 So I need a DIN8-DIN8 null-modem solution.  That seems to be the same as
 a printer cable on an old Mac.

I'm pretty sure a printer cable will work, I remember using it to directly
connect two macs in the past.  You should be able to run PPP on the G3 if
you're going that route.  Maybe Apple will add LocalTalk capability to
OSX.

compaq cdrom on IIci

I have an external Compaq 2x cdrom that worked on a IIsi, once upon a
time.  The IIsi is now long gone and I can't get the drive to work on a
IIci (or any of my compact macs).  It works fine on a unix box, and is
detected by scsiprobe and silverlining, however it won't mount any cd's,
either mac or iso9660.  I have the Apple CDROM Extension and the ISO9660
extension.  Do I need a specific extension/driver for the Compaq?  The
IIci is running system 7.5.
