You have to sign up with Audio Galaxy and create an account. You can
make a stand alone account or you can link your Facebook account with
it and that creates your account. Once you do that, from your mac or

additional folders, you need to right-click the helper from the

Do you have a bluetooth keyboard active at all? I can tell you that if you
have a bluetooth keyboard paired and if you press something on the keyboard
to wake it up then it will bypass the lock screen and do what you are
describing. Maybe make sure bluetooth is off. I hope it is not that sms bug
virus thing that is possibly out there where a phone can be compromised and
controled by the person that did it. It sounds like for whatever the reason
that some process is activating at times you are not aware of the reason
for. Maybe make sure your app switcher is cleared out? Put it in airplane
mode and test for a period if it stops happening when in airplane mode? If
it does then it is being initiated by a network connection or something
communicating by one of the radios such as bluetooth.

Sharon, after you've chosen the format of the book you wish, did you choose Add
to Cart? If you did you should be taken to a screen which shows the book
you've selected, quantity and price. You can either continue shopping or
proceed to check out. Now I encountered a problem in completing my order, as I
forgot my password, and my cart was emptied when I tried to re-order.
Fortunately, I wrote down my password, so I was able to complete my order for
the book. Good luck.

The iPhone keeps getting better!

This second edition contains new information since
the release of iOS5 in October 2011, including the remarkable voice
assistant Siri. Getting Started with the iPhone walks you through exploring
and learning to use your iPhone in detail. You will learn how to set up your
phone, load and back up music, contacts, etc., use the built-in apps and buy
more! It includes an extensive reference sheet and the appendices include
all the gestures used to operate the phone, as well as troubleshooting tips
and a list of resources to help you learn more.

Most of the book is also relevant for iPod Touch
users. iPad screen layouts, on the other hand, are different enough that
many of the details described will not apply, but information about
configuring the iPhone and using the gestures will still be helpful. Look
for our new book on the iPad this summer.

VizWiz Update May have a Bug?

2012-04-26 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hi Folks,

With all of the other updates to "VizWiz," I have never had an issue with
it. So, I am wondering if anyone else is having this issue. When I go to
open the app, the iPhone makes the usual sounds as though it will open, but
then I am brought back to my OCR folder where I have other related apps in.
Has anyone else experience this after the last update. If not, can someone
give me suggestions to remedy it other than removing it and reinstalling it?

Thanks in advance.

Hi all. Just a follow up to my post from yesterday. At first I was going
to post a guide to AppleVis, but then saw that there was already a guide
on it. The link is:

http://www.applevis.com/guides/audiogalaxy-web-site-and-desktop-helper-jaws-11-and-window-eyes-perspective

So, rather than re-invent the wheel, I edited my email and posted the
steps to adding and removing folders using Window-Eyes as a comment to
this guide. The link is:

Hi all. I just want to share my experiences with this app. If you have
heard of iTunes Match or Google Music, they are services where you can
listen to your music from your iPhone or iPod anywhere you have online
access. I won't get into all the details of iTunes Match or Google
Music, but I will tell you about Audio Galaxy. First off, it's free.
Second, it doesn't have a 25,000 song limit like iTunes Match does.
Third, if your audio is comprised of many different formats such as mp3,
wma, ogg, wav, ETC, it's all playable with Audio Galaxy because it
re-encodes your music when it streams it to your device.

