Anyone ever used Ultra320 drives in their vintage Macs?

2018-04-26 Thread Christian Wacker
I've got a Mac Classic with a nearly failed drive and a whole pile of
Ultra160 and Ultra320 drives. Converters to plug an Ultra drive into a
standard SCSI system are around $10 shipped.

Has anyone ever been successful installing one of these drives into a
vintage mac?

Pretty sure I used to use one in my powermac way back when, don't recall if
I ever used it on 68K macs. I don't recall any termination or ID issues,
but it was quite a while ago...

Yup. I've used SCA80 drives with adapters in various vintage Macs.

My Mac IIfx has a 68-pin SCSI drive installed right now, through a 68-to-50
adapter. I don’t know exactly which flavor of SCSI it is, but it works great.

Many people have. There is extensive discussion of this over on 68Kmla.org
a few years ago.

These drives are always wide drives, so any adapter is adapting a wide
drive to a narrow SCSI bus. And, at least in the case of SCA drives (80
pin) there is no termination provided on the drives -- no jumpers to enable
termination.

People have had success with the cheap simple adapters, but the rate of
success is better if one gets an adapter that provides the means to
terminate the upper byte of the wide drive. Virtually all of the cheap
adapters on Ebay do not provide termination.
