RE: problems activating my apple id

2012-10-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Donald,

Often when you have a picker item like choosing the country in your case you
double tap on the control. It appears like nothing is changing as you said,
but in fact you may find a list of countries elsewhere on the screen,
usually below the picker item. I suggest you give it another try and after
you double tap, just flick right or explore the screen and see if something
popped up where you can select your country and by doing so make the "Next"
button active.

Sieghard

Subject: problems activating my apple id

Hello,

I got my IPhone 5 on monday. The first thing I need to do is to
download and install the vz contacts transfer app, but when I go into
the apps store, and tell it to install, I am prompted for my apple id
and password (finally got those entered correctly), now I have to
review my account settings, but I can't get beyond the select store
page.

I see a store picker button, but when I double-tap it the screen
doesn't seem to change and I can't select the store I need (United
states). and because I can't select the store, the next button is
disabled.

I tried this on itunes on my pc and had similar problems.

Any tips on how to get this done would be appreciated.

I got a response from APple and the issue has been referred to Engineering.
There is speculation as to the issue, but if you can, update APple about your
experience with FaceTime as well. This may provide another area for them to
investigate.

Thanks

I use this rss reader daily. It is synced to my google reader

It's also great, because I tell it I want to read the full text

Re: game sounds and voice over?

2012-10-18 Thread ShamelessFanGirl
Hey Scott,

Consider it done. The FaceTime issue was actually the first thing I noticed
cutting out, and I've been in dialogues with support both via email, and the
phone since. Noticed it the morning after IOS6's release; the audio cutting out
in games/other apps which use audio was noticed later. Curiously, I don't
notice it happening in as pronounced a manner via Skype, during the playing of
music, or with things like ringtones/system sounds and VO, so it's an odd issue
for sure.

Thanks for adding your voice to this, and take care,

based on that, it isn't a problem with the games/audio-using applications

Evening list members, just discovered a very interesting little app called
around me. This app is great for simply exploring your surroundings, it
seems to be very accessible with voice over. thus, far I would probably give
it a 4.5 out of 5 in the accessibility score. I do not know if this works
outside the United states and Canada, but my first guess is that it probably
will work in Europe.
It will be the first selection when doing a search in the app store. The
app is free if you want to block the advertising the price is $2.99 best of

question about OCR on iPhone 5

2012-10-18 Thread Alex Wallis

Hi list,
I am planning to get the iPhone 5, as I have had the chance of a very
good deal on the phone.

I am just wondering, has anyone tried any of the OCR apps on the 5?
in particular I am interested in text detective, but observations on the
performance of other apps would be interesting to know about as well.

I am interested in if results are better, worse or the same as on the 4s,
I mention text detective as like so many of you, text detective is the
only app I have got any useful results from.

I wonder if the camera on the 5 makes any noticeable difference.
Many thanks for any information,
Alex.

RE: question about OCR on iPhone 5

2012-10-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Alex,

I have an iPhone 4S, but I can tell you that I doubt there will be any
change in how accurate OCR will be. The camera of the iPhone 5 is the same
as in the 4S except that they put a slightly better lens cover over it and
did a few things on the software end which make it a bit better. Low light
performance is also improved, but the actual camera is still the same 8
Megapixel as is in the 4S so unless you are taking pictures in poor
lighting, I doubt you find any difference.

How well Text Detective or Prizmo will work probably depends a lot more on
how well you are able to take the picture, i.e. how still you hold the
camera, how far from the page, how good is the lighting etc.

Regards,
Sieghard

RE: question about OCR on iPhone 5

2012-10-18 Thread Richard Turner
Alex,
I don't have the iPhone 5 yet, but on the 4S I can only get small portions
of text with Text Detective. Prizmo is the only OCR app I can get reliable
results with. I've continued to try, DocScanner, SayText, Text Grabber,
Text4u (not sure on the spelling of that one) and Prizmo and Prizmo works
best for me.
You comments mirror that of the reviewer from Access World who put Text
Detective at the top of the list.
I'm wondering if you wouldn't mind sending pretty detailed steps of how to
get good results with Text Detective to the list?
I am pretty sure I'm not the only one who wouldn't mind this being
revisited.

Thanks,
Richard

2012-10-18 Thread Thom
Hi Alex,
I have a 4S, and the camera is the same is on the 5,
as far as megapixels. I've come to like Say Text. The way I use it is to
place the paper in front of me. I put the camera in the very center of the
paper, lift straight up with two hands. There is an auto take feature that
will prompt you when to stop moving. Hold still, and it will do the rest.

HTH,

Thom

Subject: question about OCR on iPhone 5

Hi list,
I am planning to get the iPhone 5, as I have had the chance of a very
good deal on the phone.

I am just wondering, has anyone tried any of the OCR apps on the 5? in
particular I am interested in text detective, but observations on the
performance of other apps would be interesting to know about as well.

I am interested in if results are better, worse or the same as on the 4s, I
mention text detective as like so many of you, text detective is the
only app I have got any useful results from.
I wonder if the camera on the 5 makes any noticeable difference. Many thanks
for any information, Alex.