First the iTunes link to download the app.
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/audiogalaxy-mobile/id373357030?mt=8

Next the Audio Galaxy web site.
http://www.audiogalaxy.com

You have to sign up with Audio Galaxy and create an account. You can
make a stand alone account or you can link your Facebook account with it
and that creates your account. Once you do that, from your mac or
windows pc, you download the Audio Galaxy helper. This is a small
program which runs all the time from your machine. This means that your
computer must be online and logged in so that you can stream your audio
from anywhere. Once the helper is downloaded and installed it will by
default add the user account music folder to the list so that everything
you have there is available. If you want to add additional folders, you
need to right-click the helper from the system tray, and choose the
manage folders link. This opens a list of all your folders in the
standard Windows open dialog. Sorry Mac users, I don't know how to do
this from the Mac. Unfortunately for windows users, arrowing through the
folders doesn't give you keyboard access on checking and unchecking the
folders you want to select. However, at least with Window-Eyes users, if
you know how to use the mouse pointer, you can do this. If you are using
another screen reader, I don't know how to tell you the following.
Reading the steps for Window-Eyes users might help you do the equivalent
in your preferred screen reader though.

Assuming you are using the default layout of Window-Eyes, when the
folder selection dialog opens, use your regular arrows to navigate this
tree. Window-Eyes will tell you if the folder is checked, unchecked, or
partially checked. If it is partially checked, it means you can right
arrow the folder to see subfolders and one or more of those is checked.
Now to check or uncheck a folder to be excluded or included in Audio
Galaxy's folder list, do the following.

1. Arrow to the folder you want to add or remove.

2. Route the mouse pointer to the focus by pressing Insert-Numpad-Plus.

3. Press Numpad-5 to read the current line under the mouse to make sure
it reads out the folder you want to add or remove.

4. If it doesn't, use Numpad-8 or Numpad-2 to move the mouse up or down
a line at a time so you can reach the folder you want.

5. Once the mouse pointer is on the folder you want, press Numpad-4 or
Numpad-6 to move left or right by characters until you reach the first
character of the folder name. For example if the folder I want to add is
called "Music Hits 2012" I would place the mouse pointer on the M of
Music.

6. Here's the slightly tricky part. You have to move the mouse pointer
to the left a little to place it on the check box to toggle whether this
folder is included or not. If it's unchecked, it will be checked and
vice versa. To do this, press Control-Shift-Numpad-4 a total of 5 times.
This might vary depending on your screen resolution, but 5 times seems
to be enough in the situations I've tried..

7. Once the mouse pointer is on

Hello,

If you are not using a passcode, pressing the home button will do the same as
pressing the lock button. If the phone is in your pocket, other things in your
pocket can press the home or lock button. Now, if there is moisture in your
pocket and it touches the screen, if it is the correct amount to permit enough
charge flow that it simulates a touch, you have just activated part of the
display. Now, if there are two points of moisture, you may activate a split tap
on the unlock button and you are in your home screen or the last app. this very
thing happened to a friend and it took us a while to figure out what was going

Re: The Possessed iPhone

2012-04-26 Thread James Mannion
Do you have a bluetooth keyboard active at all? I can tell you that if
you have a bluetooth keyboard paired and if you press something on the
keyboard to wake it up then it will bypass the lock screen and do what
you are describing. Maybe make sure bluetooth is off. I hope it is not
that sms bug virus thing that is possibly out there where a phone can
be compromised and controled by the person that did it. It sounds like
for whatever the reason that some process is activating at times you
are not aware of the reason for. Maybe make sure your app switcher is
cleared out? Put it in airplane mode and test for a period if it stops
happening when in airplane mode? If it does then it is being initiated
by a network connection or something communicating by one of the
radios such as bluetooth.

Re: Displays with the iPad

2012-04-26 Thread Esther
Hi Shaun,

This answer depends on the generation of iPad that you have. By default, the
first generation iPad does not support mirroring of the display. That means
that what is shown on the screen of the device will not generally be projected
to a connected display, unless the app is specifically written to mirror. So,
on a first generation iPad, you'd have to know which apps were written to
support this if you want to go beyond displaying photos, movies, YouTube
videos, and Keynote presentations. In addition, the iPad 1 processor might not
be be up to keeping up with the mirroring in real time if this is video content.

