Well, as far as I know, most of the LC II's parts date back to 1991. And we
all know that when it comes to high technology, a year is worth a century...

By the way, I've had a hard time searching for Italian System 7.1 disk
images lately, but it seems they're unavailable over the WWW, even at Apple.
Any clues?

No, the clips were not damaged.
Hmmm... those clips are not that strong, I have also known them to wear

Why, thank you.

Eureka! Thank you Mikael, your advice has been very helpful! I took the
motherboard out and there was nothing wrong with it actually. Once I put it
back in and booted, the ADB port worked properly again. I guess something
inside must have gotten loose, although I couldn't figure out exactly what
or how.

That was my first Macintosh. I was very happy with it for many
years.

I had that problem once, also appearing now and then, suddenly, after
functioning normally for a while, and that time it really was the
keyboard (which proved unfixable, but I have plenty of them). You write
that the keyboard has been verified, but let me ask: is it possible for
you to try the LC II with a different set of ADB cable, keyboard and
mouse? And it still locks up?

The motherboard of an LC II comes out easily. Perhaps you should try
taking it out and replacing it again, and see if you can get the ports
aligned correctly.

I could give you a replacement motherboard, but you'd have to pick it
up in Stockholm or Uppsala - perhaps you have friends here who could get
it for you?

/Mikael

It's rare when an ADB port goes out.

More likely your trouble may be a memory-related one. OR, power supply. or
CPU.

Have you tried starting the LC II with the extensions off? That is, holding
down the shift key on the keyboard while it starts..

Jeff

Hardware problems with LC II

2003-12-05 Thread Excitable Boy
Hello, this is my first post.

I'm from Italy and I own a Macintosh LC II with System 7.1: yes, it's very
slow, but it works quite fine. Except for one thing, which is of crucial
importance... the ADB port. It would be rather sad if I had to trash my old
Mac just because that small port won't work.

After starting up, if I move the mouse the pointer moves as well. But after
one minute it freezes, and so does the keyboard. There's nothing left for me
to do but shut it all down. Even starting up again won't help. Damn!!!

This problem has surfaced only mere weeks ago. When I looked at the back of
the LC II, I noticed that the ports (inside) and the holes in the plastic
board (outside) did not coincide, and I thought this might be the cause.
Thus I lifted the lid and looked inside, but I couldn't fix anything.

The keyboard is all right (I have verified that myself), so it could be that
the ADB port has worn out. Is there something I can do to bring my LC II
back to life, or is it lost forever?

Thanks a lot.
