Upload vs. Download

2001-09-05 Thread Andrew Michael MacTao

Hello All,
Just a curious question... One that has always puzzled me. Does
anyone know the specifics, why uploading a file to a server takes so
much longer than downloading the same file?

Cheers,
Andrew

Well, Internet providers often give you more download bandwith than
upload bandwith. e.g. the intenet-by-cable connection in my office
gives me 512 kb download and only 128kb upload.

Because with a "56K" connection your upstream
connection maxes out at 33.6kbit/second.

The new v.92 standard raises the upstream speed
to 48kbit/sec. You need a v.92 modem and your
ISP must also upgrade their equipment to v.92.

Are you on a 56K modem by any chance? They're limited to 33.6 upstream.

Most DSL and cable modem plans have lower upstream bandwidth than downstream.

This tends to work pretty well in most cases because people tend to
download a lot more than they upload.

Only V.90. V.92 modems support 56k both ways

Right, but do you know of anyone with a V.92 ISP? :) Heck, I don't even
know of any V.92 Mac modems other than maybe a few new USB ones...