If you have a second or third generation iPad, or supposedly also an iPhone 4S,
then mirroring should be supported by default when you use one of the dock
connectors that connect the device to either a VGA or HDMI output. (These are
named the Apple Digital AV Adapter or VGA adapter, and cost about $39.00 and
$29.00 respectively). You should read the support document:
• iOS: About Apple AV Adapter Compatibility
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4108

The standard projector that most schools use for presentation is likely to be
VGA. Also, do not expect that any app will display exactly as you expect.
Saying that mirroring is supported by default is like saying that accessibility
with VoiceOver is supported by default in iOS. (Well, it's not that bad). It
doesn't mean that the app can't be written or badly coded in such a way that
mirroring is not fouled up; it just means that it's likely to work if the dev
is using standard coding practices. They can choose to block this.

Also, some applications are written with AirPlay support, so they can be
projected or played on a computer screen which supports AirPlay. That's
mostlly for video media apps, though.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Displays with the iPad

2012-04-26 Thread Sharon Ballantyne
Hi there,

I am a totally blind teacher who uses an iPad in my elementary school classroom.
I switch between having the projection system connected to my laptop and the
iPad all the time.

You need an adapter to connect the iPad tot he projection. I am sorry i bought
the adapter six months or so ago and do not remember what it is called. It is
super easy to use though. I also plug the iPad into a set of small computer
speakers so I ahve full sound.
We use small group and large group activities. My students use lots of apps
that are not even fully accessible to me but their eyes work, it is mine that
do not, so it is all fine.

My students ahve also been doing searches for youtube videos for short
presentations, for example, we are currently studying the environment and care
of the earth. We project these videos from either the iPad or computer
depending on which device we used to search.

All the best with your presentations.

The app is free, but you have to pay for a subscription to either listen or
watch the games. Gameday Audio is $14.95 and I can't recall what MLB TV
costs. Probably something around $80.00, but that's just a guess. There are
month to month options as well.

Apple do a doc to hdmi adaptor which should do what you want. If the

Relabeling App Names (was Re: TV Premium English Experience)

2012-04-26 Thread Esther
Hi Sieghard,

Under iOS 5 you can use the VoiceOver relabeling feature to distinguish between
TV English and TV German. Flick to the app on your screen and do a two finger
double tap and hold. After the three tones, you'll be focused on the dialog
menu for labeling in the text field for relabeling the app. If I do a two
finger flick up to "Read All", I'll hear VoiceOver say, "Label Element; text
field, is editing, TV; Cancel button; Save button". Just rename "TV" to "TV
English" or you can leave this app's name as "TV", and make the second app's
label "TV German". This is handy if you have Navigon for the US or North
America and also for Europe, for example, since both apps would be announced as
"Navigon".

And Frank, not all of the UK channels still work.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Hi Scott.

I apologize for the delay in responding to you.

No, the keyboard doesn't fold.

It's a mini keyboard about the size and thickness of the iPhone.

We've had customers tell us that they use their thumbs, while others do not.

I think that one depends on how a person prefers to type on a smaller
keyboard like this one.

The two position power switch is for turning the keyboard on to use it, or
off when not in use to conserve battery.

The other advantage of course, is that being able to turn it off, will mean
that you can throw it in your backpack or whatever, and you're not going to
be accidentally pushing keys. People seem to like the off switch because
they can tell if it's truly turned off as opposed to something like the
Apple Bluetooth keyboard, which is an awesome keyboard, but you turn that
off by holding in the button and hoping it works. :-)

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Take care.

Amy,

THe one thing I was not clear about is if the keyboard is one of those
little things you have to use your thumbs to type on or if it is a more or
less regular keyboard you can use all fingers to type on. ALso the
information indicated the keyboard had a two position power switch and I was
curious what that is about. I was considering this keyboard, but these
questions came to mind. Also, if it folds is that the size referenced in the
description? THe keyboard is about the size and thickness of the phone when
folded?