Re: question about OCR on iPhone 5

2012-10-18 Thread David Chittenden
Yes, OCR depends on how clear the image is. I regularly have excellent success
with both Text Detective and Prizmo. I find that Prizmo has more accurate OCR
when a clear image is taken, but Text Detective is easier to get an image
initially. Compared with my iPhone 4, both apps work better on my iPhone 5.

Re: question about OCR on iPhone 5

2012-10-18 Thread David Chittenden
I find, with Text Detective, if I place my elbows on either side of the paper
and have my arms go straight up, I hold my iPhone in landscape orientation at
the top. This gives me a good image. I have fairly long arms.

With Prizmo, I start with the iPhone flat on the page and raise up slowly until
I hear VO say auto-focus. Sometimes, I raise until the second time auto-focus
is announced.

RE: question about OCR on iPhone 5

2012-10-18 Thread Richard Turner
Are we talking about an i.5 by 11 sheet and you are getting the entire page?
I've never gotten more than a half a page and that seldom.
I don't have particularly long arms, but I will try that approach.
I'm guessing you are about 16 to 18 inches above the page?
Holding the phone landscape, is it over the center of the page or toward top
or bottom?

Re: question about OCR on iPhone 5

2012-10-18 Thread David Chittenden
Well, here in NZ, pages are usually a4 which is 9 x 12, I think. I go slightly
toward the top of the page. If necessary, I do another scan in the lower 3rd,
but if that's the case, I usually run Prizmo. I find Prizmo has better OCR.
Text Detective gives me the general overview quicker.

re: question about OCR on iPhone 5

2012-10-18 Thread Alex Wallis

Hi list,
well, I have never got any useful results with prismo.
The reason I go for text detective is because of course it repeatedly
scans til it finds text.
Prismo is just so fiddly to use, and its extremely frustrating to snap a
photo with it, then find out its unusable, and then to have to tap
several buttons just to take another photo,
If prismo had some sort of repeat scan feature til text is found like
text detective, I might be more inclined to keep trying it.
Also, of course in prismo several buttons aren't labeled, and over all I
just find prismo clunky and unfriendly to use, unlike text detective.
The one thing I wish they would add in for the next version is a start
scan button to the results screen, as at the moment if you get rubbish
for your results you have to find the button to go back, then find the
start scan button to have another go.
I think it is all about how the paper is positioned, and where the phone
is in relation to it, I just keep raising and lowering the phone til I
get something useful from it.

I have seen the post here and on apple vis about this display. The individual
didn't like the recessed display and location of space keys. I'm intrigued by
the idea of so much power for so relatively little money, i.e. this has extra
features that I think I would find really useful. I'd love to hear others'
experiences with this device with or without an IOS device paired to it.
Obviously comments that don't relate to the IOS device would best be sent off
list. Thanks in advance.

interesting apple pattent

2012-10-18 Thread paras shah
Please read below.
Verry cool.

An Apple patent application discovered on Thursday outlines an
invention that uses metadata from emails, texts and other
communications to determine how a synthesized voice sounds in a
text-to-speech (TTS) system.

Source: USPTO
The filing, titled "Voice assignment for text-to-speech output," looks
to create "speaker profiles" which can change the voice
characteristics of TTS output to match parsed-out metadata like age,
sex, dialect and other variables.

As noted by the application, many systems exist today to aid the
visually impaired, including the system on Apple's iPhone, however
most TTS engines "generate synthesized speech having voice
characteristics of either a male speaker or a female speaker.
Regardless of the gender of the speaker, the same voice is used for
all text-to-speech conversion regardless of the source of the text
being converted." Apple's invention proposes a different solution.

Instead of hearing the same voice for every message, the invention
obtains metadata "directly from the communication or from a secondary
source identified by the directly obtained metadata" to create the
most suitable speaker profile.

According to the patent filing, "Providing a speech output that is
associated with a speaker profile allows speaker recognition while
providing a more enjoyable and entertaining experience for the
listener."

An example is provided in which a user receives a message from
"Charles Prince," who has an email address of charles.pri...@isp.uk,
regarding a party for "Albert." In this case, the system could use the
".uk" address as primary metadata. Secondary metadata can be gathered
if a contact card is attached to the message, or if Charles Prince's
information is already in the user's address book.

Metadata samples.
The data from the text and the corresponding metadata are then fed
into a TTS engine, which assigns a speaker profile to convert the text
into speech.

After converting each word and phonetic transcription in the text to
distinct sounds that comprise a given language, the TTS engine then
divides and marks rhythmic sounds like phrases, clauses and sentences.

In some implementations, speech can be created by piecing together
pre-recorded voice fragments, including sounds, entire words or even
sentences, that are stored on a mobile device or in an off-site
database.

In other implementations, the TTS engine can include a synthesizer
that "incorporates a model of the human vocal tract or other human
voice characteristics to create a synthetic speech output according to
the speaker profile."

