Re: Mice Repair

2002-07-11 Thread Sam Burrish

Although some ARE really unsaveable, if you clean the ball and the axis
rotators (which may require a little careful scraping from gunk buildup)
they might still be useable. Replacing the slider material can be done in a
multitude of ways. Some use the fuzzy half of velcro. You can also
custom-cut plastic pieces and glue them in.

I find it also works well to soak the mouse balls in rubbing alcohol. That
will break down and remove any oil and help remove any other residue which
has embedded in the porous surface.

tried putting my copy of AppleWorks 5.0.3 on it but it

Personally, I find WordPerfect icky. Micro$oft totally mutilated Apple's

Here is a nice resource for a good selection of various freeware/shareware
word processing programs which should run fine on an '040:

Re: relatively foolish question

2002-07-06 Thread Sam Burrish

Yes, you will need all of the original software in order to make it work.
There is a booter application which you launch from inside the Mac OS which
switches you into PC mode, and the DOS card loads up DOS or Windows from
your PC partition.

Okay, I gotta ask this, as I haven't found any information about this:
exactly how do DOS cards in Macs work? I have two of them now, one with a
286 chip and one with a 386 chip. I can vaguely remember one of these back
in college, that seemed to do emulation and was extremely slow.

It isn't emulation, like with VirtualPC, as you aren't emulating PC
hardware, you are running actual PC hardware. The slowness is due to the
286/386 chips. They should number crunch DOS apps of the era fine, but don't
expect to run Windows XP.

Do they dual boot and you choose which OS to use? Do you need a second
monitor to see what's going on? It's not that I have a pressing need for
 these, but I am curious.

No, the Mac is still in control at all times. Even though the DOS card has
its own processor, ROM, RAM, bus, serial connectivity, and so on, it still
relies on the Mac's video and other on-board functions as well.

Re: External Speakers

2001-08-14 Thread Sam Burrish

There is no sound out from the TV tuner card or AV card. That's why Apple
has the 1/8 minijack on the motherboard.

Right. Oops. Those are definitely under two watts. You'll need an amp.

IOW, don't bother...just get a cheap set of amplified speakers. OfficeMax
often has rebates enough that you can get a really cheap set for the cost
 of a stamp.

Yeah, that's what I may end up doing. My original idea was to use some half
decent stereo speakers for watching movies and TV in bed. I see the MUG
Store has some nice amped speakers for a good price, with subwoofer too.
Maybe this is a happy ending after all.

Re: External Speakers

2001-08-13 Thread Sam Burrish

I used to have some stereo speakers that actually had an RCA jack built into
each one. Pretty strange. I tried hooking them directly into the sound out
of a computer (with a headphone jack to RCA cable), but there wasn't enough
power to drive the speakers at a useful volume.

Probably the result of impedance mismatch. Are the audio-out ports
 generally 4 ohm or 8 ohm ? Anybody ?

I'm guessing either way you have to go through some sort of stereo deck or
pre-amp.

LaCie FM Radio Tuner

2001-08-08 Thread Sam Burrish

Does anyone have the software/drivers for the LaCie FM Radio Tuner? I
checked VersionTracker, LaCie's web site, and download.com to no avail.

I would like to get mine functional again (it was hiding from me for quite
some time in the bottom of a box).

Thanks,
Sam
