I have zapped the pram with both the key combination and by removing the
battery. Its tough to get to on a CX.
In any case the clock retains whatever I've entered into it as the current
time, but it never moves anywhere. So I'm guessing that the clock chip
itself isn't working.
If you're in or near Austin, TX, I'd be happy to provide an exchange
IIcx motherboard. I have a box of about 20 of them. It's probably
not worth the cost to ship (and I have no way of testing them to be
certain I was shipping a working one) but if you're in the area
you're welcome to email me and come by. I have them because each
one has an 85C30 and a 53C80 chip on it which I have a use for.
Your faulty board would serve that purpose for me as well as one of
these, presumably working, boards.

Have you tried Techtool from Micromat, the same folks who made MacEKG.
Snooper is no longer sold, but parts seem to have been incorporated
into the latest version of Norton Utilities, 3.2.1 came from this page
http://homepage.mac.com/schrier/faq.html while Peace of Mind was just to
hard to search for. Would MacCheck or tattletech be of any use?

Does this faulty board still keep the date correct even thought the
clock appears stuck on the one set time? Have you zapped the pram with a
key combo, utility or simply removing and replacing the pram battery
after some time out of the machine.
Your the second person this year that I can recall having this problem
with the clock. :(

The versions of Techtool I've seen seem to be PowerPC only. Now there may
be an old 68k version running around that I haven't seen, but that was a
show stopper for me. I'll have to check the faq link you posted there,
because maybe they know where to get a copy.

I've version 1.1.7 which runs on 68k machines and is freeware and can be
found with lots of other useful stuff at
http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/71more.html the earlier link is a chip
clocking page for 030's and above and really only mentions what happened
to MacEKG.

Thats a shame, remove the time + date control panel and you wouldn't
know the problem existed.(hopefully) Might be worth replacing time and
date just to be sure but if your using the same hard drive between the
two boards I guess it proves the control panel to be working properly.

It would be good if you found a utility that identified a problem with
some part of the hardware. Maybe someone has a suggestion for gettting
time of another networked machine via software, this might not help you
depending on your setup.

Good luck

Well, I wanted to let everyone know that I tried thee IIcx's twin brother
out (same hard drive, memory, etc.) and it worked fine. It must have been
the clock chip on that motherboard. Now I don't know what to do with the
first one.

The sad part is I was reading in a book called Fix Your Own Mac by Jan L.
Harrington that at one time there were diagnostic programs sold that could
check that chip amongst others. They're long gone, but some of the names
were MacEKG, Snooper, and Peace of Mind. Anyone know where one could get
a copy of one of those programs for a 68k Mac?

Just having good suspision of the clock chip would be enough to replace it
for me...
If you have a field strenght meter or some other way to check the crystal on
the clock circuit might reveal that the crystal is the culprit also...
perhaps replace both to be safe. I am sure they are cheap enough as long as
you order them from a second source rather than using Mac parts...
Check your friends junk box and you might get lucky!
