Re: A question about copeland

2005-07-21 Thread Allan Hunter
Actually, Copland was an entire OS architecture that never saw the
light of day. It was to run on a Unix-like nanokernel called
NuKernel. It was to have partially protected memory (with some code
areas still allowing read-write access by applications - something
about "re-entrant code", I don't remember the details), and huge
chunks of the low-level operations were to be executed as threads
that would multitask preemptively in the background.

And yes, it was to have a more modern sleeked-up user interface,
which DID in fact get rolled out eventually in MacOS 8. But most of
the really big architectural changes of Copland got cancelled, along
with the roadmap to the next iteration, Gershwin, which was to be a
pure preemptive multitasking / protected memory OS.

Aside from the user interface, which was called "Platinum", the only
parts of Copland to make it into the MacOS were Finder threads (under
System 7 you could not do anything once a file copy had started,
until it was completed; in MacOS 8 for the first time you could start
multiple simultaneous file copy operations, empty the trash while
they were running, and switch to another app while the Finder
finished up its file operations); oh, and perhaps Open Transport,
that might've originated as part of Copland, I'm not sure.

Re: A question about copeland

2005-07-21 Thread Joey Sager
Copland. I remember it well.
Copland was a leak.

Apple Computer was calling their project of OS 8.0 "Copland" in reference to a
musician. OS 7 users wanted a new look to their operating systems, and someone
said that's what OS 8 was going to be about. Nobody realized the power of
multi-tasking yet. At least, nobody I knew.

What started to happen was really just icons, mostly. People started building
and circulating icons that you could either HexEdit into the system, or just
add to the folder icon.

Were you looking for the actual OS 8? That's not public domain yet, so we
can't *legally* share.

I have a collection of my old Copland icons around somewhere.

Re: A question about copeland

2005-07-20 Thread Niels Bretschneider

Hi.

Sorry, I do not have any particular link for you. Maybe you'll find
something on Google...

I noticed two different spellings of the name.
Apparently Apple's OS project was called "Copland" after composer
Aaron Copland.

Wikipedia explicitly states:

"Note that the composer Aaron Copland spells his name without an "e."
Apple Computer also spelled the name of their Copland project without
an "e"."

Surprisingly, however, a quick google search turns out 230.000
results for "Apple Copeland", only 62.000 for "Apple Copland"

Maybe it's just because "Copeland" is the more common family name...
Still, some articles speak of the "Copeland" project, some of "Copland"

regards,

Niels