THanks,

No, I do not believe so. It is not to be an addendum. It is a new book

However, just at the weekend, a friend of mine told me of an app called:
Tvcatchup which, again, is live. I listened to a prog on Saturday which never
broke up. It has fifty channels, mostly the British ones, many of which I
recognised from the Freeview. It certainly works well on Wifi although I did
notice it drop out somewhat this evening on Channel 5.

RE: Capital one app

2012-04-26 Thread M. Taylor
Thank you for the excellent tip, Victor.

It's still not as convenient as having VoiceOver work right out of the box
but, disabling VO, then touching the Credit Card icon, then turning VO back

Such a workaround would never have occurred to me.

I am low vision; consequently, I have just enough vision to locate the
Credit Card icon on my 4 S; I wonder how this would work for a totally blind
person.

Yes, the most recent update broke the accessibility on the first screen
only, once you get past the first screen the app is accessible again.
Here is a tip, if you want to check your credit card account, turn voice
over off, then touch the left side of the screen, make sure its at the same
level as the volume down button, then turn voice over on.
You can not down grade to the previous version, the app forces you to update
it.

Re: Another Find? for Folding BT Keyboard

2012-04-26 Thread Esther
Hi Eileen,

The folding BT keyboard you describe and link to sounds like the Wireless
Matias Folding Keyboard for Mac & PC:
http://matias.ca/foldingkeyboard/pc-mac/

This seems to match the feature descriptions and price, and this model was
discussed on list about a year and a half ago. I'll just point out that for
many users, the description "folding BT keyboard" is meant to convey
portability in a smaller form factor. At least, I think that's what Scott is
looking for -- something that works along the lines of the Think Outside
Stowaway keyboards, is light weight, can fold down to about the size of a pack
of cards (or slightly larger), yet open up to a keyboard that you can
comfortably touch-type with. Folding keyboard designs like the Matias model do
not save much over the length of the Apple Wireless Keyboard in portability.
However, a lot of users like the key action and layout of the Matias Folding
Keyboard, so if the size is not a factor, and you're going to be using the
keyboard on a flat surface, this could be a good choice; Matias makes quality
products.

Most other folding keyboards, such as the Freedom Pro and the Verbatim 97537
Wireless Bluetooth Mobile Folding Keyboard keyboard that Scott tried recently,
make compromises in the layout of the keys to match the fold, and the overall
size/shape boundaries. With the larger folded sizes, you may not find this an
issue. As the folding keyboards get smaller, like the Freedom i-Connex
Bluetooth Folding keyboard, the key placement becomes more of an issue. Start
reading reviewer comments carefully about the inability to hit the shift, space
bar, or return keys accurately.

I haven't seen a design to match the original Stowaway folding keyboards, where
the key driver was placing the keys where users could type at speed. Too bad,
this line was discontinued (2008), and the design rights sold off to a Japanese
company (that uses this for USB keyboards -- not Bluetooth).

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Fw: Can anyone recommend a blue tooth or usb folding keyboard for an iPhone 4S

Hi Scott.

I apologize for the delay in responding to you.

No, the keyboard doesn't fold.

It's a mini keyboard about the size and thickness of the iPhone.

We've had customers tell us that they use their thumbs, while others do not.

I think that one depends on how a person prefers to type on a smaller keyboard
like this one.

The two position power switch is for turning the keyboard on to use it, or off
when not in use to conserve battery.

The other advantage of course, is that being able to turn it off, will mean
that you can throw it in your backpack or whatever, and you're not going to be
accidentally pushing keys. People seem to like the off switch because they can
tell if it's truly turned off as opposed to something like the Apple Bluetooth
keyboard, which is an awesome keyboard, but you turn that off by holding in the
button and hoping it works. J

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Take care.

