I've learned the hard way not to trust the system installed on a donated
computer. Now I always erase the hard drive and either do a fresh install
(System 7 and below) or a copy of a previous fresh install (because
installing OS 8 or later takes so long!).

Apple gives away System 7.5.3 (and the 7.5.5 update), so you are pretty
safe putting that on a giveaway computer. But it is rarely the best
choice for the end user, so I ignore the legalities and do what I think
is right.

You say you are making a web site and will charge something for the
computers. I recommend you just give them away free and don't do any
publicity.

That¹s a good point. Every Mac I've taken in has had the original OS on it
that originally came with it, but only two have come with the CD's
associated with that OS. I'm way too lazy to read the license agreements,
and wouldn¹t understand it even if I did. What exactly are the rules for
this sort of situation? Do I have to have original OS disks for every
computer I sell? Or, as I have disks for every OS from 7.6.1 to OS X, does
that cover ME for every computer that comes in and goes out?

Just be sure that for any Mac on which you install
a System version NOT downloadable from Apple, you have
at least original disks or CDs for.

I've not yet heard of cases where Apple has dropped
a ton of lawyers on people installing non-free
System or Mac OS versions willy-nilly, but you
never know...

On the other side, Microsoft has launched lawyers at
schools, thrift shops and charitable orgs for not
having a Certificate of Authenticity and original
media (even if the PC never shipped with actual
OS install media) for each and every PC they have.
In one instance, MS offered to sell a school Windows
2000 licenses for half price. Nevermind that the
PCs the school had were doing good to run Win95. :P

Better safe than sorry!

Macs For Kids

2003-08-25 Thread Scott Howe
Hi All,

I just wanted to make it known to the community that I have started a
program called Macs For Kids. Essentially what this is is a program whereby
I take in donations of mostly older Macs, but, of course, any Mac will be
appreciated, and refurbish it for sale to caretakers of young children for a
very nominal fee (roughly half of what the current value of the particular
machine is). Educational institutions who have a need will get any and/or
all systems free of charge. Any profits from this service will go into a
fund to purchase a goal of at least one eMac per year to be donated to a
needy school.

I got the idea to do this when my young daughter (2 1/2 years old) became
enamored by an old 7500 I had lying around. I fixed it up for her, installed
some educational typing games, and off she went. She is starting at a
Montessori school next week that uses Macs exclusively and I¹m proud to say
that she will be way ahead of her class when it comes to knowing the basics
of Mac computing!

So, I feel that in this age of funding cutbacks for just about everything we
have taken for granted for years, I wanted to do my part to give something
to the community I live in. Anyone who lives in the Boston area who has a
Mac that is just sitting around (admittedly, that will be very few of YOU!)
and wants to see it get some use, please consider donating it to Macs For
Kids. I am in the process of getting non-profit status for the program, so
there will be tax deductions available for anyone who does decide to donate.

I am in the process of finishing up the website, which will be
www.macsforkids.com. In the meantime, anyone with interest please email me
at [EMAIL PROTECTED] I really appreciate all inquiries.

Thank you,

Scott Howe
