Linking a LC II with a Linux PC (newbie question)

2002-12-03 Thread Razvan Sandu
Hello!

Sorry for disturbing the list with a newbie question, but I have no other
possibility to solve this problem. Would you please help ?

I am trying to hook up a vintage Mac LC II and a Linux PC through an
Ethernet link. Configuration is the following:

Mac LC II (that with the old small monochrome monitor)
6 MB of RAM
System software 7.1
Ethernet adapter (with BNC connector)
AppleTalk panel present under System - Chooser, network in on position

Linux PC
Red Hat Linux 8.0
Ethernet adapter (with BNC connector)
Linux atalk software (standard in RHL 8.0)

Thin coax cable, 50 ohm terminators, etc.

The problem is I can't see anything into AppleTalk panel when I connect the
PC (I only have two icons, File sharing and Laser Writer).

Since I'm a total newbie on the Mac platform, I have no ideea if there are
things like a workgroup assignement, how I can establish an IP address for
the Mac, how can I ping another computer, which other programs do I need and
how I install them, etc. ...

Would you please help?

Thanks a lot,
Razvan

Yeah, uh, there actually needs to be a netatalk server - not just the protocol
itself - *running* if you want to see a shared volume on the network.

Take a look at sourceforge or your Redhat cd's for a program called
Netatalk.

changing HD in a IIci

2002-12-03 Thread dan_A

--
Hi List

A few months ago I changed a battery in my IIci so I have the
experience of removing the power supply, drive bay pillar and drives.
This was not easy because of the difficulty in pulling the power
supply. Recently the internal HD went kaput and I want to replace it.
The question is: is it necessary to pull the power supply to remove
the hard drive which is on top of everything? It looks accessible but
is it? Sorry for the basic question but I've not done this in a
IIci. Thanks for any info.

You should be able to squeeze the two metal tabs on the HDD holder and lift it out.
Unplug the SCSI and power cables to the HDD first.

MediaVision NUBUS Card

2002-12-03 Thread KADaggett
This message written: Tuesday, 3 December 2002 11:26:37 PST

Salvaged a MediaVision NUBUS card (model NUBUSPAS16-TH) from a Performa
600 headed to the dump/recyclers. It has a copyright date of 1992.
Largest chip seems to be a Spectrum device. The connector on the output
(at least the connector that is on the backplane plate) of the card is a
26 pin, D type.

Can't seem to find any info on this thing. Any ideas?

Ken

Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.

Well to be technical it is a PowerBook as I said. But there should
be no reason it wouldn't work an a desktop Mac with IDE (but not an

You'll also need a version of Stuffit Expander that

For your Linux box, you can emulate a 68k Mac. :)

Still not there. That's plugging the CF card into
an IDE port. The LC only has SCSI. There are adaptors
to plug IDE drives into SCSI, but they cost more
than an LC and everything you could possibly connect
(and actually use!) at one time. (No fair hooking
up a 127Gig 10,000 RPM hard drive. ;-)

Nope. Simply unplug the SCSI and power cables from
the back of the drive then press the two vertical
metal tabs on each side slightly towards each other.
Then the drive will lift out. You'll have more
trouble removing the screws that hold the drive to
the bracket if they've never been removed before.
After the new drive is mounted to the bracket, gently
bend the tabs outward so they'll snap into the
plastic drive shelf. Of course you should set the
SCSI ID # and enable termination on the drive
before mounting it to the bracket.

That is a MediaVision Pro Audio Spectrum 16bit

popular for PC computers.)

It looks accessible but
is it? Sorry for the basic question but I've not done this in a
 IIci. Thanks for any info.

 dan_A

No, I've done it without removing the power supply many times. The basic
trick is you'll
encounter a little frustration with the short SCSI cable attached to the
hard drive, and the power
cable.

I use a small blade screwdriver to pry at the sides of the cable where it
enters the socket on the
hard drive. A gentle wiggle gets both cords off. For putting them back on I
use a pair of needle-nosed
pliers as my hands are too fat to reach in and press them back into place.

Incidentally, for easier power supply removal, I pry the plastic tong
between the power supply and the
hard drive/floppy drive assembly with a small blade screwdriver, raise the
power supply slightly, then place
a larger blade screwdriver in under the AC cord socket and wiggle and pry
gently. It raises the power supply
and creates a gap between the socket and the case which I pry on to
lift-while-wriggling. Gets it our much
easier.

That's damned amazing. It's a very close bridge to placing a boot rom into a

I always remember a news article on a BBC program once fortelling of
the virtues of Solid State Media. This guy had a PC laptop with PCMCIA
and booted it from an MS Windows Boot Card :). Another of the wonderful
geniuses of foresight that was built into the Amiga 600 and 1200 (her I
go again with the damn Amiga!) was a PCMCIA slot and a supplied
'PrepCard' App that allowed it to use a solid state PCMCIA RAM card,
this has been fashioned over time to allow the use of Smart Media,
CompactFLASH and the like as disk media, kinda useful on a machine with
only an 880k floppy drive, although the very presence of PCMCIA means
you could probably hang a LAN card on it if you got the right one!

Back to the subject It's almost getting to producing a hybrid
between PDA style RAM oriented systems and laptop hardware.