Amy,

THe one thing I was not clear about is if the keyboard is one of those little
things you have to use your thumbs to type on or if it is a more or less
regular keyboard you can use all fingers to type on. ALso the information
indicated the keyboard had a two position power switch and I was curious what
that is about. I was considering this keyboard, but these questions came to
mind. Also, if it folds is that the size referenced in the description? THe
keyboard is about the size and thickness of the phone when folded?

THanks,

Keyboard for iPhone

2012-04-26 Thread VaShaun Jones
External Brain,

I use a Apple Wireless keyboard that I share between my iOS devices and I
wondered if someone has found a fully functional bluetooth keyboard that is
Voice-Over compatible, sleek and durable that is not too big and not the size
of the phone itself. If so please let me know your experiences either on or off
list. I don't need the number pad and I don't want to have to do finger tricks
for VO to work properly.

Re: accessible weight watchers points app

As Paul said, the weight watchers mobile app is pretty accessible. when I was
on their program it was way more useable then their web site. I just had to
add up the points in my head rather then have them displayed on the screen, but
the numbers of each thing are there to see, just not the totals like they are
for the sighted people. Hope that makes sense.

Another Find? for Folding BT Keyboard

2012-04-26 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello Folks,

I found another folding BT keyboard that some may be interested in. I
contacted the company and talked to the tech department for further
clarification. This keyboard includes a NumPad on it. There are two control,
option, and command keys (one on each side). The downside to the keyboard is
that once it is open, there is no way to lock it in place and would need to
be used on a hard flat surface. Hence, when out-and-about and using it on my
lap, it may fold on me. I suggested that they think about placing a lock to
lock the keyboard in the open position. The fold on the keyboard runs down
between the 9-0, O-P, l-;, and period-slash. This is not cheap. Rounding the
price up, it is $95. I will paste the information that I copied off the
site. Hope this helps for those who are looking for a folding keyboards.

Thanks for the info but I don't succeed to get to the book

I purchased your previous books, so I do have a username and

Weightwatchers has an app which is pretty much accessible. There are some parts
which are not such as showing your points during the day; but the app is pretty
accessible for entering foods, etc.

As promised!!!

2012-04-26 Thread fred olver
It's here: Our iPhone guide for iOS5!

The update you've been waiting for...

Getting Started with the iPhone and iOS5 for Blind
Users
by Anna Dresner with Dean Martineau
In braille (3 volumes), eBraille, Word, ePUB, and DAISY
formats, $22

The iPhone keeps getting better!

This second edition contains new information since the
release of iOS5 in October 2011, including the remarkable voice assistant Siri.
Getting Started with the iPhone walks you through exploring and learning to use
your iPhone in detail. You will learn how to set up your phone, load and back
up music, contacts, etc., use the built-in apps and buy more! It includes an
extensive reference sheet and the appendices include all the gestures used to
operate the phone, as well as troubleshooting tips and a list of resources to
help you learn more.

Most of the book is also relevant for iPod Touch users.
iPad screen layouts, on the other hand, are different enough that many of the
details described will not apply, but information about configuring the iPhone
and using the gestures will still be helpful. Look for our new book on the iPad
this summer.

MathML, LaText, and/or SVG

2012-04-26 Thread Kevin Chao
For those of us who are using iOS devices and studying, researching.
and/or working in the technical-related fields, e.g. science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Are there any iOS
apps, which allow one to either create, edit/manipulate, and/or view
math/science formulae and/or graphics.

MathML, LaText, and/or SVG can be embedded in DAISY3, EPUB3, and/or
HTML5; it can be done in an accessibel manner, but I have been unable
to find any iOS apps that allow creating, editing/manipulating, and/or
viewing STEM content.

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Thanks,

Kevin

Hi Scott.

I apologize for the delay in responding to you.

No, the keyboard doesn’t fold.

It’s a mini keyboard about the size and thickness of the iPhone.

We’ve had customers tell us that they use their thumbs, while others do not.

I think that one depends on how a person prefers to type on a smaller
keyboard like this one.

