Re: IIci Router (Was: [swap] WTB: Wired Router)

2003-02-06 Thread dustinr
 Yeah, uh, that's a LOT.

Well yes, it's a lot compared to a Linksys router. That's true. I could also
choose to not have internet service at all, which would save the electricty
used by my cable modem. Heck, I'll stop getting cable altogether, and get rid
of my televisions. Even better - if I quit my profession of being a programmer
and work as a librarian down the street, I can get rid of ALL my computers, and
just walk to work every day. Then I can sell my car! If I buy a bunch of extra
blankets and candles, I could stop heating my place and turn off the
electricity altogether!

Point is, anyone could take this to an extreme, and as a guy that IS conscious
of his environment, I have to weigh the things that make my life enjoyable
against their potential negative effects. I'm a computer hobbyist. In my
opinion, the relatively small amount of electricity I use is worth the benefits
of coming home after a long day of work and school and writing code for fun.
Some people come home and read a book. I sit down in front of a IIgs and write
assembly, or whatever else. Yes, I'm using electricity for no reason other than
to make my life slightly more enjoyable. But where do you draw the line between
doing what I do, and taking it to an absurd level as I illustrated above?

You mean like all the people driving SUVs and prolonging our dependence
 on
 foreign oil?

I don't drive an SUV. I'm also a member of GreenChoice for my energy needs:
http://www.electric.austin.tx.us/greenchoice/

Point is, I feel like I do what I can. Can I do more? Of course, but it's
always a constant battle to ride the line between what's reasonable and what's
not. I feel like what I do is reasonable. If you don't, well fine, but I'd bet
that you have energy consumption areas that can be cut back as well. The mere
fact that you're on a vintage Mac list indicates to me that you consume your
share of electricity for pleasure reasons too.

Re: cables

A lot of the older Sony, Radius, and SuperMac monitors - specifically the big
ones (19, etc..) - used the coaxial connections on the back. I have a Sony 19
monitor that uses those connectors.
