Yeah, we all have over 100 machines on a lan and
 cant use a tcp
control panel to check. They will remind you if
 another machine is
 already using that address.

If you setup a BootP server for that LAN, then you
can centrally administer IP addresses based on the
MAC number of each computers network interface.
That way you get the benefits of having the same IP
on each system all the time without having to
physically go to any system to change its IP if you
need to. :)

Now where can I find a BootP system process for
Windows 2000 Pro...

Caller ID Software (was Re: SE/30 uses)

2004-10-26 Thread Steve

Douglas' post got me thinking. My MacTV is just used as, well, a TV. It
would be nice if it would pick up Caller ID numbers and speak them (or speak
a name/phrase from a database). Is there any kind of packaged stuff out
there for this kind of thing?

Thanks.

For a while the SE/30 also used its serial port to record caller-ID data from the

Hey guys,
Thanks for all your help so far trying to get this old Mac IIci online.
I think I solved the Asante nubus card not being recognized by running the
IIci through a Linksys switch. It appears to light up on the router. My next
question is under the TCP/IP screen it says:

Connect via: Ethernet
Configure: Manually
IP Address: 192.168.1.9
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Router addrses: 192.168.1.1
Name server addr: ?
Search Domains:?
Is this correct or do I just set Connect via: Using DHCP server?
I'm lost.
Thanks again.

You'll need the name server, either 192.168.1.1 or the DNS server
address from your ISP, on mine its the same as the gateway or router
address.

DHCP may well be easier for you. Depends on your setup or routers setup.

Would it not be easier and cheaper to install Netatalk on the RH box.
You can then point both Samba and Netatalk shares at a common folder.
If the older macs are all ethernet equiped they will be able to share
the same lan/folder with OS X and windows. Both the classic macOS, OS
X and windows will be able to connect via internet amongst others if
you wish.

There are several chat clients for all platforms, Hotline would be one
ICQ would be another, ect Just a costless thought.

cheers

Macs work better with a static address. No ifs, buts or maybe's but if
you dont mind the wait... a long one if the routers down or off or you
move the mac... then dhcp is for you.
---
Well, I only have 10 at any one time, but I am frequently plugging
new acquisitions into the network to play with them and am just
not organized enough to make a list or establish some sort of
protocol to assign numbers to them. I have a stack of 40 or so
that I have plugged into the network at various times over the
last 3 or 4 years to move files around for archive purposes.

My Linksys router and Graphite Airport seem to manage OK.

SE/30 uses

2004-10-19 Thread Andy Palmer
Hi all,

I've recently acquired a SE/30 8Mb with ethernet card and am considering various
options to put it to use:

1. Mail server
Are there any mail servers that will run on System 6.0.8? If so am I limited to a POP3
server? Are there any IMAP mail servers that will run on either System 6 or System 7?

2. Web server
What version of MacHTTP will run on System 6.0.8? Any software recommendations for
setting up the SE/30 as a web server?

3. Email client
Are there any available IMAP email clients that will run under System 7.5?

If anyone has any thoughts/suggestions on any of the above options it would be great
to hear from you.

Thanks
Andy.

or are you asking how far you can go w/SE30? ie.What
can I do w/ this really powerfull machine (color 2nd