The two position power switch is for turning the keyboard on to use it,

Hi,

After you press the home button twice, you then double tap and hold the app.
You should hear editing apps. At that point, any app you double tap will be

Hi Scott.

I apologize for the delay in responding to you.

No, the keyboard doesn’t fold.

It’s a mini keyboard about the size and thickness of the iPhone.

We’ve had customers tell us that they use their thumbs, while others do not.

I think that one depends on how a person prefers to type on a smaller keyboard
like this one.

The two position power switch is for turning the keyboard on to use it, or off
when not in use to conserve battery.

The other advantage of course, is that being able to turn it off, will mean
that you can throw it in your backpack or whatever, and you’re not going to be
accidentally pushing keys. People seem to like the off switch because they can
tell if it’s truly turned off as opposed to something like the Apple Bluetooth
keyboard, which is an awesome keyboard, but you turn that off by holding in the
button and hoping it works. J

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Take care.

Re: Capital one app

2012-04-26 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, an alternative to using the Capital One app is using the Pageonce
app. This app can sign into your various accounts, bank, credit cards,
utilities, cell phone, ETC, and report on usage, balance, bill due date,
ETC.

I was using the capital one app for banking. Yesterday i tried to use it
and no luck. Sighted people still see what is on the screen but when i
try to move around on the screen i get a beeping noise. Anyone else
having luck or problems with this app? Any input or suggestions are
appreciated

Re: Can anyone recommend a blue tooth or usb folding keyboard for an iPhone 4S

2012-04-26 Thread Scott Howell
Hi AMy,

No problem and sorry for the silly question about the power switch. I realize
when I asked the question what my mind got stuck on was that the switch had
actually two on positions. :) Now why I had gotten that idea in my mind I have
no clue, but obviously on and off are two positions. Although it sounds like a
nice keyboard, i probably would find typing really tricky since I really need
pretty much standard keys. :) I actually tried one of the folding Verbatim
keyboards and found it to be a little to large when folded, but worse the
number keys were entirely to small and not where they belong. :)
Thanks for the reply.

Re: Streaming all your music to your iPhone or iPod using Audio Galaxy

2012-04-26 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi all. Just a follow up to my post from yesterday. At first I was going
to post a guide to AppleVis, but then saw that there was already a guide
on it. The link is:

http://www.applevis.com/guides/audiogalaxy-web-site-and-desktop-helper-jaws-11-and-window-eyes-perspective

So, rather than re-invent the wheel, I edited my email and posted the
steps to adding and removing folders using Window-Eyes as a comment to
this guide. The link is:

http://www.applevis.com/guides/audiogalaxy-web-site-and-desktop-helper-jaws-11-and-window-eyes-perspective#comment-2967

So, there you have it.

Happy listening.

For example if the folder I want to add is
called "Music Hits 2012" I would place the mouse pointer on the M of Music.

7. Once the mouse pointer is on the check box, press the left-click
button, Numpad-slash to toggle the check box. The slash key is located
directly above the Numpad-8.

If there are other folders visible on the screen which you want to
toggle to checked or unchecked, you can repeat steps 4 through 8 as
needed. However if the folder you want to work with next isn't visible
on the screen, you will have to navigate to it starting with step 1.

Once you have your folders set, you don't really have to mess with th

Re: Interview on KPFK

2012-04-26 Thread Esther
Hi Austin,

Just to let you know, there's something wrong with the version of the latest
show on the KPFK podcast feed. When both your links cut off after a few
seconds, I tracked down the main Access Unlimited program feed at:
http://archive.kpfk.org/parchive/xml/au.xml
which should resolve to:
feed://archive.kpfk.org/parchive/xml/au.xml
Every other episode but the most recent one plays correctly, and shows a file
download size of 13.1 MB. The program you linked to, for Thursday, April 26,
2012, has a download size of 16.0 kB -- nearly a thousand times smaller -- and
cuts off after a few seconds.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
