Re: IIci and A/UX

2004-08-06 Thread Kyle DePasquale
One of The CD drives is an apple 600i and the other one is a Sony
CDU76S. I started having the problems again with the cd read errors,
and it seems that the errors start after having the cd drive and hard
drive being on for over an hour. I just go from drive to drive, until
getting all of a/ux installed. It also appears that certain sectors of
the hard drive *may* be bad, because it kept making the hard drive
click at one point in the install. Lido did crash during a read test
when I got to certain blocks, but I wasnt sure if it was the hard drive
or just my mac spazzing out (which it often used to do). How can I
mark these sectors bad? or am I stuck with this hard drive being bad?
fsck in a/ux doesnt support the '-c' flag, or so it says, and I cannot
access the MAN pages for some reason, so that I can find the equivalent
flag.

I'll let you all know how the CPU card upgrade goes.

I have been watching this thread with interest as I have an IIci with
a 13 RGB and LaserWriter printer, all in pristine condition. I was
planning on installing AU/X on the system as soon as I had picked up
an in-era CD-ROM drive. The CPU upgrades are going to be pretty cheap
nowadays so its going to be worth getting one of them too.

Is there an in-era CD-ROM drive? I was thinking the Apple CD-ROM 150
with the caddy would probably be the closest thing available...

Okay. I got it to work, amazingly enough. Turns out that it was
partially the CD and partially the hard drive. The A/UX installer
does not like it when I use Lido to partition the hard drive. It
seems to only want its own formatting utility. I was reluctant to
use this, after reading many things online about how you should use
basically anything except for the A/UX partitioning utility, but it
seems to have worked fine for me. Also, the A/UX installer program
seems to work great on my faster CD drive when I burn the disc at a
speed of about 4x. I still get a few read errors, but they seem to
recover, whereas before the system would just hang or get a kernel
panic. If I burned the disc at an even lower speed, it probably
would stop the read errors entirely, and I will try that when I
install
A/UX on the other IIci.

Now for my next question: I posted before about using a sonnet
presto 040 with A/UX. It is a full 68040, not the 68LC040. How
would I go about testing if it is compatible with
A/UX? Do I just install its system extensions like I would in Mac
OS? or would it shut off once A/UX boots?

Thanks for all the help!

I highly doubt it as it would stop every standard Apple SCSI CD-ROM
drive (and everyone elses) in the world working with A/UX. I have
300i and 600i units here and neither has a sector sized jumper. It's
something I have only ever run into on MO drives.

Anyway, you might check for a sector size jumper and change it to
the other condition (installed/removed) and try again. It's a bit
of a long shot, but this is a problem that would show up on
multiple drives, because it's a configuration issue.

Keep in mind that I'm guessing.
The original Image that you are burning from may be damaged. I can
vouch for the fact that A/UX 3.01 will successfully install on a
IIci with a standard Apple CD-ROM drive, having done it myself.

Attack this logically:
It's not the hard disk, you've changed that.
It's not the CD Drive, you've changed that
It's not the IIci, you've changed that.
It's not the burn - you've redone that several times.
Check you are not doing something strange like burning the CD as a
Multisession disk, A/UX very likely doesn't support Multisession
CDs.

IIci and A/UX

2004-08-03 Thread Kyle DePasquale
I have been trying for the past few days to install A/UX 3.01 on one of
my Mac IIci machines. It works great except it keeps getting read
errors on what seems to be the CD drive (an apple 600i). I think this,
because I have tried using different hard drives, and keep getting the
same errors, which are Panic: No Root Filesystem and Disk read
c101d0s6 Error: Medium Error, code = 0x11. I have tried re-burning
the A/UX image, but to no avail. I even opened up the CD-ROM drive and
cleaned the laser, but again, it did not work. Any thoughts? Is it a
problem with the CD drive or could it be the SCSI controller?

Thanks,
Kyle

Re: IIci and A/UX

2004-08-03 Thread Kyle DePasquale
Okay, I tried it in a different IIci to see if it was the SCSI
controller - same issues as before. So I try a slower speed drive, non
apple of course, patch the boot floppy's CD driver with cd-sunrise, and
it works wonderfully...to a point. It says that it cannot upgrade the
system software on / and to erase the system software on the drive
and try again. I did that, and I am still getting the errors. So i
tried to do the customize instead of the easy install. It pauses
after saying the drive will be overwritten with the new system
software, and now I am getting CD read errors again. I even burned a
new A/UX cd at 4x instead of the regular 12x, but now it seems that it
is so slow that it will not even boot up fully into the installer.
Maybe that will help shed some light on what *could* be going on...it
seems that there should be a solution, because I was able to install
A/UX before with these machines.

