Hello all. You've given me great service in the past so now I'm asking
again.

I have a Quadra 610 and I recently got an Iomega ZIP drive. What I
need now is a cable with a wide end, the other end being a smaller
end. I owned the Quadra for nearly 20 years and it works, as well as
can be expected But I know none of the cable names. Is there such a
cable as I describe.

Re: I need a cable.

2011-03-21 Thread Gregg Eshelman
The only way an external SCSI ZIP drive will have a CEN-50 connector is if it's
an internal drive put in an external case.

See this article and talk page for ZIP drive info.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zip_drive

If your external ZIP drive has a large USB "B" connector and a weird looking
wide connector, it is a USB ZIP 250 but not a USB powered model.

The large connector is for an optinal 1394 Firewire or PC-Card connection. With
either one of those attached, the separate power supply is not required.

The USB powered ZIP 250 has a back end with nothing but the large USB "B"
connector.

If you have a USB or Firewire ZIP drive, the earliest Macs they can be used
with are Powermacs with built in USB or Firewire ports or Powermacs with PCI
slots that a USB and/or Firewire card can be installed in. (Do *not* use a USB
PCI card with a controller chip made by VIA. The Mac drivers have next to
useless support for them.)

IIRC OS 8.1 had some USB support but 8.6 was the first version to have good
support for USB and Firewire. Prior to OS X there's no Macintosh support for
USB 2.0.

Got a NuBus Mac? No USB for you! (Even though USB interfaces have been made for
several old 8-bit micros, the NuBus Macintosh has been ignored by the hacker
hobbyists. Same deal with nobody writing USB 2.0 drivers for OS 9.x.x.)

RE: I need a cable.

2011-03-22 Thread Wesley Furr
Are you sure it's a SCSI zip and not a parallel port zip for a PC? Here's
an image so you can see what both of them look like:

The ZIP comes with a cable with db 25 male on one end and a db 25 female on
the other end. I do have two 25/50s that work with the comp and Iomega but
when I plug it in nothing works. The comp has a blinking question mark and
that's it. When I unplug the extra cable it works . . . ?

Re: I need a cable.

2011-03-22 Thread dale-gmail

the male /female db 25 is for parallel port ZIP drives. (i.e. PC type)
probably will not work if plugged into the Q 610.

did you check the pictures sent from Wesley Furr
notice the difference between parallel and scsi drives.
only the scsi drive will work pugged into the scsi port on the Q 610.
the cable will be a male/male db25.

if any other type of connectors, the zip drive will not work without some
type

of adapter if ever..

there should be a db 25 connector (25 pins) on the back of the q 610
the other question is how many pins on the zip drive?
25 or 50 and if the connector on the zip is a wide connector or narrow

Pc ZIP drives on a mac will cause the drive or mac to go boom.

If the back of the zip drive does NOT have a setting for termination/id and
if the back of the zip says PC over one of the ports, DO NOT USE.

That's a good point. I only happen to have the first 2, but there are
3 types of 100 MB Zip drives:

1.) SCSI - these will work on PC and Mac
2. ) USB - these will work on PC and Mac
3.) Parallel - these will only work on a PC

There was also the abomination of the SCSI / Parallel. It had a single DB-25
connector for either interface. Aside from finicky operation what made it an
abomination is that IOMega required / recommended it be the only device on a
SCSI bus.

4.) Zip Plus - auto-switching SCSI and Parallel but didn't work too well

USB Zip 250 external came in two types. USB with external power supply, had a
large connector for Firewire or PCMCIA (probably SCSI) converters, both of
which provided power so the AC transformer wasn't needed.

USB Powered - only had a USB port on the back, powered by the USB cable.

Internal Zip 100 came in two different SCSI versions, first a dark blue
faceplate type which fit in a 5.25" bay and only supported SCSI ID 5 and 6.
Then the 3.5" SCSI, IDE and later ATAPI versions were introduced.

I dunno if the 3.5" internal SCSI version supports all SCSI ID's.

The IDE type is the one to stay away from. It's easy to tell IDE VS ATAPI
versions. IDE has a black eject button with the activity light next to it.
ATAPI has a clear eject button with the activity light shining through it. IDE
has an emergency eject pull rod at the upper left of the faceplate. ATAPI has
an emergency eject hole in the back, upper left. (Not convenient at all to get
to.)

I dunno a thing about internal Zip 250 or 750 or anything about Zip 750
external.

RE: I need a cable.

2011-03-23 Thread Wesley Furr
Ah yes...I forgot about the Zip Plus. An interesting idea for sure...

The place I used to work had a number of the USB/flexible units. In order
to get them to work with the Windows 95 laptops (via the docking station
which was essentially a USB hub) for backup use, they had to buy and use the
PCMCIA adapters. Pretty sure it wasn't a SCSI interface, but I guess
anything is possible. The nicest zip drive we worked with was probably the
last...a modular unit that went into the floppy/CD bay in a Compaq laptop.

I've only ever run across one Zip 750...it was an internal IDE (technically
ATAPI I suppose) unit. As I recall the 750's can read any capacity, but
only write to 250 and 750 disks.

Wikipedia confirms that...and has some more interesting info on Zip drives
for those who might be interested:

Re: I need a cable.

2011-03-23 Thread Adam
That's not entirely true. I have a SCSI/Parallel Zip 100 drive that I
originally used with a PC when I was in college, but now I use it on
my SE with an Apple SCSI CD drive. Once the SCSI ID settings were all
set up, I have had absolutely zero problems with it, even transferring
stuff from Snow Leopard or Leopard via IDE ZIP or Tiger or SL via USB
ZIP. My combo ZIP drive has been running like a champ for me for the
better part of 7 years now.
