Thanks

Macs: G3 Beige; CD ROM drive playing up.

  NB had worked perfectly.

Misc Equipment: Alps SCSI printers x 2 in working order.

  Apple Monitor; Small works OK

Epson Multi- Colour printer-Scanner-Photo-copier; works OK, print heads

I am trimming my collection, and have a number of machines that *I*
have no further interest in. On the disposal pile right now are 2 Mac
IIs (sans disks or memory) and a 610. Others will be following.

My question is: does anyone have any interest in these
non-collectable machines? Are they more collectable than I think?
Do *you*, gentle reader, want them for the cost of shipping from
  Eastern MA?

In general, I am keeping compact macs, macs with video or audio editing
capabilities, and unusual machines (such as a 68000, Inc., souped up
IIfx designed for the prepress market). Some of the low-end video
editing machines (like the 660 AV) will eventually be in search of
homes as well. As I dig deeper, I expect some Quadras and PPCs to surface.

I also have some garden-variety peripherals, such as Zip and Jaz
disks, that I think are not worth trying to find homes for, but should
just be disposed of. Likewise some older mac-compatible printers,
such as various flavors of Epson.

The machines I am asking about are, in general, machines that I think
are neither old enough, unusual enough, nor rare enough to be worth
preserving for historical reasons, and not new enough or powerful
enough to be work setting up for use (given that I have other machines
  that are more interesting/powerful).

Anyone disagree with my assessment that I should just recycle these?

This world is not perfect. I spent some time putting together MacCaps.com,

There are many people that like macs to!
That is the reason for this forum and many others.

 I wouldn't even say I offer a service. I'm not a busness.
I mean how much do you get paid an hour? Many boards take like 2 hours to
 properly complete.

Heck i even take on boards nobody else will touch. Guys that tried to do it
them selves lifted pads, got fusterated - what ever.
i do those to… same price.

If I sent you (a) friendly email saying Hey i'll do that for you, If ya

Re: Vintage Mac users based in Ulster, British Isles and Republic of Ireland.

2013-06-22 Thread Charles Lowndes
I'm in Britain (Staffordshire) and in to vintage Macs. Actually I'm desperate
to find some one who can recap mine (I don't what the skills for that).

I had plenty of kit spanning from the Plus through to G4's and the like., and I
try to still use most of it in a local school I work in to teach kids about the
history of computers.

Currently looking for a Pizza box Mac, but eBay starting bids and buy it now
prices have got silly in the last 12 months or so, they don't even appear to
sell, being listed many times.

Anyway enough rambling, it's cool that there are others this side of the pond,
if not exactly 'local'!

Re: Stolen 1400 powerbook, and titanium laptop

2011-08-08 Thread Charles Lowndes
Hi,

I'm not sure how insurers work in the US so was not going to reply, but Todd
seems to have hit the nail on the head. Talk to them.

In the UK the majority of insurers do new for old?

Re: Need to write 800k floppy disks for my Macintosh

2011-06-16 Thread Charles Lowndes
Yes that absolutely the problem.

You can format a 1.44 disc with a Plus or whatever for 800k , but you then
cannot use that disc in a more modern machine with a 1.44 drive because it will
ruin the formatting.

So you are stuck. i had to get a guy in Canada to send me some 800k system 6
discs for my Plus which I promptly ruined by sticking them in a 1.44 USB drive
to take a back up of them.

So I'm in the same boat, I need to make 800k floppies with a system image on
and the only machine that will do it needs the images to boot.

I will have another look at it when I get home tomorrow night, see if i can
coax the old 10mb HDD into life and see if I can make some images and send them
out to you.

I have an old Macintosh SE that can't handle 1.44mb floppy disks

As far as I know, the problem is that also if you have an image you need to
write the disk with old mac: but you can format 1.44 in the mac format (400k
or 800k) This is due to a different format type on oldest mac.

Re: Curious about a new acquisition

2011-05-18 Thread Charles Lowndes
Sounds like the capacitors have gone it. I have one of similar vintage that
does that, but if I leave it on long enough (10 mins or so), she boots!

Try that, failing that some one with technical expertise will be along shortly!

Re: What is a Mac formated Komag 128 Rewritable disk?

I have received a request to transfer data from a Komag 128 MB rewritable

After a Google search I found little info but suspect the disk falls into the
magneto-optical category. What drive is required to do read this disk?

Here is a description from the requester:
I do know that they were used on a Mac system [predates 1997]. They're
 almost
exactly the size of two stacked 3.5 floppy diskettes, with the write protect

notch in the same position. There are two of them labelled Komag 128 MB
 rewritable.

Any info appreciated, thanks -- glen