Thanks again,
Kyle

2004-03-20 Thread Marco van de Voort
  Hi again!

I have a IIci with a Sonnet Presto 040 Processor
  upgrade. I was
wondering if A/UX supports the use of it.

Good question. Is it an LC040 or the regular 040 with
 FPU? A/UX requires an FPU.

A/UX does work with the Daystar 030 PowerCache
upgrades, so if the Presto won't mix with it, get a
 50Mhz 030 with FPU.

No guarantee.

NetBSD works with Daystar (030's and 040's), but not with presto.

Kernels need explicit support for these kind of devices (and in the case
with Daystar, this is done, though there were some cache utilisation issues)

So if you can't find a reference that A/UX supports it, assume it doesn't.

As far as I know, I don't believe that these upgrade cards were
supported through A/UX being the age of that kernel. I could be wrong,
but I think I remember reading on MK's site that it does supprt these cards.

It appears to be a regular 040, but I'm not sure. I don't want to take
off the heatsink to find out, because its glued on, and I don't want to
ruin it by accident. What's interesting about this one, is that it
appears to be a factory test one, but again, I'm not sure. It has no
serial number marked in the space, and it has a stamp on it that says
test. I wonder if that means anything.

why is it that when Macs get y2k bugs or when the lithium battery goes (
i assume its that) the clock turns itself back to January 1945? they
seem to have a unique way of counting... rather than going back to 1900...

my flatmate's LC II used to regularly say 1954 when he turned it on,
then he'd re-set, reboot and it'd be fine...

there was a day when i put in a CDR of sound files i'd burned on a PC
and when i read it into the mac they all came up as January 1945 or
something weird...

i wondered if it has something to do with the point at which small ints

Pretty much playing with it is all I wanted to do. I have a few IIcis a

Naturally all this can be hacked in, but it would take a lot of work.

Having said that, it is incredibly neat. It feels almost like having
 OS X
on your 68k Mac, minus all the eye candy. It even has a / drive on
 the
desktop. However, unlike OS X, it maintains nearly 100% compatibilty
 with
Mac OS fairly natively, right down to most control panels and
 extensions
 working.

About the only unfortunate thing is it acts like System 7.0.1 rather
 than
7.1.x. There were some software support changes between the two.

All in all, a cool thing to play with, but probably not very practical
 for
 making use of these days.

It was excellent. If they'd kept up development of it they'd have had

It's shame, that's for sure.

Excellent, yes. But expensive beyond belief (For an OS). By the time you

call it a draw. I remember the first OS 8 ads claiming

Yes, a shame that Apple tried to go in so many
directions at once in the immediate pre-Jobs Return
period. The direction of the company was a muddle,
practically every new Mac model had a completely
different design team and there was the madness of
creating different models based upon what software
shipped with them. Wasn't it Packard Bell that
started that dumb idea? I always called them

Re: OT: A/UX

2002-10-31 Thread Desert Fox
I wish I would have bought the Workgroup Server 95 instead of the Workgroup
Server 60 I bought way back when. I was steered away from the 95 due to it's
UNIX base and concern that the staff would be unable to handle crashes in my
absence. However, after running A/UX 3.1.1 on a Quadra 650 and that very
Workgroup Server 60 (which is a 25Mhz model with full 040), I am really
sorry that I didn't go that way.

It doesn't crash! And although AppleShare Pro isn't a speed daemon today, it
would have been great back then! Instead I dealt with AppleShare 4.0, System
7.1, and the assorted random crashes.

Now that I have these two A/UX 3.1.1 installations running on 040s with max
RAM and a 3.0.2 installed on a IICX with 80MB RAM, I think I will actually
be able to use them for menial tasks that they are perfect for. Heck if
nothing else, I've got a telnet terminal window available to watch packet
traffic on my router ports. Plus I get to play with a bunch of old software
that was collecting an equal amount of dust until recently. Remember Live
Picture? Wild program.

Bummer about A/UX is lack of 24 bit video support, making the Thunder IIGX
cards a regular slug instead of a rocket.

I'm in the process of getting all the Apache, BIND, and other apps I want to
pound on updated and running.

The old version of Retrospect (2.0Ci A/UX) probably works better than
Retrospect 5!

A/UX works in 24bpp with my 8*24*GC, but the GC control panel won't, so it's
really glacially slow. 16bpp is a better palette-speed compromise anyway.

Naturally all this can be hacked in, but it would take a lot of work.