One of the most interesting iterations notes that "a speaker's voice
can be recorded and analyzed to generate voice data."

 From the patent filing's description:

For example, the speaker's voice can be recorded by a recording
application running on the device or during a telephone call (with
permission). The voice characteristics of the speaker can be obtained
using known voice recognition techniques. In this implementation, a
speaker profile may not be necessary as the speaker's name can be
directly associated with voice data stored in voice database.

As for output, the system may pick the ".uk" email address to use as
primary metadata, taking contact card information like a birthday to
determine sex and age, to subsequently output a speaker profile
matching an older male with a British accent. Charles Prince's
physical address, phone number, or picture can also be used to
determine a speaker profile. The more metadata available, the more
refined the output.

Flowchart of TTS system.
It is unclear if Apple plans to deploy such a system, however the
company currently has a similar, albeit less advanced, system in place
with Siri. While the feature is limited to certain regions, Siri has
an option to choose dialects like "English (United States)" or
"English (United Kingdom)" to recognize incoming voice commands, as
well as provide responses in the selected accent.

I wonder if the camera on the 5 makes any noticeable difference.

Re: voice brief Re: Facebook Apps and status report.

Hi Donna,
When Voice Brief starts playing, stop it and then put your finger
just above the home button and slide it up a little. You will then
see a button which has DN and the word Arrow. That's the settings

iTunes Match how-to's.

2012-10-18 Thread ShamelessFanGirl
Good evening Mac/Apple people,

I recently subscribed to this service, and while I have a couple nuts and bolts
questions, am curious as to how those of you who have also taken the plonge are
finding it. My question is strictly this: Having had all my music matched, and
uploaded, can I then delete the locally stored tracks from iTunes so as to free
up that 136 or thereabouts GB of drivespace, or do I have to leave it as is? I
had a long commute yesterday, and used IM the majority of the way there, and
yep, I'm definitely in bliss. VZW/LTE and iTunes Match; a fantastic marriage
IMO.

Thanks for any/all input everyone, and if this becomes too cluttered, feel free
to write me off-list. No, this service is by no means new, but it is to me, so
again, thanks for putting up with my ramble/question.

Have fun, and take care.

RE: iTunes Match how-to's.

2012-10-18 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Yes, you can delete all the tracks that have been matched, and iTunes will
stream them from the cloud. You can actually set up a smart playlist that
shows you all matched songs so you can then select all and delete.

Subject: iTunes Match how-to's.

Good evening Mac/Apple people,

I recently subscribed to this service, and while I have a couple nuts and
bolts questions, am curious as to how those of you who have also taken the
plonge are finding it. My question is strictly this: Having had all my music
matched, and uploaded, can I then delete the locally stored tracks from
iTunes so as to free up that 136 or thereabouts GB of drivespace, or do I
have to leave it as is? I had a long commute yesterday, and used IM the
majority of the way there, and yep, I'm definitely in bliss. VZW/LTE and
iTunes Match; a fantastic marriage IMO.

Thanks for any/all input everyone, and if this becomes too cluttered, feel
free to write me off-list. No, this service is by no means new, but it is to
me, so again, thanks for putting up with my ramble/question.

Have fun, and take care.

Apple looking to add character to text-to-speech voices

Interesting article. I've kind of wondered what a text to speech voice would
sound like as if it was from Alabama or Boston. :)

It is a very good app. What I like about it is when you find what you are
looking for, you tap on details and you can use whatever navigation app to
get there.

Evening list members, just discovered a very interesting little app called
around me. This app is great for simply exploring your surroundings, it
seems to be very accessible with voice over. thus, far I would probably
give

it a 4.5 out of 5 in the accessibility score. I do not know if this works
outside the United states and Canada, but my first guess is that it
probably

will work in Europe.
It will be the first selection when doing a search in the app store. The
app is free if you want to block the advertising the price is $2.99 best
of

wishes.

Re: Around Me

2012-10-18 Thread Tom Lange

Hi,
I use Yelp and AroundMe fairly often, and foursquare's cool too.

Going off on a tangent for a second, a lot of times when I'm out and about
or visiting at friends' places I like to look for various restaurants and
such, so it would be good if I could find a reliable app for obtaining
restaurant menus. Unfortunately the MenuPages app is kind of a pain to use.

Yes they are similar. Yelp is interfaced with Siri and currently has a few
more features. Unfortunately, Yelp doesn't work all over the world. Yelp
currently works in the US and Canada. Around Me and Where To both work all
over.

Hi,

Last summer I used AroundMe to book a hotel reservation while we were
driving, and it worked beautifully. We got one of the last rooms in town,
as

it turned out. So yes, it's a wonderful app.

Best,

2012-10-18 Thread Rob Harris
Well, all screen readers are doing TTS, and the free windows one, NVDA, has
various regional variations of English, not just us, Uk or Australia; but
within the UK, there is Irish, Scottish, Brummy which is very west midland;
and Lancashire; and they sound different for sure; amusing, but not
adopted any of them.
