Too late but thanks for the info. I fully expect the response from Best
Data would be 'no, we do not recommend using US products on other phone
systems' which means it works but they can't be bothered to support it.
I got the USR modem in the end, the tech guy was adamant it would work
on anything I threw it at, the script he mentioned was even in the
OT/PPP 1.0 package, although I don't know if it will run at 56k from
that CCL, but I have the 56k CCL just in case :).

Thanks for all your help but it really is better for warranty
reasons/customs etc. that I buy a UK modem. Not to mention replacing the
power brick, I don't think USR bricks are proprietary either BTW, I
looked the power input spec up and it's just a standard 9.2V transformer
from what I could tell. Soon find out :).

Oh, foo. Isn't the UK phone system somewhat not
sympatico with modems made for the USA? I've seen
some PC-Card modems for laptops that will work
pretty much anywhere. (Even a USR 28.8 with X-Jack
from Scotland that a snotty USR tech support b!tch

brand modems have the X-Jack.)

Hmmm, if it'll work, you could have someone over here

ship it over bundled in a box of something duty free

macwarehhouse.com has a BestData external for Mac
for a bit under $60. Model 56SX-2/56SX-2-MAC. Works
with PC also. They used to have a picture of the
wrong modem on the page, now they have a picture
of the _box_ for the wrong modem. :P It's actually
identical looking to the $89 56SPX-2/56SPX-2-MAC
which is the next model up with Voice features
added to the FAX and modem.

The cheap one comes with a Mac serial cable and
some software. I bought mine to use with my PC. :)
Just use a different cable and download the .inf
 file from BestData.

I've yet to find anyone, even the PC side of
the warehouse at microwarehouse.com selling the
56SX-2 for PC. They only sell the more expensive
 56SPX-2 version.

Two letters, UK. :).

Nice try but we also use different power outlet sockets at 240VAC to you

If you can dig up the modem init string for it, probably yes.

There is a US Robotics Universal script in OT/PPP that the guy at USR

Usually easy to find one. Get the Win9x .inf file
for the modem (preferably localized for your country)
and open it in a text editor. Search for CR and
you'll find at least one init string. Copy that
to the Mac without the CR and it will get things
going. Tweakage of the string may be needed. ;)
If all else fails just try ATF1 or ATF1D1

Of course it will. Any modem will do. Modems are pretty generic.

Modems that are supposed to be not supported in the Mac can be made so
by generating a modem script. There is a program on Apple's ftp-site for
that.

I actually tried that on my 7500 a while back (when I first stepped into
the world of Macs) with an ELSA MicroLink 56k Serial modem and never got
it to work. I am pretty sure this on e will though. CCLs work on any
version of OT/PPP or ARA don't they? I'm just wanting to make really
sure because It's £65 inc pp and I don't want to have to make up an
excuse to send it back to MacWarehouse when it doesn't work.

Getting it to work with IPNR will not be too hard I hope crosses all
his limbs :)

A few PC-specific modems simply cannot be made to work on Macs. USR is a
good manufacturer, however, and should work fine. One note: £65 is a bit
pricey for a 56K serial modem.

Find me a cheaper on in the UK that is guaranteed to work on a Mac from

I am planning to buy a bit stuff at once (mac to VGA adapter and a new
Mac DB-25 to Din-8 Modem cable as it's a PC modem package) which will
take the lot up to around £76 in total. Looks like the IIci might go on