Having said that, it is incredibly neat. It feels almost like having OS X
on your 68k Mac, minus all the eye candy. It even has a / drive on the
desktop. However, unlike OS X, it maintains nearly 100% compatibilty with
Mac OS fairly natively, right down to most control panels and extensions
working.

About the only unfortunate thing is it acts like System 7.0.1 rather than
7.1.x. There were some software support changes between the two.

All in all, a cool thing to play with, but probably not very practical for
making use of these days.

No, Basilisk does not currently emulate the MPU well enough for A/UX. MacOS
basically only uses the MPU for virtual memory; A/UX uses it for several
more (complicated) functions.

Note, that my info is about a month out of date, although I don't think that
the Basilisk team had any plans to support A/UX in the near term. Right now,
AFAIK they are trying to speed up FPU emulation and start writing a PPC
emulator.

Nope. A/UX requires virtual memory, which requires an
MMU. Basilisk II does not emulate an MMU. And that's
only one of the reasons why it can't run A/UX, but
it's enough. :)

Basilisk II is more of a Macintosh _simulator_ than
it is an emulator. The only hardware it emulates are
the CPU and FPU. Everything else is based on info
available on how a Mac is supposed to react when an
application or the System does specific things, then
Basilisk replies with the proper response.

That works very well on a computer designed to isolate
applications from direct interaction and control with
the hardware. The Macintosh was designed so that
programmers didn't need to know much about the
hardware. They mainly needed to know the API or
Application Programmng Interface. Apple would take
care of making sure each model of Mac would react
the same to the same commands from applicatons.

A big part of how they did that was to place a good
chunk of code that on other computers was in the OS,
into each Mac model's hardware specific ROM. That
way the System as installed could be generic enough
that when installed on one model of Mac it could
also easily work on many different models of Mac
without needing to be renstalled.

Another issue that tends to knck installinst A/UX or Linux or BSD in
the knees is you can't repartition the software 'hardfiles' in HD SC
Setup or Drive Setup (I tried on build 142 the latest PC Windows 2000
build) so you can't take a hardfile and build it into set of unix
drives. The only other way I can think of doing it is to use a separate
hardfile for each partition (usr, swap etc) and even that way there is
still no way to format each one in Unix format.

Apple still owns copyright on it and they have not released it. I suspect
there is some ATT proprietary code in the kernel that they do not have
rights to release freely (it's based on System V).

There are 2 offshore sites with A/UX.
I don't think that mentioning them would be a problem because the offshore

A/UX's CD-ROM driver, IIRC, is a very very very generic driver of the best

A/UX: some useful links and tips

2002-09-30 Thread MaX

Hi all,

Here you can found some links for A/UX:

 http://www.tecneeq.de/aux_links.html

Tips:

Q: I cannot configure the router (gateway) in MacTCP under A/UX 3.x.x
A: Two way to resolve it:

1. You may put the following line in the /etc/rc file:

/usr/etc/route add 0 192.168.1.1 1

The IP address of 192.168.1.1 is an example of a cisco router, while 1
is the number of hups to get to the router from a local machine.

2. Go in /etc/inittab and add at the end of the file :

jfw1:2:once:/usr/etc/route add default 192.168.1.254 /dev/syscon 2/1

save and execute init q

it's all folk.

Hi Terry,

you can freely download all from the archaic-apples.com server.
In my server there are the same images re-grabbed with linux in iso
format, so is easy to burn the CD from linux or windows.

But if you can burn from mac, please download all from
archaic-apples.com server.

here the links:

ftp://auxanon:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/

only a transfert for IP ad limit to 10 Mb/s

you can use netscape to do it, pasting this address in the navigator,
o user wget like:

# wget -c ftp://auxanon:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/
AUX_3.0.1_Install.toast_image.gz
(126 MB compressed GZ for a 400 MB installationCD)

# wget -c ftp://auxanon:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/
AUX_3.0.1_Install_Boot_Disk.diskcopy_image.bin
(1.44 MB floppy disk for diskcopy)

# wget -c ftp://auxanon:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/
AUX_3.1_Update.toast_image.gz
(19 MB SW update to 3.1)

(the links are splitted, you must to put it in a line)

Note that mac os cut the names due to the limit to 31 carathers.
I have download all images from linux, renamed ad burned from a old 8200
PowerMac.

Click File Burn Image. Change the list to All Files
so the .image files will show up. After selecting the
image there should be an HFS checkbox. Leave all
the other options as-is. Then burn DAO or Disk At Once
mode.

