I've set up a Mac IIsi with AppleShare Server 3.0 to remote boot and old
Apple IIgs. I'm wondering if its possible to use my Workgroup Server
running a/ux to do the remote boot.

Re: Clicking 40mb Fujitsu SCSI HDD, ideas?

2013-09-12 Thread Doug Kiekow
There are a few odd tricks that might get it running. Easiest to try us simply
to turn the drive (or the whole computer) upside down and try booting. Another
even stranger is to freeze the drive as in put in the freezer for a few hours.
Try to connect it up before it warms up. I have an external quantum that i have
to flip each time before use. It's been that way for over 10 years, but still
works.

FWIW I use Dell 15” LCDs on a variety of vintage macs. Mostly thru the
switched connectors, but on IIsi’s the non switched 640x480 works best. If you
need to make your own the Knowledge Base article "Macintosh Monitor Sense

Never tried a 17”, doubt if the vram i’ve got would support that pixel density.
Currently connected: Dell 1505FP to a IIsi, Dell 1505FP to a Quadra 950, Dell
E152FPb to a PowerMac 7200. Also have a Dell E152FPb connected to an Apple
//gs, but that is through a strange video game-to-monitor board. Last is a
Vision Sciences CTscan medical monitor connected to a Quadra 800. Some of the
connectors will only work on certain machines, and it’s best to start at
640x480 and work up.

Re: Finding old Apple Laserwriter //I have some Apple Laserwriters

2017-01-07 Thread Doug Kiekow
It depends on your current operating system. First you need a copy of the
LaserWriter Pro 630 PPD from an older operating system. Then on a 10.11.x
system you need to disable SIP and install the PPD in (your hard
drive)/Library/Printers. Next go to System Preferences, Printers & Scanners and
add a new printer. Choose the IP address of your printer, the line printer
protocol (LPD), click on the Use line and Select Software. Your LaserWriter
should then be in the Printer Software list that opens.

Somewhere between 10.6.x and 10.11.x the location of the PPD’s changed and I’m
not sure when.

There are several voodoo fixes that might help. Since the drive is somewhat

Re: "Sticky" 80Mb Quantum Drives

2017-02-18 Thread Doug Kiekow
Could well be, I can only relate things that have worked for me. There is a
full height drive (IBM) in my Quadra 950 that’s been in the freezer more times
than I care to think about over the last decade and it hasn’t groaned it’s last
yet. My more classic macs have a mixture of drives, but mostly Quantum, and
they have survived even more extreme measures. The last 2 Connor drives that
totally failed I’ve replaced with SCSI2SD adapters, and think I will continue
that conversion if and when other drives fail.
