Re: A question about copeland

2005-07-21 Thread Joey Sager
Copland. I remember it well.
Copland was a leak.

Apple Computer was calling their project of OS 8.0 Copland in reference to a
musician. OS 7 users wanted a new look to their operating systems, and someone
said that's what OS 8 was going to be about. Nobody realized the power of
multi-tasking yet. At least, nobody I knew.

What started to happen was really just icons, mostly. People started building
and circulating icons that you could either HexEdit into the system, or just
add to the folder icon.

Were you looking for the actual OS 8? That's not public domain yet, so we
can't *legally* share.

I have a collection of my old Copland icons around somewhere.

Hi.

Sorry, I do not have any particular link for you. Maybe you'll find
something on Google...
I noticed two different spellings of the name.
Apparently Apple's OS project was called Copland after composer
Aaron Copland.

Wikipedia explicitly states:

Note that the composer Aaron Copland spells his name without an e.
Apple Computer also spelled the name of their Copland project without
an e.

Surprisingly, however, a quick google search turns out 230.000
results for Apple Copeland, only 62.000 for Apple Copland
Maybe it's just because Copeland is the more common family name...
Still, some articles speak of the Copeland project, some of Copland

Really? Not sure where you're coming from, there. I built a PC for myself and
used all 5 PCI slots, 3 CD bays, 3 hard drive bays, and a floppy drive bay.

One thing that offends me about the Power Macintosh's right now is that there
is only 1 CD bay and 3 PCI ports. I mean, 1 CD drive? With optical media
standards changing as fast as they have in the past 3 years, you will need to
upgrade and then what? Throw out the old drive?

And they did it again in the PowerPC

I have one of the Apple cards in my closet. Not sure what to do with it
because it won't plug into my 6116 without that 90 degree converter. It also
hooks up to your CD-audio and (I think) it had a PC monitor output port.

Re: Mac LC

2005-05-27 Thread Joey Sager
Matt,
My high school used LC's for our web browsers (back in 2001) and they worked
fine. I was sitting at one back when I read the announcement on Apple.com
about the new iMac. Some stores (Micro Center) may even still sell old
serial compatable modems at 56k.
I would recommend maxing out the memory (10 MB) and putting a 700 MB SCSI hard
drive in the system with OS 6.0.8 or 7.5.1.

Joe

Hi Matt,

THe LC isnt a total piece of junk, they can be quite useful. (But then
again, I say that about just about every Mac I come across). I tend to
find my old software on eBay, but you sound like you have everything to
cover basic operation already.
First place to go is Jag's House website. He has a ton of software for
older systems (including that poor little SE you have on the floor) and he
will sell you a CD that I personally would be lost without.
There is also Gamba's website, another excellent place, and Mac512's site.
You can't go wrong at either place. :)

Your LC can take a ethernet card, if it doesnt already have one, and
cannect to the net. I wouldn't suggest Web with it, but you CAN do IRC,
FTP, and email with it just fine. And if you have a modem, you can make it
into a nice little FAX.

But to answer your question, head over to Jag's and take a look. :)

I was recently given a Mac LC, by a friend, after
his wife, and Educator, was unsuccessful in donating
it to a local school district.  I was advised by my
friend that it is a total piece of junk, and not to
expect anything worthwhile off of it.
I read the reviews on it, and I think I understand
it's limitations.  I fired it up, and found it has Ms
Works, Quicken, Appleworks, Simcity, and a few other
programs running under 6.07.  Oh, it also has AOL
version 2, but I doubt it will run on the internet.
I can use it for wordprocessing and basic
 financial bookkeeping.
It certainly is better than the SE I have sitting
on my floor-also given to me for free.

Question: where does one find software for an old Mac?
This machine, of course, only has one floppy drive.

 Thanks,

 Matt

I had a collection of over 200 old Macs. Last year, I gave away about
130 of them to a teenager in an affluent suburb. When I was unloading
the truck, his mom came out. I figured uh oh, did he tell his mom this
was coming? She came over and watched us unload for a few minutes,
then thanked me and said He's gonna love playing with these, and it
will keep him off the streets. Phew!

It's getting to the point that any beige (or should I say platinum,
since they're not really beige) Macs are hard to give away!

I still have a boatload of compact Macs and other oddball workgroup
servers and other odd iterations that I'll be purging this spring, if
anyone's interested. I live in northeastern Illinois.

Re: free Mac SE (sort of)

2005-05-16 Thread Joey Sager
Man, I'd love it, but I just coaxed myself out of giving up my old Mac SE.
It's a great computer, and ran super-fast when I ran the system off an external
Zip 100 drive!

I should recommend that you wrap the entire computer in large bubble wrap and
pack with bubble wrap or packing peanuts (if possible). Remember that ground
shipping companies like UPS won't accept a package packed with newspapers,
because it's just NEVER a good idea.

Hi everyone,

I was trying to rehab my Mac SE by putting a 1.4 floppy into it
  but figured
out the ROMs are too old (86 or so).  In the process I went and dropped the
20 MB
internal hard disk  so much for those data files!

anyhow, I got the data I needed off my 100 MB hard drive and have decided to
give this sucker away.  So here's the stats

Mac SE (still works)
4 MB of memory
800 K floppy
1.4 SuperDrive
keyboard (large one)
trackball
Cirrus 100 MB drive in external case (formatted, not bootable, no system
folder)
all the cables
spare internal power supply

I'd like $20 (for the new 1.4 floppy) plus shipping and handling (any
suggestions on how to
ensure safe shipping?)

first e-mail I get or in the case of multiples, a round of rock, paper,
scissors  :)

Re: Iigs info?

2005-04-23 Thread Joey Sager
Whoa -- was it a Woz edition? Nice.

Apples often don't have fans. Check your older powerbooks. No fan. Steve
Jobs prefers heat sinks and a minumum of fans because PC's are so loud.

Not sure on the sad sound.

IIgs had their own OS, and won't run the MacOS to the best of my knowledge.
After all, it's still an Apple II. I think it's OS was something like GS-OS.

Saw a Iigs at the local thrift today, monitorless.  When I turned it on, it

couldn't find a working fan in the puppy either.

Sound like it might be worth rescuing?  I have an ADB keyboard and an LC
monitor I could hook up.  Would I need System 6 on floppy?  Anything else?
Would the unhappy sound come from no OS disks, or is it possibly officially
borked?  How about fans... Shouldn't there be one of those?

Woz's signature was neat, at any rate.

Thanks!

Re: System 7.5 Question

I used to do that by making sure the file Finder was in some other folder
than the rest of the system files. You can move this when the computer is
already running from the system folder you are trying to modify.

easy as re-naming or putting in another folder.

Suggestions?