I made a set of the CDs but I haven't tried installing
it on my IIci because I'd have to remove the Turbo
601.
On of the discs came out with very few files showing
for the size of the image. Dunno if it's screwed up
or if there's another track with all the unix type
files that Mac OS can't see?

I need a SCSI CD-RW drive. :P I have two 4x SCSI
Panasonic 7502W burners. They can't read CD-RW discs,
just pressed CDs and CD-R.

Too bad I can't find a SCSI one like the IDE ones I
snagged off a clearance table at Staples. $40 each for
40/12/48x with BurnProof (Buffer Underrun Proof) and
SmartBurn automatic burn speed adjustment. :)
They're the Lite-On LTR-40125S model.

Re: A/UX...is free?

2002-09-29 Thread Smith Family

I am trying to burn it on a Windoze machine. I noticed that Aladdin Expander
can decompress gzip files. Once I do that, can Nero burn the resulting
.image file and write the disc copy image to a floppy? Also, what should I
do with the update? Should I just burn it on another CD?

so if someother want it, please share it in your world zone... i'm

30 pin SIMMS (Was: A/UX...is free?)

2002-09-29 Thread Frank P. Eigler

You might want to contact Mike Ripca [EMAIL PROTECTED]. He's often selling
exactly this on the LEM Swap List. $30 for a matched set of 4 IIRC.

I got two sets a while back. My IIci loves 'em -)

Re: more A/UX

2002-09-29 Thread Dana Sibera

On Monday, September 30, 2002, at 04:03 AM, /dev/null wrote:

i gather it runs fine on 030's... which i have one of... but it would
 be
nice to try it on the powerbook...

Unfortunately Apple developed a/ux for only a subset of machines made -
mainly those that could be used as servers, which leaves out every
powerbook (even with FPUs). The ability to run on the hardware isn't
there. Same with the 660AV and 840AVs with their different architecture.

The relevant bit from the FAQ though, is:

G.02) What's the minimum system I need (CPU, disk and RAM) to run A/UX?

A/UX 3.0 works on the MacII (with PMMU _or_ 68030 upgrade with FDHD
ROM's
installed), IIx, IIcx, IIci, IIfx, SE/30, IIsi (with 68882 chip) and the
Quadra 700|900|950 computers. A/UX 3.0.1 (and later) adds support for
the
Q800 and Centris Machines (the Centrises _must_ have the real 68040
w/FPU -
See QA #G.03). A/UX will run on the Quadra 610 and 650s (recall that
A/UX
requires the _real_ 68040 chip!) with a little bit of work.

A/UX will NOT run on the PowerMacs, any AV machines, any PowerBooks (or
portables), the LCs, the Duos, the ClassicII, the Q605 or on the Quadra
630... It is recommended that you NOT run A/UX 3.1.1 on the II, IIx,
IIcx or
SE/30 machines, since their MacOS-compatibility is unreliable under
3.1.1.

Recall that A/UX _is_ UNIX and thus contains some very hardware specific
drivers. It's for this reason (and not Apple not doing things
correctly) that
A/UX won't work on newly released platforms. To support a new platform,
at
least _some_ work (and possibly extensive work in some cases) must be
done.

be well :)

Use RAWRITE for DOS to write the boot disk image
to a floppy. That comes with most Linux distros.

Stick with an 030 system with an FPU. The best Mac
it can run on is the IIfx. It will not work on an
040 or PowerMac. As for RAM, as much as you can
stuff in the box. :)

Stick with an 030 system with an FPU. The best Mac
it can run on is the IIfx. It will not work on an
040 or PowerMac. As for RAM, as much as you can
 stuff in the box. :)

Should you want to run it on a Mac that isn't a
IIfx, the DayStar 030 PowerCache line of CPU upgrades
work with A/UX. :) A IIci with a 50Mhz upgrade
should be a pretty nice A/UX box.

witch kind of machine is fast enougth for a/ux?
and how much ram is needed?

depending on what you want to do - most of the 030 and 040s with FPUs
will run it fine. I have a Quadra 700 with 20mb that boots and runs it
well, and runs macOS apps quite well also - however I haven't done a
great deal with the pure A/UX side of it. It's certainly not a gigantic
ram hog.

The FAQ may answer a few questions about it: see

Isn't OS X Server v1 essentially Rhapsody? OS x Server v1 is quite

Yup - it is. I've used Rhapsody DR1 and DR2 and to be honest there
are some things I fell sic kthat didn't make it into OS X 10.0. I
have a buddy running server 1.2 (the last version of Rhapsody) on his
PowerMac G3. It has a so called 'Blue Box' environment for running
Classic Apps that just boots OS 8.6 full screen in the foreground and
you have to shut it down to get back to Rhapsody, most awkward. You
can see why classic was introduced as a layer in OS X 10.0.

