just trying to find a good home for my machine as I sadly
no longer have the space for it. Reply here with your interest and
contact info and I will get back to you.

Depends on the dishwasher. Search The Fine Internet for a manual for yours. You
want whatever cycle does NOT use the heating element in the bottom of the tub.

I read on this forum a few months ago that if you put tape over the hole on
the center of the disk it will read as an 800k of curse the tape can fall
off over item so it is only a short term solution.

some SE's will say super drive (those are 1.44MB) but the others are 800

Hope this helps

I put a copy here:

You may need to substitute a space where the %20 is. Or you can
browse from:

to "Classic Mac" and then download the
TestPatternGenerator

It is a Disk Copy floppy image.

Re: 400k and 800k disks

2009-08-29 Thread Scott Holder

Not the hole in the center, the hole on the upper left (opposite the
write-protect tab).

This is very much a ymmv type thing. It'll probably work well enough for
testing purposes, but it's definitely not something you'll want to use
for important data. I have some "converted" disks that work fine years
later, others start having read/write errors within days and have to be
reformatted.

Making a couple or three "converted" boot disks ought to be sufficient
to ensure any errors you get are the drive and not the disks. Although,
if it's in nice shape and not overpriced, disk drives are readily
available dirt cheap. You can even replace it with a 1.44 HD disk drive
and it'll work just fine as an 800k drive. If you ever do the FDHD
upgrade on it, you'll already have it too.

This is absolutely true - works !
Putting in a drive out of an other machine (let's say a Performa) allows 1.3
