SCSI conflict on Mac IIci

2018-11-26 Thread dlewis1791
Hello,

I’m trying to resolve a SCSI conflict with two external hard drives plugged
into my IIci. The SCSI chain and termination seem okay and I can boot with
either drive running, just not both together. When i have both drives running,
the machine will boot and then freeze on a blank screen with the chimes of
death.

I checked the ID number for either drive and they are distinct; ie “4” versus
“6”.

The only possible source of the problem I have come up with are broken
partitions on one of the two drives. Apple HD setup does not show anything
though.

In binary, these IDs differ by only one bit (100, 110). If there's a loose
wire between the ID selector and the jumper block on the drive itself - or
worse, if the selector is disconnected entirely - the drive may be on a
different ID than shown.

I advise using a SCSI bus scanner to identify which ID each drive is actually
showing up on.

Looking for Performa 631cd, monitor w/speakers, and more

2018-11-26 Thread superstar64
I bought a centris a while back, and from my experience since, I can maybe help
you. First, I don’t have a Performa 631cd laying around, so I can’t sell you
one. Second, I recommend you just buy a monitor adapter because 1. It’s
cheaper, and 2. You can use much more modern displays with a better picture
than the old CRT displays. Third, I would do the same with the speakers,
although I just use the built in speaker on my Centris 660av, and fourth, Get
the Apple Design Keyboard and ADB Mouse 2, because I think they feel and work
the best. I just don’t like the blocky shape of the older ADB Mouse, and the
design keyboard gives you function keys and a numeric keypad. Those are my tips
and tricks, just be sure not to fall for a guy who says he “can’t test it, so
it’s as is”.

This is not very scientific but in the days of old when A SCSI conflict defied
my logic,  I'd change the SCSI ID on one or both of the drives and /or change
the physical location of the drives on the chain. Sometimes it worked.

My thoughts exactly. IIRC Get Info on the drive will tell you the SCSI ID

That's probably an indication that the selector is not connected to the drive
inside the enclosure, but instead the ID has been set with jumpers. It's
important to realise that the selector has nothing to do with the SCSI cable
that it's mounted next to, it's only an easier way to change the jumper
settings on the drive itself.

Re: SCSI conflict on Mac IIci

Well, the next thing to check is if the cable (or just wires) from the ID
selector goes to the drive or is just hanging loose.

Drive ID 6 was the most commonly used ID. It’s possible someone put a drive
pulled from a computer into that case and just didn’t bother plugging in the ID
cable.
