Performa 250

2009-08-30 Thread ArivindAbraham

Hi all,

I'm new to this group and decided to join because my folks have just
informed me that they have found an old Performa 250 in our house in
Malaysia and they want me to bring it back to the UK with me when I
head over in December for a holiday.

I'm planning on keeping it but wanted to ask you guys a couple of
things:

1. Is there anything interesting I could put it to use for as a
computer these days?

2. My mum wants to know how much roughly collectors pay for one of
these? (I am not gonna let her sell it off but she will want an answer
so any rough estimates would be grand)

Thanks everyone!

Arivind Abraham

RE: Performa 250/software/links

2009-08-30 Thread WhyOSX

This still is a nice machine for writing (although the screen is too small),
and for a few games.
To find out what exists, I recommend the macintoshgarden.org.
There's any kind of app and system components for free (discontinued software).
Any system before 8 can be loaded from the official Apple site for free as
well, btw.

And for furthermore questions, join the retromaccast.ning.com !

Let's try 'The corner' of the disk. 'The Center' will mess things up

I knew that taping "the center" was a mis-understanding. You are right, a
faulty drive shouldn't stop me from buying it.
Thanks!

Strange hard drive behavior

2009-08-30 Thread Alex

Hi there,

after having formatted my Seagate ST51080N 1 GB I wanted to create
partitions on it. I started Lilo to do this. After a rebott there were
no volumes. So I opened Lilo again but now it just says "OSErr = 5
Bad SCSI Command: phase error." Neither Lilo nor Apple's SD HD Setup
want's to do anything.

Both the termination and the connection are ok. Is the disk "dead"?

Freezing Macintosh SE

2009-08-30 Thread Alex

Hi there,

I was able to format and mount an SCSI HD (meanwhile it died - look
the other thread) and I even installed System D-7.5.5.

The problem is, that sometimes the mac "freezes". It's difficult to
describe, but sometimes it just freezes and I can't do anything,
sometimes a "bomb" appears with errors like "a system error occured"
with some cryptic numbers but the buttons have no text and sometimes
just a white flashing rectange appears with neither buttons nor text
on it. RIGHT NOW: I pressed the "power on" key on the keyboard and the
message "Sorry, a system error occured. adress error".

Is it possible, that these errors are caused by either the RAM upgrade
I performed or the "hot" hard drive? I know that the hard drive gets
quite hot. Before I was upgrading the RAM everything was well...

I hope someone's able to help me.

RAM is the prime suspect. Go back to the old RAM and see if that fixes the
problem.

The HDD could also be the problem but I would check the RAM first --glen

Energy saver mode or turning off Heat Dry. I used two drops of Dawn
dishwashing soap (no detergents) and ran it through one cycle and let air
dry for two days. worked finetemporary fix. I've replaced caps on three
boards thus far, with good results.

I went back to the old RAM and everything is well now but I am a bit
sad now, because the system is English. I wanted the computer for my
little brother and it would be very nice to have the system in German
(System 6 - System 7 is too fat now).

I have ordered an aditional cooler to fix that problem, if there is one.

Also, try removing and re-installing the memory, re-arranging it if
possible.

I looked a bit closer at the RAM SIMMs. The "original ones" have the
suffix -10. My "added ones" have the suffix -70. Am I right, that the
original ones are 110 ns and my new ones 70 ns?