Anyway -this i veering wildly off topic so as a vein attempt to guide
it back to such position:

If you ask me A/UX is much better integrated between Mac Apps and
A/UX Apps than even OS X - it's practically seamless as far as I can
see, until you need X-Windows, then you have to reboot or something -
dunno never got that far.

It's not really step by step but it may help.

Of course, this is really better off in MaX where we have hardly any

A/UX Stage II

2002-04-26 Thread Mark Benson

Well I sorted the problem with the installer not booting, the boot
disk had an error on it, right in the middle of the A/UX Installer
Startup application. Cut a new floppy on my 7300 and all is good.

I installed A/UX all fine and well but it refuses to work with my CD
drive as it's not an Apple drive. I know it works with the CD-ROM
5.3.1 INIT but I don't know how to get A/UX to load that on booting
into the A/UX'd Mac OS. I need the CD Drive to do the 3.1 update,
unless I AppleTalk it of another Mac but having a functioning CD
Drive would be a general bonus anyway.

The other thing is how do I configure all the server services, do
they have MacOS tools or are they all text file based?

Lastly, are there any archives of pre-compiled A/UX software? I am
useless at compiling stuff and also didn't install any of the
programming tools.

into the A/UX'd Mac OS.

Oh, and thanks to Cam. K. for his simple instructions, most useful :).

Re: A/UX Stage II

2002-04-26 Thread Cameron Kaiser

Please, please, move this into MaX list! Others will benefit! :-)

Very simple. Assuming you have not configured users to have individual
System Folders, boot A/UX and go into the System Folder on / (not on the
MacPartition or on any other MacOS partitions). Place your INITs, CDEVs,
etc., into the Extensions folder there.

Please be very careful about this, as 32-bit dirty INITs may very likely
cause you to be *unable* to get back into A/UX. I found this out the
hard way with the 8*24*GC CDEV. You'll have to undergo the harrowing
experience of rooting around in the Launcher shell.

The other thing is how do I configure all the server services, do
they have MacOS tools or are they all text file based?

They are typically text file based. Make sure inetd is starting (it's
enabled by switching it on in /etc/inittab, I think). Then modify
/etc/inetd.conf -- warning: it isn't terribly current in its format.

Lastly, are there any archives of pre-compiled A/UX software? I am
useless at compiling stuff and also didn't install any of the
 programming tools.

Naughty.

ftp.mayn.de had a few on their jagubox mirror.

A/UX Problem

2002-04-25 Thread Mark Benson

I'm trying to install 3.0.1 on my IIci. I have an external Apple CD300
(borrowed form my 840av) hung on the machine in a jury rig and it
definitely works. I boot the machine form the A/UX Boot Install floppy
and it just brings up a blank desktop with no drives or anything and
nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

You do have the CD in the CD drive, right? (Just checking :-)

How much memory is installed in the IIci?

I don't *think* so but just to point out, my A/UX IIci has 24MB in it.
With 30-pin RAM being so cheap I'd put some more in it anyway, whether or
not you get A/UX running.

A/UX site...

2001-10-02 Thread Adam

Hi,

Once in my extensive collection of miscellaneous bookmarks, I had the URL to
a site which had A/UX for download in addition to some good pages about it.
If I remeber correctly, the URL or title contained the word bottle or
something...

Does anyone know where this site is?

Cheers,
Adam

Lots of good A/UX info is on jagubox.nasa.gov IIRC. There might be another
domain in there somewhere but I know googling for jagubox will probably
find it.

Don't know about the download site.

A/UX

2001-08-18 Thread Terry Mathews

A/UX has been brought up on several occasions recently as The UNIX to use
on m68k. While this may not be completely true, it is the only UNIX that
has Classic support on 68k machines. As a matter of fact, it runs 7.0.1 with
the update. :-)

http://www.faqs.org/faqs/aux-faq/ This will answer a lot of questions about
A/UX.

It's hard to tell whether you should run A/UX, NetBSD, or Linux-m68k. If you
can get by with Apple-standard protocols like AppleTalk (There is an Apache
webserver port), use A/UX. If you need more open-source programs things are
a little tougher to decide on. You could try to port to A/UX (According to
the FAQ, gcc and make exist), or you're left with NetBSD and Linux. It's my
understanding that NetBSD is desireable over Linux-m68k unless NetBSD
doesn't support your hardware.

Terry
